HiFi Developing Active Sky for MSFS

Even if Asobo gets the live weather working I'd still buy from HiFi.

Why? How does that make any sense if Asobo got live weather working? Why are simmers so beholden to 3PDs? If they provided a good product and word gets around and it works fine, buy it. But why the redundancy?

It’s thinking like this that gets us mediocre products, poor support and incomplete sims.

3PD definitely have a place, I used AS in P3D/FSX, but if fixed why still get it?

Would it be best to wait and see what is actually on offer.

Exciting, it just feels weird to have a flight sim where the weather is not supplied by active sky.

And if Asobo doesn’t want third parties messing with weather then they should properly fix it, soon.  Something called live weather should actually resemble current weather consistently.  Sometimes it’s kind of close, sometimes it’s so far off that a planned VFR flight ends up being impossible because the conditions are so far from real life.

Current System (Running at 4k): ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F, Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 5090, 55" Samsung Q80T, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, EVGA CLC 280mm AIO Cooler, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & Stick, Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Add-on, VirtualFly Ruddo+, TQ6+ and Yoko+, GoFlight MCP-PRO and EFIS, Skalarki FCU and MCDU

I was very surprised (in a negative way) to see the development notes mention the " not planned " wrt 3rd parties and weather.

I am more often than not disappointed in MSFS weather depiction (not the visuals, those are great). As a Foreflight user, the weather depiction is more a miss than a hit when trying to use Foreflight's weather information to plan ahead or to make decisions enroute.

I have been a long time Hi-Fi customer and I will continue to be one as long as they continue developing products. There is simply no way to quantify the value products such as ActiveSky add to my flying experience (I'm sure the other weather add-ons are good as well).

I even bought a full license of ASP3D instead of purchasing the upgrade option just to support Hi-Fi. Yes, they are THAT important to my sim experience. So, thanks @Damian Clark and your team for all these years of great weather products.

What is to be fixed?  AS for MSFS is not planning on "fixing" anything.  Instead we're trying to bring as many core AS features (and a few new ones), most of which are NOT included in MSFS (and quite probably will never be included), that users are asking for, to work within the new sim in the best way possible.  AS is a lot more than live weather.  In fact, MUCH of the feedback and demand we've seen is for other than LIVE weather!  Of course we'll also support live weather, but this is just one thing in a sea of many.

Of course MSFS bugs in many areas will be resolved and new features will be added, some enhanced.  Still struggling to see why that has anything to do with 3rd parties doing their own thing to take things further in the way they dream of.

Because 3rd parties are what really makes the sim shine!

Says you, my quote was to ryanbatcund in response that “even if” it were fixed he’d still buy your product, which is yet to be seen, which makes no logical sense.

Our original delay and reluctance to work on non-official weather interfacing was based on public videos from MS/Asobo developers during their developer chats, where they stated that they were not yet done with the weather system, would rather weather developers wait, and they didn't like the kind of unofficial interfacing that has been done in the past.  So out of respect to them, we waited.  Now they've officially killed this wish list item, setting this item to "Not Planned", so we are not waiting any longer.

Looking forward to it. Out of curiosity, I looked up my first Active Sky purchase - 12/22/03. I do have some competing products, but for weather generation, I've always used some version of AS. I actually didn't expect to need AS anymore, but...

The reality is we wouldn't be having this conversation if the MS/AS weather system worked properly. At some point, we do have to look at what is working properly and what isn't working. I think it is fair to say that it is a really mixed bag right now. I get that things come in time, but my $120 was delivered in one chunk. I'm not on a 10 year payment plan, so I at least expect the developers to either get it right or get out of the way. The 10 years is to deliver additional content and new technology, not things like properly working aircraft, an accurate weather system, and scenery that matches what what seen in the trailers. That stuff should have been there from day one.

Yes, but much of that was after official support for the product ended (FSX) leaving no alternative and was carried on as the status quo into P3D and X-Plane, but why should it continue as such?

I reckon historical weather is not important to you, but to many of us it is. I don't know how much the default weather radar (MSFS) has improved in recent updates, but it was very bad initially. That is something most tubeliners would consider important, and AS has filled that gap marvelously in recent years. That would be another improvement I'd look forward to.

So the onus should be on Asobo to deliver not to pay more to third parties, would it not?

Because the overall quality of the sim is okay, but these developers enhance it greatly.  It sounds like you are content with the state of the sim.  That's fine too!   I'm just not, and am after a more realistic experience.

My argument is not that weather (past, current, or future) is not important.

There’s room in simming for all preferences.

My argument is that finding an imperfect solution without official support (possibly yet to be determined) to a problem that may have an official solution in the future is a hasty move that may only prove wasteful.

And with that good night gentle ladies and men...

I got a flight to KATL (virtually) to catch! ✈️👌🏽🤪😂

What is so important about historic weather, do you want to fly in a hurricane or something. You can you can do that with weather preset.

Tell you what - let's remove ALL the mods and addons from MSFS. You have a nice sightseeing vehicle but not a flight sim. Maybe eventually asobo will get it together but right now, it's the 3PD commercial and free that are making the major improvements. If it weren't for 3pd development in MSFS would be horribly slow and you and many others would jump ship because by then the glow of the release will jhave faded.

Also, 3PD make changes that result in greater sales for the title and in many cases the title will try to incorporate some of the innovations into the sim.

So frankly, your perception of the necessity and effect of 3pd is way off.

While I do agree that the visual depiction of weather in MSFS is great, the accuracy of said weather, which is a lot more important, can be a hit or miss.

You make a strong case @Damian Clark and would love to see weather SDK being opened up for developers like you to utilize and work on products that can benefit everyone, despite their immediate need or approval of it or not.

I think the best way is to communicate your intent with the head of MSFS himself, Jorg Neumann. You should email him at [email protected]. I've heard he's very active on that email and responds to almost everyone.
