NASA searching for intelligent life out there...

Featured Replies

Given the distances involved I would think that proof of extraterrestrial life elsewhere in the universe could only be determined by intercepting radio transmissions that indicate intelligence.

Has there ever been any evidence that any the UFOs that see to be crowding our skies are communicating with their home planets?  If they can solve the problem of vehicles exceeding or bypassing the speed of light could they also communicate back home by somehow having the transmissions bypass or exceed the speed of light?  Would we be able to intercept those communications?

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Probably not. It could be like trying to receive FM signals on an AM radio.

There is lots of evidence already established that this is happening.

Or... perhaps we're just trying to find it too far away from where it is :-)

In Edgar Allen Poe's 1835 newspaper article "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall" the problem of space flight was resolved. Since the ether was everywhere in space and much like our own atmosphere only very very sparse, Poe relates how Pfaall used a mechanical hand pump to continually compress the either into a life sustaining gas. Much like a modern automobile tire hand pump. The lifting force was of course a balloon filled with gas, to wit:

"I then took opportunities of conveying by night, to a retired situation east of Rotterdam, five iron-bound casks, to contain about fifty gallons each... The gas to be formed from these latter materials is a gas never yet generated by any other person than myself – or at least never applied to any similar purpose.  I can only venture to say here, that it is a constituent of azote, so long considered irreducible, and that its density is about 37.4 times less than that of hydrogen...The same individual submitted to me, without being at all aware of my intentions, a method of constructing balloons from the membrane of a certain animal, through which substance any escape of gas was nearly an impossibility."

The animal membrane supplied the barrier, the azote gas supplied the force, the hand pump a breathable atmosphere, and several furry skins enough warmth. Pfaall filled a large cask with water that drained slowly through a partially corked hole into a crockery pitcher below. Which when filled, ran over and trickled on Pfaall's head while he slept. In this manner he was awakened once an hour to attend to his ether pump.

Not without incident or drama, but the newspaper proclaimed the mission a success and that life forms were discovered on the Earth's satellite!

No one has yet discovered intelligent life on Earth.

Like what evidence?

If some form of superluminal communication was happening it would be beyond our current understanding and thus, undetectable by us.

Yes, but  techno-signatures aren't just communications'. Any technology that modifies its environment would be a viable techno-signature. Signs of mega-structures like ring worlds and Dyson Spheres, excessive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning fossil fuels, methane CFC's and other pollutants, self luminous technologies etc.

No evidence of such a thing but a good question. As far as we know, you cant communicate faster than light. Information is restricted to the speed of light like everything else. If there are alien civilisations doing this then its beyond our current understanding and thus, we wouldn't be able to detect it.

I like the question though, its something that's not explored often.

Every time someone with HD iPhones taking blurry pictures of their friends ‘flying saucer’ (Mom’s kitchen saucer, Dad’s trash bin lid, etc etc), with some clever tricks (fishing line and pulleys), you get all the evidence you need.

Yes, if an alien civilization has somehow managed to bend the law of physics as we know them, then we may all be in deep doo-doo.

If so, lets just hope they are benevolent - and not look upon us as just some insect colony that we ourselves might fumigate...

How would one know what is considered excessive for another planet and how could one assume it's as a result of burning fossil fuels. I'm thinking of a planet like Venus or even Mars.

I admit my imagination is still stuck in the 20th century but I can't imagine anyone taking these concepts seriously. Why would one build a ringworld in the first  place and, if a ringworld is big enough to be detected from here, how could one provide an atmosphere for it in the first place?

The concept of a Dyson Sphere, whether a solid sphere or a spherical array completely surrounding a star, sounds impractical, particularly from a maintainence point of view. Maybe a localised array near the home planet would be more likely.

Huh... what's that got to do with aliens communicating with their home planet for which you claimed there was lots of evidence?
