Update destroyed the sim again

Featured Replies

Hi, its happend the 2nd time: (first time the same happened by the US-World-Update)

Last update today destroyed the install folders. they have changed from L:\to C:\
My MSFS was before on separate SSD
The sim was installed in L:\WindowsApps\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_(version number)....__8wekyb3d8bbwe
now after the last update all files are not on "L:\..."- the Folders are empty,
so all Files i find now in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe

also my community folder which was also on L:\MSFS_Download\Community,
and this folder is now also on C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community.
but the community folder on c:\.. is empty.

The installer/Updater  did not show any Error during update process. i just want to start a flight after the update was finished, the sim crashed.
Now I can not run the Microsoft Flight Simulator App from the windows10 start menu, because ist says "File not found", its pointed to Drive L:\ ...
the ..exe from Flight Simulator i can now find on C:\...
Also the FTX-Central from Orbx sys now "Install Folder MSFSLibrary not found".
My L:\ - SSD did not show any Error, only the "old" MSFS Folders are empty. All Files on C:\ now.

i want to repair the MSFS in Windows10 App-Setings, or MS Store, but it says the sim is installed on L:\ ... the only i can do is to remove the install to an other drive,
or uninstall. a repair is not available.

Never, Never i will Buy an App in the MS-Store again. the MSFS was the last from MS.
i have now again to uninstall the sim complete, so all Folders for the MS are cleared out, and install again on Drive "L:",
maybe it will stay on L:\ then i have time to get the next update...
Microsoft so i say again: "I Will .."words not allowed"..  you"!

I went through this on day 1 of MSFS. Fortunately I was within the money-back term and managed to get it back indeed. Bought the Steam version and am happy since.

A lot of people don't have issues with the MS Store version, but installing on a drive different from C seems to call for trouble. I don't understand why MS still maintains this user-unfriendly setup, as they're clearly loosing money from users switching to Steam.

Kind regards, Michael

I also went through whole process once. You have to be careful when you update and select correct MSFS location. If you don't want any problem with that in the feature update just install the whole MSFS once on C drive by default.

As with others above you have to be careful once past the launching phase of the update if you have your install on a different drive, I made this mistake once, and I now make sure I always select my M.2 drive from now on when doing any further updates.

This sort of thing is why I always leave installs in their default location, don't use mods, and so far at close to 400hours have had a grand total of 2 CTDs early on, one related to the VFR map bug that was solved quickly.   I'm fortunate to have dual 2TB m.2 NVMe sticks.  I really, really appreciate the KISS model.

I have MSFS on an SSD (F drive) and it never seems to have much of a problem with that (MS store Premium Deluxe version).

What was a bit more bizarre yesterday however in terms of installs of flight sims, was the way Aerosoft's new Glider sim installs: You get a serial number on your downloads in the Aerosoft Store when you buy it, then you have to go to Steam, add the serial number, then it downloads and installs via Steam. Not that unusual, in the grand scheme of things and I can understand why they want to go with the exposure that a Steam app affords, but I'm still a bit puzzled as to why they didn't just make their sim a standalone app when you bought it via their store (as it effectively is via Steam, since at that point you are already throwing the money at them so there's really no reason it couldn't just be completely standalone.

Back with MSFS. I do notice with some add-ons that it insists on reporting that it is installing to a Community folder on the C drive, but then ends up putting it in the one on the F drive anyway. seems a bit bizarre, but apparently it works.

Similar here - MS Store Premium Deluxe and I chose my D drive for the install.  I've never had an issue with updates and everything appears to go in the proper place.

Later this year, when I replace the D drive with a new SSD and clone the drive, I hope all goes well...

Same here, installed MS Store version on a separate SSD and never had any issue with the updates...

Hi all, thanks for condolation.
On Updates i look always that the download-Folder ist the right on L:\
i also not need and install any Mods. The only "MOD" i will install is the comming PMDG737.

So i am lucky and have always a backup from the latest "Official\One-Store" folder, i can
make an fast comlete reinstall:

deinstall the full sim
delete all folders from the "old" sim on C:\ which not deleted by the setup.
Format L:\
then Windows restart, begin new install; stop install when download begin.
now write back all 120GB from Backup into my "L:\MSFS_Download\Official\OneStore" folder. then run the installer again.
so the programm see all ist downloaded ready and the install go faster as normal.
when in my backup are old data in, so the installer downloads the newest files during install.
All Settings are the same as before, so it saved in the MS-Cloud.

AND I NEVER NEVER NEVER will install any GAME on C:\
that is an absolute NOGO to install an GAME on a Systemdrive.
So Version 1.16.2.0 run again now. Time for deinstall comlpete and reinstall again on L:\ about 30 Minutes.
30 long minutes, thanks MS. Now i am reinstall my 4 ORBX Scenerys then i am ready again-
until the next broken Update.

Did you have a problem with your MS account? I am having problems such as your's with the last update and I cannot get another download from my store account.  No one answers the phone at support also.

Can you please describe in detail exactly why that is a bad thing, from a practical point of view, versus only theortical.  I ask because I have very smooth performance in MSFS and P3D, vsync to 30Hz, and can't see where things might improve except my GPU isn't where it needs to be.  So again, what do we expect to see improve by installing MSFS on a non-system drive?  I could do that for sure because my second drive I use as a swappable cloned drive should my C:\ drive fail.  It would also be a shame to have the OS only on C:\ which is a 2TB NVMe m.2 drive, and MSFS on its own 2Tb NVM3 m.2 drive.

Offtopic from the sim now, but I want to give you my point of view:
How often you must have done an comlpete window10 reinstall so the system was broken?
i can not enumerate how often Windows crashed in the last 30 Years. All Windows systems are not save from errors.
(Also linux, but its not pointed here)

The ONLY Programs i install on C:\ are SYSTEM, OFFICE, and such programs wich you must install on C:\ so
they will not run outside from c:\
Windows stores ALL installer on C:\ so your drive wil get fuller and fuller. with SSD´s you can run into Problems.
The system itself is also becoming more and more bloated. This is a Windows disease that is a fact.
I also set since 20 Years move my personal Data (Eigene Dateien) on D:\
whenever i must do a reinstall from System all Datas was on save place.
also i run my onwn network drives to have family NAS for Backups and private sensitive data, also for entertainment.

When you think you are save so you make a Backup every week from your system drive,
so you also backup the garbage that accumulates in the system and in the registry of windows..
when you think you are save so you use any windows-cleaner, you also will run once in windows problems.
when you think your backups are save on an secound drive in your computer system, so you are lost.
a really hard system crash can destroy all datas on your secound drive in your system. its always better to have two or more copys from your data on more then one external storages.

that is windows. we all hate it, we all need it.
It your own to make from time to time an windows "Reset" and do a clean install.
when you not do this you will get errors, and an slower system over time. so its the fastest way you have only
what need to install on C:\ the system and also your drive will thank you wich more speed.

You can call me hypereactive about data security, but if you have lost sensitive data because of a windows crash, and you don't want that to happen again, then you have to be careful with windows. That's what I've learned in 30 years of Windows and Microsoft.

Here is one practical reason.  It was quite a few years ago, but I had a game I had installed on my C: drive (possibly Skyrim if I recall correctly) when it completely hung/froze.
I waited minutes, but in the end I had to shut down from the PC hardware button (as even Control-alt-del didn't work).

The PC wouldn't reboot again.  On using a checking CD it said the C: drive was corrupted and it couldn't repair it.

I had to fully install windows again.  It took me a few hours and I lost a few photos I wasn't particularly worried about, but I swore I would never put any games on my C: drive again.

I bought another Hard disk and named it G: (for games).  I also now have F: (for Flight sims) separate.  I suppose if you don't have the income, you can't keep buying hard disks, but that is a separate issue.

Now I know what you might be thinking - it could have been the hard disk that had an issue, not the game.  Well maybe, but that hard disk reinstalled with Windows and MS Office and a few other apps never had that problem again, and was only swapped recently for a new M.2 NVME.

It is simply user choice and maybe down to money, but I will only ever put Windows, MS Office, and a few other well used apps on my C: drive again.
This also helps if you ever do want to reinstall Windows quickly or do a complete C: drive format (luckily a rare thing these days), but I appreciate this whole thing is mainly down to user choice.
