Did We Really Need a Super Computer

As I have just upgraded from an old PC I could/would answer your question perfectly, but as you clearly not using the sim. It's pointless and so is your topic and your not worth the time.

Why didn't you then?

I tend to agree, I got a ryzen 3600, 2060 and 32RAM and I can't complain.

I run between high and ultra settings on a 1080 monitor and I (almost) don't have any stutter or performance issue.

The best thing is there is not much difference between high and ultra, but performance relies heavily on resolution.

You are halfway between the recommended PC and "ideal" so it is not surprising the system runs fine at 1080p.

I bet the killer then could be between the 1080p and 4K which makes sense?

The people buying 3080 cards are invariably running 4K either on a monitor or HDR television.

Most people getting newer monitors are going for a minimum of 144hz 1440p or a 4K,

1080p ruled for nearly 15 years but is not really a thing anymore except at the ultra budget end.

My question is, I see people panicking all the time on here and on social media "Will my system run it" paying £1000's on new equipment etc, but if my system can run it smoothly, did we really need a super computer that everybody thought / thinks we need to run MSFS?

Most of these comments I've read are on Youtube and in reddit. My take on it is that the people who post them are not in AVSIM.They seem to be mostly 'gamers' who play a wide range of PC games and are "benchmarking" their hardware for Frame Rates.

If you've been following AVSIM like me for the past 16 years then you'll know that 30fps is a dream for MSFS (FS9, FSX). Tell that to a kid who wants to blow up people at 100fps, and whose world has been shaped by faster frames = better performance. Considering that prior to the NVIDIA RTX3000 series launch, the max fps in MSFS on a RTX 2080 at 4K was in the high 30s, its no wonder people think this sim is a hardware hog.

However, if you look back in time every MSFS title since FS9 has only worked best on a (Intel) CPU where single threaded performance at high clock speed is more important. I remember landing in a FSX slideshow at EGLL while on VATSIM with UK2000 scenery and frame rate heavy AI models around.. Moving from an Athlon XP 1800+ to a Pentium Core 2 Duo e8400 Wolfdale was like a night and day difference to me on FS9/FSX. And then again when I moved onto an i5-4670k.

The same has been commented about MSFS in that it tends to hog one CPU thread more than others. MSFS always seems to have been CPU limited as a title. And every new generation of CPUs delivered better performance for the ageing sim. I feel that in 3 years time you'll have CPUs and GPUs that will have no issues running MSFS with a PMDG B747 flying through NYC,

Says the user that posts exact system specs in his signature? Obviously its apparent your not mature enough to have a discussion so I suggest you leave this thread and comment on something more in line with your intelligence quota.

Speaking of intelligence, it’s ‘you’re’ 🙂

Actually kind of agree. I have a proper old system (unlike yours :D), 1080p monitor, FX8350, GTX1050Ti.

I knew for sure i couldnt run the game even in my wildest dream. Then somehow bought it anyway 😄

To my utter suprise, i could run it, granted in 1080p and in Medium settings and get 30fps most of the the time. Even better, at medium, it already looks bloody amazing.  So yea, what threw people off was probably the 4K thing, as its the new standard, specs had to be recommended according to that new standard, hence the pretty beefy recommended specs.

And lastly, enjoy P3D while it lasts 🙂

As I said I've uninstalled and gone back to P3D as I'd rather have a simulator than a game?

I'll assume your confusion is sincere, and say the fact that you've mentioned MSFS being a "game" not a sim twice in your first three posts in this thread, are why people are assuming the existence of this thread was just a disingenuous pretext to slag MSFS.  You wouldn't be the first one, and some people have grown a little tired of it.

Also, I'm not clear on who actually said a "supercomputer" would be required to run the sim.  The system requirements were put out like a month before it came out, and your specs would be well within that spectrum.

As we’re on the topic, it’s also ‘obviously it’s apparent’, ‘apparent is redundant as it has the same meaning as ‘obviously’, and it’s ‘intelligence quotient’.

Here is a bit of trivia, the quote "To boldly go where no man has gone before. " of Star Trek fame is a split infinitive and grammatically incorrect .

Oooooh, as a descriptive (vs prescriptive) grammarian, I’m triggered!

Technically it should be:

EITHER

To go boldly where no man has gone before.

OR

Boldly to go where no man has gone before.
