Question to TrackIR users

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm planning to use my newly bought TrackIR with MSFS and my question is to those, who already use TrackIR. Could you please tell me what your TrackIR config is? Precisely, I'd like to know:

- the value of your Speed & Smooth sliders
- which profile you use (Default, Smooth or One:One)?
- what are your key bindings for Center, Pause and Precision?
- do you use Precision mode?
- have you made any changes to Pitch, Roll and Yaw axes and if so, what Point X and Y values do you use?
- have you changed anything in MSFS settings to make it work better with TrackIR?

Thank you very much!

I'm totally fine on default profile settings across the board. When flying combat flight sims I use a different one sometimes to help me check behind more easily/quickly and it has a reduced Z-axis but for MSFS default seems fine to me and I like being able to use a good sized Z-axis to lean in to view the Garmin data. Some people use the Seth profile that can be found here: https://forums.naturalpoint.com/viewtopic.php?p=40686#p40686

You don't need to change any settings to make it work better with TrackIR. Just check that you can see MS Flight Simulator 2020 in the titles list and you're good to go.

I use default mode but just adjust the smoothness and speed sliders to your liking.  I always use Precision mode as it's way too erratic otherwise.

+ 1 for Seth_Flight profile in the ink above.

Use that to start and tweak to your exact liking from there.

I went with the default option but I did change the curve for the "Yaw" movement a fair amount as I felt it was too sensitive. I set it to be slower in the cockpit and then speed up as I look towards 90 degrees+. Mirrored for left and right. I also made the null area a tiny fraction larger so it is easier to keep my head still when looking ahead in the cockpit. Important when trying fiddling with buttons and dials. I set the Pause and the reset view to two buttons on my yoke. These are the only ones you will really use often. You have to set these assignments in the track IR App, not in the sim. Be careful not to assign them in the sim to something else. Setting them to your controller is ideal as I had to lean a bit forward to reach the keyboard, meaning when you reset the view, the position is not right. You need to be able to reset the view while seated in the exact positioin you will be flying in.

HOWEVER it is subjective and everyone will, have personal preferences. It is easy to make changes on the fly (s'cuse the pun) as you can ALT-TAB from the sim to the Track IR software and back again to test how changes affect your views.

Another tip - if you can afford yet another button on your controller, set it up to reset the sim default view (Control-Space). This is done in Sim controller options. This comes in handy if you have used the hat switch for example. Also, be aware that the pause view function does have a minor but irritating bug. When pausing view it does pause for a moment before moving to a still paused but default straight ahead view. You then need to use the hat switch to move back to the paused view you want.

You must persist with it. Takes a while to get used to it but after a while, you won't be able to fly without it. It really does add another dimension to the sim.

While TIR5 works well for me in most respects, it does have a couple of quirks. If I look to the left and move my head towards the monitor, my eyepoint should move towards the nose of the aircraft, and that's what happens in other sims. In MSFS 2020 my eyepoint moves towards the left door. If I want to look over my left shoulder and move my eyepoint closer to the door, I actually have to move my head to the right. More annoyingly, I've also found is that (as someone reported in another thread) the TIR eyepoint freeze command only holds for about a second before the view snaps back to straight ahead, so I can't use this technique for adjusting radio or FMS knobs or for anything else that calls for fine mouse manipulation.

I never had this, although it has been mentioned by others. My pause key is F9 (as per default profile in TrackIr software).

Could it be that the key bound in trackir to pause is also bound to something else in MSFS?

I've timed this at 6 seconds.  Are you really getting such a short period?

I'd prefer if you paused the viewpoint that it would stay in the direction you were looking.

Do you have "True View" activated in the TIR UI?

Another tip might be to disable the roll axis completely. Probably a question of personal taste, but I find the roll movements annoying.

Lucky you.

I get it. Very annoying.  If I want to turn the heading knob for instance I pause trackIR, turn the knob a little, unpause then pause for more turning. Not exactly efficient.

I’m using buttons on my HOTAS Warthog throttle. Hmm, maybe it’s mapped to something else, don’t think I’ve checked that.

no one else's "config" will suit you ....... what you "fly", what monitor you use, where you sit etc. etc. etc.

it is a case of 'experiment intelligently & learn by discovery" ..... you will enjoy your investment (but remember no bright background lighting ,,,, the proclip is best)

for now, cheers

I just timed it, and you're right - I make it about 6 seconds. But it still means you have to be quick and accurate if you're trying to set a frequency, for example.

No I didn't (I've no idea why), but activating it fixed that problem. Thank you.
