Lot of mesh problems in mountains (See pictures)

Absolutely. It's the only way to see these disappear.

How hard is it to run the mesh against the widely-available SRTM data?  We don't need thousands of beta testers looking for this--this should be done in an automated QC process.

I just flew from Honolulu across the south end of Oahu, over to Kaneohe Bay and then back across mid-island...lots of morphing terrain there.  It appears that the trees are placed based on the higher LOD mesh, which isn't visible at a distance, giving the appearance of hundreds of trees floating in mid-air above the skyline.  As you approach, the mesh morphs to the (sometimes significantly different) higher-LOD shape and then the trees match up better with the underlying terrain.

I was kind of hoping that floating objects and morphing terrain and textures were a thing of the past...

Trust me you will not have to fly far outside US and Europe to find miss matched tile lines in the scenery, the tiles stick out like a sore thumb.

There are plenty in the US as well, even at some major airports...

They mapped 200 million square miles, and 99% of it is accurate.  I wouldnt worry about 1% being immersion-breaking.

When the country you live in and have come to love is ruined by mesh issues everywhere, it sort of matters.

I also believe it will eventually be fixed and didn’t expect a flawless experience from day 1. Lots of other places to explore for now.

What I haven't figured out where the mesh is stored (I assume the sim must have some sort of base mesh installed for those who fly offline and do not get their elevation data streamed via Azure. So it should theoretically be possible). And I also haven't figured out how to add new scenery to the sim so that it reads it and displays it.

On the Flight Simulator forum

MSFS uses a different projection (Bing Map’s version of a Mercator projection) for the world than FSX/P3D (Geographic projection, i.e. WGS84). MSFS also dispenses with QMID levels. For these reasons mesh created for the former will not work with the latter, even if placed in the correct location.

So we will need to buy a new sharper mesh, hoping it won’t upset the other elements of the terrain.

Yes, I noticed this around India and Nepal (Himalaya area).

Intel i9 - GPU RTX 3080 - 32 gig RAM HyperX Fury DDR 4

I would say we see two issues in this thread

- a poor choice of mesh. We saw that on this forum and said it very early in 2019.  I suppose the same happened on the alpha forum.  Fell in deaf ears. In this regard, FS20 fits perfectly in the FS family of sims (incl. P3D) which have always been behind their times as far mesh was concerned. As I remember, the very first addon that I ever bought was a mesh for 2K2 (FS Genesis) !

- an absence of quality control (lakes on plateaus and other horrors), here as in many other aspects of the sim.

It certainly needs a better mesh. And by that I not only mean the general resolution, but also filling up the lower LOD levels. It's like FSX out of the box in that regard. You get those mesh lines in the distance were you can basically see through the terrain. The difference is that the void below it is not blue like in FSX, so it is not as noticeable. But it is there. I just flew along the soutthern coast of Australia west of Melbourne and it was everywhere.

By the way Dominique, your link was the wrong one

This is the correct one:

The other fellow told me that some landmark peaks were even unrecognisable !

He’s absolutely right. Here are some screenshots of some of the most famous Swiss peaks and what they should look like. It should be noted that these are extreme examples, other regions look much better.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get much better in the Dolomites (San Vito di Cadore, Italy).

Now the good news. When I revisited Makalu I was surprised to find that it doesn't look too bad at all.

1S3Q9pr.jpgtwDEc2t.jpg

As this official early Alpha screenshot clearly shows there must have been an elevation data update in the area around Everest, Lhotse and Makalu.

iiSGGED.jpgQb6W2OU.jpg

Interestingly, Makalu and the surrounding area still looks rubbish in Earth View. Previously, both imagery and elevation were identical in Earth View and the sim. Surprised by these findings I opened the Maps app and found that the sim's Makalu looks like the one in Maps.

Maps does also have better elevation data for the places shown at the top, but apparently they haven't been updated in the sim yet. They still look the same as in Earth View.

Okay, the last two places may not look that much better in Maps and there's still a long way to go but it shows me that at least something's happening.

Absolutely, it is clear in Bob Scott's post too. Incomprehensible, this is the basic of scenery making.

Thank you very much, nobody wouldn't have thought of that 😄.

We  have been saying that the mesh was not very good on this forum for many months, throughout the updates, and the alpha testers did the same. From the Avsim forum perspective, we couldn't see the layering issues. I suppose the testers could and reported them. On the table below, the Terrain/mesh issues have been here almost since the beginning. It stayed blank most of the time, the yellow "in progress" is relatively new.

FS-v8.01v2.jpg

Unfortunaley, these are not bugs, like having a black tower building in the middle of nowhere is a bug, but the result of the choice of  coarse meshes, apparent bad management of the LOD mesh layering and a bad synchronisation  between the mesh and the water bodies elements (lakes and river). FSX all over again.

I am optimistic that we'll find a solution for the mesh. Most certainly, a TPD  addon at 100 EUR a pop. I  hope that we won't need Orbx to make another Vector 😁
