You're watching your hobby suddenly get a lot bigger in real time

To be honest, I think that's what's annoying some people who are far too precious about their 'special little world' not remaining their sole preserve.

They are much like people who follow a band for years and have ridiculous disdain for anyone who is a new fan who hasn't got every single, album (and bootleg) the band has ever released, and been to every single gig.

When people with that attitude are annoyed, good. It's hilarious; it's like they don't want the band they claim to admire, to be successful and get some reward for the music they make.

We can always tell people that we were flight simmers before flight simming was cool. 😄

Go one better, tell them you were a flight simmer before aeroplanes were invented.

You're talking about BalloonSim when it would take a day to get to Gatwick from Heathrow. Oh, still does on the M25....

May all your landings be safe ones!

Before I read your first line, I was going to post exactly the same thing. I cite my favourite current band, Muse, as a prime example. So many 'diehards' from the very beginning who hate the new stuff (still buying it and going to the gigs of course), and hate that they have "gone commercial", as if any successful band could afford to keep churning out albums and going on world tours if they still had only the 20 fans in a sawdust floor pub cellar that they started off with.🙄

The diehard simmers will make the MSFS an initial success and will certainly be the ones who keep the third party devs going, but the long-term success will rely on total sales of the sim, and for a 10 year plus future, that requires the gamerz, the casuals, the 'i'll do some things properly and others just how I feel' brigade (guilty as charged M'Lud!),... oh, and the diehards to invest their hard-earned.

Great analogy. Nicely stated!

Removed unnecessary long quote!

I just want to know how they will deal with griefing, imagine flying an intercontinental flight with no time compression in multiplayer only for someone to intentionally fly into you on short final while inverted in an airliner 😬.  People can fly however they like, but I hope there will be options for different levels of game play style in multiplayer to keep everyone happy.

I doubt there will be collision between players.

I seem to remember watching a multiplayer video in which the youtuber mentioned he had turned off that setting, so it would appear it is in fact modelled. At least insofar as other critical failures are (black screen).

There were always legit reasons to turn off crash detection in every version of fsx or p3d, perhaps this is the reason we do that in msfs

I can't take it anymore.  Looking at these YouTube videos of people flying around previewing FS2020 just hurts looking at it.  Had one guy flying around Miami with flaps deployed through the whole city (previewing scenery is one thing not understanding the aircraft is another), another person keeps previewing airliners with no ATC wondering why he can't get his approach right (actually it's rare to find anyone previewing airliners using ATC),  and others that flat out don't know how an aircraft operates having issues with correct stall/spin procedures.  Many also don't know how to use the autopilot and no understanding of basic autobrake operation.

My point is this, there is no way I would want to be flying in the world of FS with these folks.  No way I would want them directing ATC procedures.  This utopianistic view of flying in a world with others would be frustrating.  In FS you don't have to know real world procedures nor do you have to care.  There's a reason why things are done a certain way in the real world that doesn't have to be taken into account virtually.  I for one hope further development is done on default ATC and we get a program developed like 'Ultimate Traffic'.  There is no way I would want to share the virtual skies with these folks.

Maybe we need a DCS-style modern plane designed for air combat. Avsim users can form squadrons and engage any newbs who break basic protocol.

It would probably help people learn if - whenever they fly through the city at 300 knots with your flaps at 40 degrees - someone takes them out with an AMRAAM.

Asobo, if you're listening, how about it?

I’ll welcome them with arms spread like eagle’s wings if their infusion of cash enables long term development of the platform. And I guarantee a few of these “filthy casuals” will find a passion for aviation they never realized they had. Bring it on!

A Bruce Artwick quote during the time of Flight Simulator II

”Some buy it just for the fun of flying around. A lot buy it because they like the graphics.  There’s an arcade game built into it, so some people buy it for that. And some people actually want to use it to practice flying. All of these elements - the game, flying, and nice scenery combine to attract a few from here and there.”
