Reality in sim vs. Previews

Featured Replies

If I had to guess, the Oceania "trailer" probably used captured footage from weeks ago, using a pre-release build that had a closer-to-final version of the water masking.  We already know the sim can do it just fine, because certain areas currently have it, and Asobo themselves have said it's a work in progress.

Some of you guys are way too quick to jump to conspiratorial takes, or "they lied!!!!!" explanations.

That's called photoshop. Works great for promotions.

Kinda hard to photoshop a video...

Nope, it isn't.

That's shameful. It's one of the few structures that can be seen from space. It's magnificent.

Thank you.

One of the first things I did was fly out over the Great Barrier Reef only to find it's completely missing.

I'd imagine it's coming in a future update.

Hopefully, but I wouldn‘t bet on it coming soon. The problem is that Bing’s water imagery for the Barrier Reef is far from great. Some of the islands such as the Whitsunday Islands look good but the reefs further out are extremely low-res (see Maps app). I doubt that we‘ll see much of an improvement there unless Bing Maps update their imagery, or 3rd party devs step in.

Of course it is, those videos would need a "work in progress" hint or something similar. Showing videos out of the product with things on it that does (not yet) exist in the product without clearly stating it, is false advertising, easy as that.

I really wonder why the simming community still accepts every bull* without questioning it, we should finally stop looking at the simming world with the naive way that was ok some 20y ago. Nowadays it is "big business" and as such, the same rules should apply.

Or otherwise, devs and publisher will abuse the naivity sooner or later (some already try it...), when we will continue to praise everything just because it is new and it is available (although unfinished). This attitude was valuable and fine back in the days most of the addons were freeware and done by few enthusiasts. Today, companies earn solid money, so they should get their stuff right and not abuse the naive community that accepts everything without questioning the quality. End of rant.

Lol. It’s actually the best example for false advertising

I wonder how they got those buttery smooth FPS in the official previews. Settings are obviously maxed out yet it is as smooth as those FPS/speed-manipulated and postprocessed youtube clips out there.

Maybe Nvidia ran some FS tests with their upcoming 3080/3090 and Microsoft asked to use it for trailers. It would be THE performance test 🙂

Yeah, I've seen the sat images and you're right they're pretty bad but anything is better than nothing.

Nothing in the video says it's currently in the sim, it's a trailer.

you must have missed the quote "captured ingame"

Lol. Come on now. Of all the visual advancements that this sim has made, you really think it's water masking that they're going to fake?

well they did. just stating facts

We already had this entire discussion two weeks ago and the developers have also stated that these water mask features are currently WIP.
