Thanks for these links David. This is a wonderful community.

IMO, if a simmer loves VFR flying, there's nothing that even comes close to this sim and the best part is that you don't even need the latest and greatest computer to run it.

Totally agree and your welcome DJ. But hey! I have to keep telling myself " each to there own"

Apparently we‘re getting photogrammetry for London (around 28 min.)

Found this on the official forum.

The photogrammetry model was made by a British company called Bluesky. It seems that having "blue" in the company name is one of the main criteria for a partnership with MSFS.

On their website they also sell photogrammetry for Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge and Nottingham (https://www.blueskymapshop.com/products/metrovista).

They also have a short video of the St. Paul's area in photogrammetry (https://www.bluesky-world.com/post/2020/01/27/bluesky-launches-metrovista-3d-city-models-online).

Any photogrammetry for the UK has to be welcomed. Hopefully it can be expanded to other areas of the country, not just the south east of England.

Hmm so where does that leave us with the Orbx London landmarks, am guessing that’s now redundant?

I wouldn't call Birmingham, Bristol and Nottingham as being in the south east of England. 🙂

Might even see Glasgow at some point too.

Photogrammetry isn't for everyone. It has some obvious drawbacks, namely that 'melted building look' and some obvious popping moving within different LOD distances - see here. The Orbx product will still be useful for anyone not enamoured with photogrammetry and have it turned off in the sim.

I would hope that Orbx will eventually update their Landmarks package to be compatible with photogrammetry, especially if people ask nicely (in fact, I'll go ask them now).
Personally, I'd prefer to have proper 3D POI models replacing the LiDAR photogrammetry ones wherever possible. That's obviously down to an individual's taste.

No, but I was referring to more locations being added to the sim. Anyway, some of us know "The North" as Aberdeen, Wick, Thurso and Lerwick, rather than Carlisle, Durham, Bradford and Newcastle...😉

Certainly, as long as there's the option to turn photogrammetry off, there's no reason not to have as much of it as possible available in the sim.

I live in Bristol, so it would be great to have real scenery.  I use Mark Taylor's add on for the city centre, but it really needs to be optimised to avoid a big frame rate hit.  I previously lived near Southampton, which is modelled in the sim and my old house is there down to the actual window alterations and garage I had built on, along with the superstore a few yards away right down to the Tesco Extra signage on it. I even flew past the Southampton football ground and noticed the Ikea sign on the Ikea building.  I really adore this type of scenery and wonder how soon all the major cities will be modelled.  Frame rates over areas modelled photographically in the sim are surprisingly good.

I'm not sure I've come across much photogrammetry that I've liked so far. If you're high up the autogen stuff gets the job done in most places.

Lower down that melted look really doesn't work well for me. Maybe there's a sweet spot but at places like Boston Logan where the photogrammetry encroaches on the airport the transition is very jarring and really not pretty.

It's the future. But it ain't here yet.

Live in Briz also, yeah I've binned Mark's stuff for now, still have Clifton suspension and both Severn bridges in there though. Really hope Bristol makes the cut, lots of history and iconic structures (already mentioned one) - Brunel, home of Concorde say no more.

Obviously I'm biased and everything corner of the UK rightly has a claim - well maybe not Trowbridge - or Bridgewater.

Edinburgh, Bath, Liverpool, Dublin, Chester, Salisbury - so many places which would make great Photogrammetry.

oh and according to my Boltonian Wife South is London basically.

Did I hear South Korea?! An World update South Korea would be amazing. That’s a country that never had any attention on the other sims. Israel also seems interesting.

Dublin? UK?😜

Just pulling your leg - I'm sure you weren't implying that! And of course, the update is due to include RoI, so a valid point I agree with.😊

@Carts85 Here is Orbx's reply to my earlier question regarding London landmarks compatibility:

Quote

fair question though we can't say anything definitive until we have had a chance to check ourselves.

Generally speaking, photogrammetry is essentially a patch of high-resolution terrain mesh and thus individual areas can be overridden with small flatten polygons. We already have those in place for most of the London POI models. However, we've also placed quite extensive flatten polys elsewhere across the city and river to fix those odd bumps and holes visible in the default terrain. It's possible that those will suppress the photogrammetry in those areas.

We'll assess the best approach for addressing any visual issues asap after release of the World Update: patch, separate version, some "hybrid" option...

As for the MS upgrades making our landmark packs "obsolete": from the two released World Updates we can guess their typical content: a dozen or two custom objects, a handful of detailed airports, some general texture and terrain enhancements. Plus, potentially new photogrammetry for local areas. That doesn't really overlap too much with what we're trying to achieve, even ignoring the known issues with the mid-distance display (and night lighting) of photogrammetry.

Cheers, Holger

Thanks for that... Be interested to see how they do go about this.
