Upgrade to Prepar3d v5 still worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi,

after moving from my rusty 4770K to a completely new build based on the 10700K (and hopefully a 3080 with 20Gb soon), I'm back into flight simming after a long break. Of course I bought MFS but since I'm a tubeliner guy, it cannot replace a Prepar3d install yet. So my big question is whether I should make the upgrade from v4.5 to v5, knowing that probably in a year or so, it will be all MFS when PDMG and the likes release decent tubeliners for MFS. In that regard I have one specific question: Does Prepar3d v5 require scenery updates or do the v4 sceneries still work? I know that a lot of developers have released free updates but some want an update fee and I don't want to spend money on sceneries in Prepar3d anymore, knowing that in a year or so, I will most likely have moved on to MFS. Thanks for your answers!

If EA gets fixed, I still see myself using P3D for some time. Even in its current state, I am definitely getting some enjoyment out of it.

Regarding sceneries, most things work but with EA enabled there is a higher chance of graphical glitches.

I have a fully loaded P3D v4.5HF3 and I'm filled with joy every time I fire it up. I tried v5 and decided to stick with V4.5HF3. I have too many payware airports that need to be updated and v5 stability was questionable at the time of testing. My advice is to stick with v4.5 until MSFS 2020 matures.

V5 all the way for me. Like V4.5 but with a fixed sun in EA. Flying it right now

Of all my 43 addon airports only 6 needed a free update. Everything working great.

But then I made a change after an idea from Lorby Si. I made a P3D v5 - Fake default folder where I put in the main core dll’s. All Addons are installed into that folder. The folder is connected through an xml file to the real P3D v5 folder.

So I have a clean default V5. And am waiting for v5.1 to have extra EA features .

Regarding MSFS : I have a hard feeling that it will ever become an IFR sim.  Ultra eyecandy and fast jetflying = not smooth. It’s all about balance....All jetliner vids show smooth gauges but stutters in the outside views.

LOL, same thing people say about every new sim iteration.  Did your P3D look like it does today day 1?  Did it perform within it's first two weeks to the level it performs today?

Same old narrative every time a new sim is released and it is almost always based on emotion and investment in the prior sim platform...

Have a Wonderful Day

I am not “the same people”.

P3D did not look like it does from day 1 but from day one there was an enhanced SDK so all kinds of hardware could be connected.

From day 1 you could fly at Mach 1 without stutters over a vanilla P3D.

MSFS already stutters with the simple default  Jetliners. Imagine what will happen when a PMDG or FsLabs ac is added.

Its either eyecandy + performance with slow and not too complex ac or way less eyecandy + jetliner performance with more complex ac ...

TileProxy learned us that streaming tiles is possible but at the cost of speed. Works Terrain is the successor of TL and at 120-140 knots the system starts to get in trouble.

You have to be realistic : you cannot have it all ..

Your “same people” are realistic people ....

I am also very skeptical about flying a complex aircraft like fslabs or pmdg with good stable stutterless/free sim in MSFS.

And I use VR. I have a decent system and still I am assuming it will at least take 1 year from now for me to get in MSFS what I get with P3D V5 today.

But it is all about opinions, thoughts and meanings. No one has the magic glasses to look in the future.

But if you take some data and facts right now, msfs has a lot to do to get much more performance out of it. And as the SDK is far from a needed state to implement complex planes it will take some time too.

I would love to see solutions in short time....but that is only hope and wishful thinking.

My mind says it will take between 9 and 12 months from now.

So my opinion is that upgrading to v5 is really worth it.

Vast majority of stuff for preceding versions of P3D (and FSX in many cases) works in P3D V5. Most of the time it is just a case of manually pointing the installer at the V5 installation, and so many of the freebie 'upgrades' are merely automating that process, which means if they don't do that, you can still do so yourself manually. In a couple of cases, I had to have an FSX install in order to have some very old stuff actually commence installing, but then it was just a case of dragging folders over, so no big deal there either. Literally the only V4 thing I've not been able to put into V5, is the V4 SimWorks Studios' Nimitz-Class aircraft carriers, and as far as I'm aware they are patching that, and may already have done so (not checked recently).

P3D V5 is a massive improvement on preceding versions of Prepar3D, it looks better, it runs better and it has many more features which make it a worthwhile upgrade. Not least of which is that it can actually use your modern PC hardware properly, so finally that expensive GPU you sold a kidney for, is more that just something which gives your PC case an nice red glowing light these days. Now it can actually improve frame rates.

Moreover, in spite of the shiny new MS sim, P3D isn't going away any time soon. Sure some developers might be not quite so keen to be committing to making long-term projects for it now, but this does not mean their long term projects for the new MS sim would be any quicker, so P3D remains a viable platform for everything you already have, and if you want to shoot an ILS into a realistic Manchester Airport in a realistic A320 or DC-8 or whatever, you ain't gonna be doing that any time soon in the new MS flight sim for all its good points.

If you want a quick (ish) rundown of all the plus points to V5, the start of this review video I made for it literally goes through all of them (time stamp 5:30) and this might help you to decide if it will float your boat:

In light of today's announcement from FS Labs that Concorde 64-bit is "unpaused" I would imagine they're developing for P3Dv5.

Can you imagine the demands on the system flying at Mach 2 (1,350mph; 23 miles a minute) over MFS scenery that needs downloading from servers? It would look dreadful unless cached and could conceivably crash the PC. No sooner have you downloaded it than you've passed it! 😁

MFS looks fantastic for VFR flying but P3D will always be preferred by many for IFR.

Most of the reasons for upgrading to V5 have been mentioned by others. The main reason for me going to V5? LM upgraded a lot of the airports.  This included removing the abandoned airstrips that have been closed for years and adding new ones. In my part of the world they did a fairly could job of keeping the abandon airports that are still being used and removing the ones that are grown over.

To be fair: you are allowed to supersonic speed only over the sea 😉

And sparsely populated land. On Concorde's 1999 Round The World Tour the first leg was JFK to Vancouver. They went supersonic SE of Hudson Bay for a significant part of the trip flying well north of the GC Route. Early flights from London to Bahrain also overflew the Saudi desert until the KIng found out the sonic boom affected the fertility of his camels!

If Concorde was still flying today I imagine it could fly supersonic over central Australia.
