Installing out of the sim is the way to go period.  The problem is the transition right now.

For example Flightbeam will not install outside the sim yet they do XML method and plus install in root sim directory.

PMDG still installs inside the sim.

LM is probably going to force all to install outside the sim moving forward - that is my theory.  I hope LM forces it

When sim upgrade time comes, it is super easy to update the sim and not worry about reinstalling addons.  Time is money period.

Right now, I can never fully enjoy my sim once an upgrade happens b/c files are everywhere.  I hate files in effects folder.  Some developers install the scenery outside like LatinVFR yet files are being thrown in sim root directory too.  Why even bother with XML installs when the dev put files inside root directory.  During upgrade time, you have now more mess to deal with.

Sim software is designed with engineers and expect users to be engineers - I am very grateful that Orbx is doing this (been bugging them since p3d v3 days).  Eventually others will finally follow their lead.  They are the biggest addon maker in the market (in terms of volume of products).

FSDT and A2A (even defunt RealAir) install all outside the sim which is beyond awesome.

I don't think that is possible.
What about (generic) texture replacements, like clouds, default airport textures etc.
As for now, the original ones have to be overwritten inside the sim.

Then LM have to add an extra xml file for that ( and of coarse modify the exe ) ...

Hello,

it's ORBX.

Products up to and including LOWI for X Plane 11 are for the time being all available using FTX Central.

Products from KBVS Skagit onwards are only available using Orbx Central.

There are no inherent problems with Orbx Central and X Plane 11, so far both products released are for that simulator.

With Orbx Central 4 - Global textures for Orbx Global are all installed outiside the sim.  It is all possible with P3Dv4 SDK

Yes it is possible, and, in fact, highly recommended.

Whatever P3D finds last in the addon lookup chain replaces everything that came before it. And the default assets are always loaded first, so every addon replaces whatever default has been there. It has been this way from the start of the "add-on.xml method". I know that I keep repeating myself every time - but this "method" is not about scenery - it covers every type of simulator asset.

When you link for example a texture replacement - installed anywhere on your computer - to P3D with an add-on.xml, it will substitue the default textures at runtime just fine (see ORBX Buildings, but I am doing the same with REX World Airports too). There is no need to physically overwrite anything anymore, hasn't been for several years. And the best part is - you can turn the replacement on or off with a few mouseclicks on P3D's Addon dialog.

Best regards

Ahh, didn't know that. Nice to hear.
And the replacement order of textures (if more add-ons replace same texture) is defined in the add-on.xml?

The "order" is defined by the sequence that the addon packages appear in the lookup chain, and within them, by the order of the components. In the simplest form, this "order" is determined by the sequence in which you have installed your addons. With autodiscovery, some simmers force this order by renaming the addon-packages.

So if you have two texture replacements, that override the same things, the one that is in the add-on.xml that is loaded last "wins".

Your rule would only apply if you have two texture replacements in the same add-on.xml, but that would be very impractical. Normally you have one add-on.xml for every product.

(this btw. is the reason why you can change the order of the Packages in P4AO, to force a particular sequence on addons. Layers exist only for scenery, but not for the 14 other types of content)

And the sim browses the packages, as show in P4OA, from top to bottom? Meaning files found in the packages on the bottom take priority over those on the top?

It should.

But all this is only really relevant for scenery without layers (or scenery components that have the same layer numbers, like those packages from ORBX used to have).

Or if you have two active Packages with other content that do exactly the same thing - but I don't think that you would have two texture replacements active at the same time for example. That just adds to the loading times.

This is all getting confusing.

I ended up doing a complete re-install of Win 10. Almost done reinstalling all Orbx using OC v3 until the new and improved version releases. And then just leave the sceneries in their original installed location.

A new version of the Vector tool sounds promising. I wonder if they're going to fix the frozen water issue.
