Wow, a 1080ti and such low, blurry settings.

Going to need a 4080 for a non-Coke bottle view it seems.

Not looking good for the 3090 either FPS wise, but then again it can be due to the Quest 2 compression load also putting a tax on performance

I can’t watch the video right now. Did he say it’s blurry, or are you basing that on the mirror view?

I want that Spitfire! Looks like a Griffon engined, Mk XIV.

To buy, or not to buy, a headset. Waiting for your experiences guys.

Yup. The move to video for imparting information is one of the very worst developments of the modern age. I will devote more time to finding a readable resource than watching a video. I find it unbearable. Lord knows how much life has been wasted already.

He has a G2 and 1080 ti so it may be different for others.

From the vid the most important points are -

Roll back your driver to 452.06 for Nvidia.

The biggest performance hits are from light shafts and glass cockpit refresh rates.

For render scaling he does 70-80 up high. 60 or less down low.

Other ones, I may have missed a few -

taa
lod 150
medium for buildings and trees
low for grass and bushes
100 object detail
high for clouds
texture - high/ultra
4x anisotropic
supersampling off
synthesis low
water waves medium
shadow maps 768
terrain shaodws off
contact shadows off
windshield - ultra
ambient occlusion - off
reflection - off
bloom - on
depth of field - off
lens correction - off
lens flare - off

He said something about keeping Openxr in automatic to get extra frames. Dunno.

He said it’s blurry but that’s OK because you’re not looking at the fine detail...

The funniest thing for all the “G2 Master Race” guys around here is that he’s turning the render scaling down to 50-60%, meaning you’ve just thrown away half of the pixels which are the main point of that HMD, just so he can get 30-ish FPS. And the. He says the Rift S is probably going to be better, though i’m not convinced he’s tested it.

Also says XP11 is currently the best VR implementation.

All in all, it’s pretty contradictory. He sounds like he’s having fun, which is great, but it’s mainly about turning off/down a lot of settings to get VR to work on his ill-advised oldish GPU/high pixel HMD combination.

I know its OT but just wanted to say AGREE FULLY!

Watching a video to hear only words is useless 99% of the time.

I'm feeling pretty good about the used Odyssey+ I just picked up right now.

Especially with GPUs so hard to come by right now....

Maybe in a year or so we will have GPUs that are actually available, and more than 1 HMD with the resolution of the G2 to pick from.

I’m actually flying with an odyssey+ atm as the first 2 oculus hmds i tried aren’t recognized by msfs.

Look, it’s a big step down from the rift s and quest 2 in terms of lenses. But the pixel count is more than enough, msfs defaults to driving 80% of the pixels and performs poorly if you crank this to 100% (with a 2080ti).

As msfs can’t drive the odyssey+ properly, the reverb g2 is completely unnecessary.

That looks like a low FPS stutter fest. I’ve never used VR before and I would like to try it. But that puts me right off.

With a RTX 2080 SC, VR with WMR portal and the HP Reverb G2 gives almost identical performance for me as I get with a 4K monitor and Track IR. My MSFS settings are mostly high with a few ultra. As others have said, the G2 has a small sweet spot, but once you get used to it, pretty much everything is readable on the panel. I'm actually quite impressed how seamless the VR is in MSFS. It's a bit clunky to have to use the keyboard and mouse instead of the VR controllers, but I can see why initially Asobo opted for that approach.
