New MS Flight Sim shown at E3 - Updated Information

I just think it may be a good idea for us all to take a bit of time and get some real facts before we break our back again bending down to this company just because they have a new marketing plan. I truly hope it is great but we shall see.

Hi Sam,

Amen to that! At this stage, for all we are permitted to know we might be faced with a variant of the ‘Microsoft Flight’ debacle. Believe it or not I still have it installed and find myself dipping into the sim occasionally. If this turns out to be the case then, while it’s likely that my curiosity will drive me to purchase the right to experience MS2020, my main sim will remain Prepar3D v4.x (under Windows 7) and/or v5.x (under Windows 10).

Edit: Oh, and before any of you reading this might be tempted to get on your high horse regarding the inadvisability of continuing to use Windows 7, please don’t waste your time; I’ve heard it all before and your well meaning comments will, once again, be landing on deaf ears! The dire prophecies of doom and gloom have failed to materialise over the past couple of years and all remains well in the land of Seven 😀

Regards,

Mike

It would be a shame if XP11, which has attracted a fair amount of former FSX/P3D users, goes back to being a niche player in the FS market because they didn't react quickly and boldly to the announcement of Microsoft.

It would be shame..

But -- you hit the issue earlier in your post..

I couldn't get back into XP after my flirtations with VR.

I'm really hoping this new sim has VR support, but even if not, it's more likely to keep me engaged simply for finally being something all new and that appears to look and perform amazing straight away.  Fingers crossed.

What we do not know, is whether we will still have access to P3DV5, or if Microsoft will use its legal muscle to push LM out of the consumer space, after launching FS2020..

Next we have a developer who only releases models of the real world planes that he buys tears apart, rebuilds and analizes with computer equipment.

That same developer builds flight simulators used by the military for real world training, to exacting standards that boggle the imagination (angles of attack accurate to 1/4 degree!).  He's currently discussing releasing consumer versions of these simulators.  For FSX and P3D.

I don't understand the negativity of many simmers.  While no product will live up to the expectations people build from initial announcements, it will still be better than what we've had before.

We have no way of knowing what third party developers might be involved.  One lesson I'm sure Microsoft learned from Flight is to write an NDA with some real teeth, one that no one will violate.

If the new sim is the best thing since sliced bread, great!  If not I'll keep flying P3Dv4.  I'll be happy either way.

That Sir is the big old Elephant in the room! Thanks for saying it. That has been a worry since they made this announcement about a year and a half before they will be ready to go. It may be to cut off Ver 5 at the pass. I was not real impressed with their love letter on the site only to find out this could be just some sort of side venture with a French gaming company who they can drop a a moments notice and 1 phone call.

Probably not thinking of the same Dev but not important. It is in no way negative to urge caution. Count up the post and you will find about 5 guys leading the cheers and upvoting one another. Now if all there hopes come true then I will be the first to throw my credit card at them. One guy posted he was going to be able to fly over his house and see it!! LOL That may actually be true for a few but not the vast majority of us in the world.

Perhaps their agreement for the ESP code had provisions for just such concerns in the future?

That would seem likely

Me either.

...especially the ones who straight away were saying "I'm done with MS! - They burned me with Flight!" and things along those lines.

Things change.

Businesses change.

One has to be open minded and flexible and ride the waves of change.

There will be the *potential* of being able to fly over your house and see it in the sim, even if it's only a flat photo.  I'll be looking for my own house in any case, just to see if it's there.  I haven't lost anything if it's not.

While some of the more positive comments border on the silly, they do no real harm.  Only the youngest or most naive simmers will expect everything to be the way some people are hoping it will be.

To add on to what Hook said..

Most of what this thread wants, a new generation of gamers may not even be worried about anyhow, so there will probably be a balance.

I remember being a kid and playing early FS and all I wanted to do was take off and climb and then the land again with the Lear...or watch with external cameras as the 747 gear retracted.

Thankfully they made it very easy to do just that, but also grew it into a full blown sim behemoth over time.

Hi Bert,

I can’t recall the details, but I seem to remember reading at some point that LM had achieved exclusive rights and control over what happens to Prepar3D. I certainly hope that is true. Microsoft should, for once, be compelled to compete for our custom on a level playing field.

Hi Larry,

I can do that already in X-Plane courtesy of ORBX True Earth.

Well to be fair, you could do it in any Sim with ortho scenery.

It’s not like OrbX is modeling your house, so it’s either flat photo scenery by itself or with an autogen building on top.  In XP it’s possible there’s 3D building data for some that is ok, but not textured right or anything

Depending upon where one lives and the data quality there, this upcoming sim may be the first chance at truly seeing “ones house”, somewhat accurately, in the Sim.

I use XP11 exclusively now after switching from P3D about 18 months ago.  I really like it and it looks very good.  It is much less "cartoonish" than P3D which always bothered me.  But, too much is still missing from it that we had even back in FSX.

There is a video of Austin trying the new xEnviro 1.10 weather plug in on XP11 and some of his comments about XP11's default clouds and how things work in his own product in general are disconcerting.  He seems, at best, to run the company based on only what he wants and not so much on what the consumer wants like being able to taxi a 172 after a successful flight and to have seasons.

XP11 is markedly better than XP10 which I could not even use and I would not go back to P3D at this point. Nevertheless, if MSFS2020 is anything like what many of us envision and is indeed the next generation of flight sims, I won't hesitate to switch.

It would be a shame if XP11, which has attracted a fair amount of former FSX/P3D users, goes back to being a niche player in the FS market because they didn't react quickly and boldly to the announcement of Microsoft.

As a small organization, perhaps there is only so much that they can do compared to Microsoft and its vast resources.  But, denying reality is not a good way to respond to a major competitive challenge.  If David is going to stand up to Goliath, he must at least recognize the existence of the giant and why people may want to be on the side of giant.

Couldn't agree more wit you Sir.

I'm one of those who changed from P3D to XP. But even before the trailer, I couldn't enjoy XP with those clouds.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I have some big hopes on MFS.

And that obsession of Austin about what He thinks is right, even if the whole customer base is against him... hilarious.
