CTDs - The 0xc0000005 nightmare

Featured Replies

Rolling and manual cache is completely turned off for me.  I experimented with it early days, but I did have various problems.  So caching of all types has been off since about November.  It did help stability and general glitches when I turned them off.

I have been fairly stable since then and not had many CTD's at all.  They just seem to have gotten worse again lately.  Although general performance has improved and the sim has been running better than ever in some ways, I have had a few of these 0xc0000005 CTD's, and bad pauses (not stuttering) in some areas.

When mine CTD's, I also get the sound issue exactly as described by others.  A complete pause of the sim with no sound, or maybe a bit of a squelch, then the sim comes back for one second, then there I am suddenly back at the desktop.  Not common, but regular enough to be annoying!

In case it helps trace commonality, my soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 5X, in a typical PCI slot - latest drivers.  I have disabled/uninstalled the Nvidia high quality audio in case that was clashing.

As Asobo seem to be having problems reproducing / tracing it, hopefully we can get a handle on this to help them find it.  Other than this 0xc0000005 CTD with the specific way it crashes, I don't have any other type of CTD.  I always check in Windows Event Viewer afterwards.

I honestly do think its some issue in the sim, that only affects  a few systems. Today for example, 3x 1-2 hr flights in the A320nx.. no issues. This evening first flight from Dublin -Leib, all going fine till North western France, then freeze for a sec, sound goes... back to desktop. same error 0xc0000005

did you guys with sound issues disable live atc (either azure or windows offline) to see whether that helps? that possibly helped me for some weeks to fly without CTDs (together with disabling live traffic and multiplayer), skies are not that busy then but it may help to find a culprit.

I don't use ATC at all as i found it totally useless.... for example asking mt to climb to 13k on approach... kills the immersion.

I wonder is everyone else with issues using a AMD based system?

But thanks DAD

I have been using the windows text to speech for some time (Early December), as I had a lag with Azure.  Azure sounds nicer, but the built-in windows voices are instant.

No AMD for me.  Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU.  Asus Maximus motherboard (Hero IX Wi-Fi).

I don't think that it's currently possible to say with any confidence that it is a sound issue. The loss of sound could be cause or effect of the associated momentary stutter.

On my system, this momentary stutter is almost identical to that which I sometimes got in P3DV4 when flying into a area where a high number of AI had just been injected. The pause would last around a second, sound would momentarily drop out or stutter, then bang, back to normal. MSFS seems to replicate the former, but unfortunately, not the latter.

I've only had three or four CTD's over the last year or so and nothing changed except MSFS updates and a couple of sceney/aircraft additions (freeware Frankfurt and ORBX LOWS and A320NX FBW version updates) since I was CTD free.

First 0x0000005 CTD for me. Intermittent very slow loading times when starting sim as well (began yesterday using Western Europe server).

Not much help I know.

Regards

Both of mine are disabled. No help with CTDs

Been using PF3 for ATC, works perfectly with MS 2020.

Thats could be a good question for all people with the CTD

Do you have Rolling Cache ON?

Never used it.

No PG, no cache, no AI, no addons, no Azure, but plenty of CTDs. Ryzen 5800x and 6800 here. I just hope the big update helps, although I have my doubts considering past updates.

My feeling at this point, having come from P3D which crashed about 3 times in several years, is that this sim just looks great, but is not reliable. Thinking about switching back to P3D, I don't think I am willing to do that now, after seeing how great MS 2020 looks. So I have decided that when it CTDs, I am just going to take a break restart the PC, and try again. The 80% of successful flights are worth it, in my opinion. Having worked in the electronics field my entire life, I know the hardest thing to troubleshoot is a failure that  randomly occurs. Might take them a year or more to nail down what is causing this.

We must keep trying to find the common denominator here, or we may never solve it.  I know it is hard.

I have turned off so many suggested features in MSFS, and external programs, simconnect (mapping etc.) or even totally unrelated programs, and it still happens, so I can eliminate plenty, but I can't pinpoint the actual cause, and it is just so random.

If it was someone else,  I would say that it is their PC at fault, but I know mine is running well within capability, voltages and temps are fine, and no RAM issues, but there must be something in common, as so many of us have it.  I used to run it not frame limited (I can get about 43 fps on mine unlocked), and it would get hot and have fans screaming, but it was stable for a few months.
Now locked at 30 fps vsync in the sim, cool and quiet and really smooth, but started getting CTD's and bad pauses after the last update in particular.

Just to mention I use the Saitek panels and throttle quadrant with their latest drivers.  Anyone else?  I am convinced it is some software or driver clash somewhere, or even Windows / Xbox system updates, as it seems our hardware is too diverse to find any commonality in that.  I did have to log in to Xbox for the first time the other day which was strange.  It said something about a log-in failure - never saw that before.

I have carried out all the suggestions from everyone this morning. So far so good, 1 flight in LIMA to EGKK no issues. I'll see how it contimues.
