VR Inclusion in MSFS

The poll thread is locked for obvious (VR fanatics) reasons and now folks are creating other threads about the closed "Poll thread"! Seriously?

Don't you want to raise the level a little guys?

This is exhausting

fanatic definition: a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal

I am afraid I was not name-calling

When you pile in at the end of others calling their fellow forum members cultist's and other pejoratives, there is not another way to take it. It would not be tolerated in another subforum, and it's getting old.

I'm pretty sure if i started using phrases like anti-vr zealots, I would be pulled up short rather quickly.

@HiFlyer It is quite ridiculous that my post made you react having in mind what has been said before on this very same thread.

But of course you can express yourself as you want like any of us.

Woke up to the flood of MSFS videos and got as excited as a 4 year old on Christmas morning. Then the bombshell in Froogle's video at 25:08

"We asked them about VR they've said no, VR would not be in there at launch, maybe later on but it's perhaps a longer term goal".

Aaaad there's my hopes dashed against the rocks. Not even "no VR from the start, but it will definitely come with an update".

If there's no VR from the start, I doubt the whole thing will ever be optimised for VR. They'll no doubt be targeting 30-40 fps at 4k rather than the 90fps kind of performance VR requires.

Well there's always flyinside. Even a quick and dirty hack would be better than nothing at all, for me.

A question: As a programmer yourself, how hard would you say adding vr to a program like this would generally be?

I keep hearing about resources, yet Aerofly put out a pretty good Vr implementation in record time, and that companies entire workforce could fit in a shoebox.

Come to think of it, Flyinside is tiny as a gnat itself, and nevertheless implemented vr in multiple sim formats.........

As flyinside is a specialist in VR implementation, they could well do a better job of VR (with many more features) than Asobo as it would be a new learning curve for them.

Specs: Win10, 4790K, nVidia 1080ti, Saitek Yoke+Quadrant+Radio/Switch and AP panels, VRInsight 737 overhead, Virtual Avionics 737 MCP. 3 x 1440*900 main display + 1024*600 VDU display. NLR V3 Motion seat. Oculus DK2 CV1 HTC Vive VR headsets.

Making a game render in a VR projection is either no work if you're using an engine like Unity or Unreal or a small amount of work for a custom engine.

The time consuming bit is "everything else" that a VR games needs including:

- VR controller interaction with game objects
- VR compatible menu systems and overlays
- Adaptive performance optimisation to render at the headset's refresh rate

With all that said, it's the kind of thing that one or two full time developers in a team could handle.

I'm still surprised that with a team as large as the Asobo MSFS team has become, VR wasn't worked on right from the start.

I do wonder if it's a political decision tied to the release of an XBox Scarlett VR headset. Either that or someone high up in the decision making chain isn't a fan of VR.
It being a developer resource issue just doesn't make sense to me for a game with this budget.

(By contrast seasons or ATC is much, much more work).

Yes that's the very reason that upsets the "VR fanatics" and make them doubt Microsoft's committment to VR.

IPCS developed Aerofly FS2 which has built-in VR at launch, and it is the best VR implementation for any current flight simulator. The entire team of this flight sim consists of two main programmers. https://www.aerofly.com/community/forum/index.php?thread/8210-slow-progress/&pageNo=2

If you skip to 20:00, they cover more on implementation of VR. And have said they will try their best to get it in the Sim on release.

Interesting! Transcript of that part:

"Well, so I would say it this way, as I said earlier we are listening carefully to what the community is saying, and right after the E3 trailer came out there was a lot of people making that exact assumption that, "oh yeah, this better be supporting VR right from the get-go".

It honestly wasn't our plan, but we are listening, and we heard it, so we will try our darnedest to make it happen. Whether or not we're going to pull it off for launch, we don't .. we can't commit to that at this point in time, but we have the desire. Given that we genuinely want to make the sim that simmer want, we will try to prioritise that over other things.
[...]
We'll adjust our plans based on feedback we're getting."

Their words, not ours. Lol. Looks like Microsoft and Asobo want to be proactive and not reactive.

That's all I could ask from them.  It is good to see that it will be implemented.  When it is, I will pick it up.

Insert the term “seasons” for “VR” in your quote.

Do we invalidate votes from current users of Aerofly or XP who don’t have Seasons in their current sim?

The difference is that seasons don't require any special hardware so are something that can benefit and be used by everyone. VR is limited only to those with the appropriate hardware.
