Why has Microsoft done this to me? Is it the update that made it this way?

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I have an issue that has finally put me to the edge of giving up, I hope
you can help me please.

Okay, I use Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX) just
about everyday. I have been enjoying it until the point where
Microsoft decided to update my computer on April 30, 2018. The
update left me with a barrage of issues with my graphics in which the
exact settings I have never changed.

I updated all my drivers when the 2018 Update "upgraded" my
system's settings (like usual after a Creator's Update from MS).

Now, I started up FSX afterwards and well... let's just say FSX is
unstable and impossible to use. The issues with frames
STUTTERING every 2 seconds or so, FPS DROPS and TERRIBLE
ANTI-ALIASING became the way FSX was now made to do
. Never
had this issue before. It seems like my Intel Graphics are
overpowering my nVidia Graphics, even though my 630M is selected
as the operating graphics for it.

Why has Microsoft done this to me? Is it the update that made it this
way?

Thanks,

Braden Bogdan

I am having very similar issues Braden. The update made many changes without me knowing, and ever since I have been having very strange issues with FSX-SE. The problems are not identical to you except the fact that what was before a smooth, stable setup is now a disaster with multiple problems... I had absolutely no problems with Windows 10 previously - both with FS9 and FSX-SE...

Every system is different as well as the installation of FSX and FSX addons.  There is a solution to your problem(s) (other than Charlie's), and I use it every time I have an issue with FSX.  I disable the dll.xml and fsx.cfg by renaming them dll.xml.off and fsx.cfg.off.  I restart the sim and see if this fixes the problem.  The fsx.cfg will be rebuilt but not the dll.xml.  It will be just disabled.  The dll.xml loads modules that addon developers have installed.  One module known to cause stutters if not up-to-date is the FSUIPC utility.  So, if the stutters stop after disabling the dll.xml, then go into the dll.xml and disable the fsuipc module.  The AVSIM CTD Guide, page 14 tells you how.  The guide also tells you how to disable the dll.xml and fsx.cfg and how to find them on your drive if you are not familiar with these actions.

LOL - Charlie, I'm not quite ready for that but I'm getting close. If I could, I would use it on the skulls of the arrogant MS programmers who think it's okay to force changes on their "customers" (inmates maybe?) without any notification or requesting permission...

Jim, I will probably try this next. I had a saved copy of my fsx.cfg from a period where everything was in the sweet spot and the sim was running flawlessly, so I had hoped that by using this, it would give me back what I've lost. But I've found numerous corrupted files, so I have a feeling that a full reinstall is going to be my only real solution. (Groan)… I'm trying everything I can to avoid that but... As you say, everyone's system and installation is different and I'm sure the majority of people have had no problem with the update, or the forums would be flooded with complaints. But for me it's been a total disaster

Dovetail has a way to repair default files.  FSX (boxed version), you can try running FSX then SP2 OR Acceleration (whichever configuration you have) and select repair.  It should not mess with any of your configuration files or mess with any add-on files.  I know when I did a repair, it never messed with my configs or add-ons but you might backup your configs first to be sure.

I forgot to mention above that if the anomalies do not end after rebuilding your fsx.cfg and renaming your dll.xml, then you should also rename your scenery.cfg to scenery.cfg.off.  When you do this, the default will be installed which is good as none of your addon scenery will load.  If the stuttering continues, then you know it is not the scenery.cfg and you can bring the one you renamed back as the scenery.cfg and your add-ons are back.  I do know for a fact as it happened to me that the fsuipc will cause stuttering every two seconds if not the latest version.  One does not need the fsuipc utility unless you want to use one of the features.

I mention all of these possible solutions because I have the latest April 2018 Windows Update and see absolutely no issues with FSX (boxed version).  I do not use any tweaks but I do know that tweaks, if not properly employed (with the right figures), will cause stuttering and other anomalies.

You're not alone. The FSX SE freezes, I get a white and/or black screen. Not sure if my PREPARED v4 is done for, but I also have these problems when I'm not on the sim, but while using the internet.

Go to System Properties and create a new restore point, when done go to system restore and choose a restore point before the Update and restore this. You can always restore back if necessary. To make sure my FSX (not steam) works if there is a problem, which I get sometimes with scenery, I create a new system restore point at least once a week , this has always worked for me, hope it does for you.

He can also go to updates and roll back the most recent to the previous.

Right Click on the Windows Start button, left lower corner.
Click Settings
Click Update and Security
Click Windows Update
Click View Installed Update History
Click Uninstall Updates

Then choose what update(s) to uninstall

I needed to do this in Mid-May as the 5/14/18 Feature Set Update rendered my Chrome unusable.

Thanks everyone!

The only issue with rolling back to the previous version of my Windows before the update is..... well, the Windows.old folder is not on my hard drive anymore! Thanks to me and the Disk Cleanup utility! (Lesson learned, lol)

I will try the scenery.cfg and module tests to see if anything is lying around and causing trouble. I also want to say that I run the BUFFERPOOLS-poolsize=0 and himemfix=1 tweaks in my fsx.cfg, which when not there, cause stuttering.

Thanks again for your help everyone, and I will let you know what happens and hope for a solution to this!

You may need to re-apply nvidia CP or Inspector settings, and rebuild your shaders - delete FSX folder under "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft".

I suspect there cuold be more about this update, but it's worth trying, since you said AA is a problem

Hi there, tell us about what kind of addons do you use, also you 've said something about Intel / nVidia combination (?), give us more details about it. Do you use an Antivirus?

Regards.

Thanks as well

I am going to put my fsx.cfg content below, and which the TRUSTED area will show what I have running from the dll.xml. My computer specs as well.

I am not using any 3rd party anti-virus software, just Microsoft Defender.

(HEADS-UP, LONG!)

Thanks

Just one more question, with those settings what was your FPS? A good approach is to move all sliders to minimum and see how it goes. You can also copy your fsx.cfg to a safe location, delete the original and run fsx again. It will be created by fsx. If everything is OK after that, then you have to deal with fsx settings. If not, something is going wrong with Windows. Also put the entire  fsx folder in the excluded list of your antivirus (Windows Defender). While running fsx check the task manager to see if there are any services with high CPU impact.(Run FSX in window mode).

Hi, have you tried anything? The guide I have sent you is very helpful .... I also had the update done and everything was fine. Also check if there is excessive disk activity caused by other services, for some reason, while you run fsx. Also set the windows Power Options to high performance if it is not set already. Regards.

Ah yes I did! In fact I am just taking a needed break from tweaking + testing, tweaking + testing, tweaking + testing.... ya know!

I did find a sweet configuration with nVidia Inspector's 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling, Ansiotropic Filtering@User-Defined/Off, Power@High Performance (or Performance) and putting my FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.18 in my FSX.cfg.

But...... V-SYNC is not working that greatly!

Alot of tearing and texture spiking when looking around my eye-point. I have v-Sync on 1/2 RR, Force On, Triple Buffering and that worked the best with a good FPS. It seems like v-sync is not working to its liking, let alone my liking! lol

I will do some more testing and will see what will become. I am tired right now and will try again this evening. My mind needs to saturate what my testing did so far.... lol

I will lyk, Thx!

So after MANY tries and MANY (much) tweaking with nVidia Inspector and fsx.cfg file changes, I finally found a good setting that is giving me a steady 30 fps and (almost) no stuttering!

Good? Yes!

But..... I have my FFTF at a such a good setting that is giving me blurries. Not to mention terrible v-sync ripping and tearing, but with bp=0 I expected it. Still only trying the A2A C182 on a clear day with these results. I hope to see some good news with the NGX, but I am not sure what to expect!

So yeah, I am still word not allowed at Microsoft for ruining my patience and time, but hope to find a solution soon.

Eyes to the skies!

Have you tried Fast Sync? In theory it's only supposed to work at very high framerates but some people on these forums (me included) have found it very effective with only a small performance hit.

Fast Sync I have tried, but not as much as 1/2 Refresh Rate V-Sync. I have a 60 hz monitor and am thinking that 1/2 RR should give me a good 30 fps without tearing.

I will take your advice however. Do you know what the difference is between the two by chance?? A 1/2 RR VSync would be 30/60 hz, but FAST VSync is something I don't really know about. Yeah.... : )

Thank you for your advice, vortex681. Much appreciated!

The biggest difference between the two is input lag, which is much higher for "vsync 1/2 refresh rate". For a detailed explanation of fast sync, watch this: https://youtu.be/L07t_mY2LEU. As I said in an earlier post (and as the linked video repeatedly states), fast sync shouldn't work at framerates at or below the refresh rate. However, I had quite noticeable tearing with FSX on my 60Hz monitor. After trying all of the alternatives, I tried fast sync (with unlimited frame rates in-game) and the tearing was gone with no noticeable performance hit - my FPS is averages around 40-50.

Another alternative is to try "adaptive vsync 1/2 refresh rate". With a 60Hz monitor, if your FPS are above 30, vsync is active (with some input lag) with no tearing. If you FPS drop below 30, vsync turns off but there could be some tearing (but no input lag).

If I were you, I'd try fast sync first and if it doesn't help, try "adaptive vsync 1/2 refresh rate".

I will try out both, thx!

My monitor is 60 Hz and I run no bufferpools in the fsx.cfg, so I will have tearing issues no matter what. I am used to a here-and-there popping twitch, which was ominent with my pre-Windows 10 1803 setting. But I now have annoying twitching and tearing even with v-sync on in either my fsx.cfg and nVidia Inspector.

Like I said, I am finding a good setting that is giving me steady fps and good graphics, but I am still struggling with v-sync. Life's a word not allowed. Oh well! ; )

More thanks!

Just asking, after the Microsoft update is your VGA card driver also updated? If yes find the old driver. Have you set the settings inside NVI to FSX exe? Delete your fsx.cfg and let FSX create it again... Give it a try, you can copy it first to safe location and then you can bring it back. Usually windows updates lead to CTDs the don't mess with the performance so much.

Regards.
