September 4, 20205 yr I’m running MSFS on a very new (and well-ventilated) Dell XPS 8930, and the fan runs constantly even with the graphics set to low end. For comparison, in X-Plane the fan remains silent after the flight is loaded. While I know that MSFS is much more demanding, the problem is there even with low graphic settings. I’ve turned off multiplayer/group, AI or live traffic, and live weather. The view is acceptable, with minimal stuttering, but the constant fan can’t be good for the PC, so I’d like to solve this. These are my specs: i9-9900 CPU at 3.10GHz 32 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Monitor 1080p at 60 Hz As an example using the Cessna 152, this is my CPU and GPU usage, and FPS. (With the B747, the FPS is much lower, and in all settings is limited by MainThread): Low-end graphics: CPU-58% GPU-56% 50-55 FPS High-end graphics: CPU-62% GPU-65% 40-45 FPS Ultra graphics: Internal 30-35 External 30-35 CPU-61% GPU-65% 30-35 FPS (During the initial loading, with the images of plans in the air, the FPS is 300-500). Any ideas for solving this would be appreciated!
September 4, 20205 yr put hyperthreading on, but this sim is way way more heavy than xp. maybe you need a better cooler fan !!, default ìntel fans are pretty yuck. a constant fan should not be a problem for any wellmade pc.
September 4, 20205 yr You can use MSI Afterburner to set a custom GPU fan curve. Might taking some playing around with it as obviously you have to balance fan speed and temps. You're definitely not going to get complete fan stops when running this sim though. For my MSI 2070 super the stock settings are that the fan doesn't spin if the GPU temp < 60C. In the sim the fan has to run at 60% in order for GPU temps to stay around around 60C. It's still pretty quiet running at that % though so I'm fine with that.
September 4, 20205 yr The fan is supposed to run. The higher the GPU temp, the higher the fan speed. Why are people in this forum so stuck up about the fan's running and high GPU usage? Are they not used to it or something? Like the poster above stated, use MSI afterburner to create a curve. Also, if you're using a stock graphics card and not an aftermarket one, I find their fans rubbish in comparison. So, I water-cooled mine. I have also used Accelerometer Extreme IV fan system to cool it in the past and that is way better than the stock cooler.
September 4, 20205 yr Quote fan runs constantly This is what is supposed to happen under load. I'm not understanding the issue here? September 4, 20205 yr When I run it full-screen, the fan stays silent. When I minimize it, the fan starts running. Something weird is going on there...
September 4, 20205 yr Wow. I have only once heard my new system, and only because I had muted the sound at the time. Very faint. Thrilled. September 4, 20205 yr "The" fan? Your PC only has one? CPU fans, GPU fans, case fans, PSU fan, water-cooling radiator fans...hard to answer the OP with no idea which one(s) we're talking about. That said, any of the fans running constantly is *not* bad for the computer. A fan not running when it should (when what it cools is getting hot) is what's bad. I've seen posts in other threads where people are getting worried and contacting their system supplier because the GPU reached a temperature of 68-70, it's absolutely nothing to worry about! I don't actually see any temperatures mentioned in the OP so i'd be interested to know these.

If you use an external FPS limiter, like NCP or RTSS, you can limit to say 30 fps, and your GPU will not be working as hard. Some on this forum do not like this approach, but for me it works nicely. Indeed...or use a 30Hz-capable display, set the refresh rate to 30Hz in nVidia Control Panel and use VSync to limit frame rate to the 30 Hz hardware refresh rate.
