Grass Developers Deserve a Medal

I have noticed a definite improvement in the grass lately. Take a look at this.  Different types of grass, variations in height, thickness, color etc.  Non-uniform grass.  Patchy grass in dry areas.  Short light grass near dirt paths.  Top job that.

Greazer.

  • That sim video appears to be taken in the Alps, and yet the grass is clearly poa pratensis, when everyone knows that the predominant species in that area is festuca rubra.  This is an outrage! I

  • Oh I don't know. Egos perhaps?

Are you sure someone hasn't just set the tree slider too low?😉

In all seriousness though, grass does look pretty good, although this example is of course from an ORBX add-on, rather than a default airport.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

I second the OP. I hated the sandpaper texture that is grass in all other simulators. Apart from looking great it also gives the appearance of speed when taking off and landing.

When they first announced grass for the sim I though a 3PD could easily sell a grass addon; There would be a big market for it (not saying that the default is no good and it has clearly improved). All sorts of grass colours, shapes, heights, seasonal changes, growth patterns, flowers, mown lawns, crops, wild, etc. I would certainly pay for a well made grass addon and suspect it would become one of the best selling addon for the sim.

Yes but this is the procedurally generated grass, indicative of what is possible anywhere including default airports.

I have to say, I'm quite disappointed with Asobo for not modelling the itty bitty ladybugs, spiders and cobwebs etc. between the individual blades of grass.

Are you sure? All other Orbx airports in other sims had grass too even when the sim didn’t create it natively.

The grass is great everywhere even in default areas.

I am still amazed at the difference having grass makes.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Kudos to them. I have to say they were ambitious to implement grass worldwide on the base scenery. If they had implemented in a wrong manner, it would certainly kill the performance.

That would kill the sales of the upcoming release of Ladybugs Simulator 2.0. Like the EyE phone App store you can sell any thing to this group.🤣

Lady bug Simulator possible in MSFS using the new 3080 Ti, as Real as it gets, even for Lady bugs.

Jorg Neumann is a botanist. And based on his last interviews, if Martial Bossard doesn’t put some limits, I think we might see ladybugs migration implemented. 😂

IL2 Sturmovik had grass something like 10 years ago and I agree, it makes a big difference for immersion.

The grass in MSFS is much better than the stuff Orbx used to use in P3D. What I’m seeing in that video looks like the default procedural grass. It does have a lot of variation and it goes past grass. For example, dry areas have overlays of small rocks and thin ground foliage too.

Anyone know if the grass in any way simulates variations on wheel drag based on length/wet/dry?
