Different airports in MSFS are amazing.

Featured Replies

Last night I flew the DC6 from ESPA to EFPO in Finland. I landed on Rwy 12 and taxied to the parking area down this narrow taxiway. Looking to the left I saw a tree lined narrow dirt road,  going off into the woods. There were flowering trees mixed in with regular trees courtesy of the four seasons add on. The look of this default airport was excellent. I make it a habit, and have for years flying for my VA, of landing at a different airport about 95% of the time. MSFS 2020 makes this really fun because each airport is so unique.

Yeah, I've landed at insignificant small airports where the default have been payware-quality. Some of them are really, really good. Definitely one of the things that makes MSFS so darned enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing this, I'll check those airports out later this evening Im playing !

Interesting. I almost always feel underwhelmed and I wonder what this airport really looks like as I taxi by a couple of generic buildings that most certainly are not representative of the real ones (based on small airports I've actually been to in real life).

Well flying into different airports all over the world, probably about 99.9999 percent, I have never been to or will never  manage to  see in person either.

Interesting take. I find the default non-hand crafted airports to look pretty bad. Those hangars that are three times the size they should be and the lack of ramp lighting are something that should hopefully be fixed soon. The hand-crafted ones are very good.  Surprisingly good.

And Asobo has given those no love since MSFS first released.  Check out the default KESN, Easton, Maryland, USA,  and KCTJ, Carrollton, Georgia, USA, as examples.  Flat globs of color on the ground where hangars and buildings should be.  Stark and desolate.  There are several others that I have landed at but I have not built a list.

It is quite rare to find an airfield without a building in MSF. I fly a lot in the boonies, they may not always be realistic but there are here at least. A nice change over its predecessors.

And when there is none, it happened to me recently in the high plateaus of the Andes I had a bus waiting to drive me to town. Quaint .

Well let's see, there are , if I remember right, around  38,000 airports in MSFS 2020. If they did one airport a day, which would be a good feat, it would take only about 100 years to do them all.

I have been pleasantly surprised by a few autogen airports, but a very small fraction. Most are exactly what I expect - pretty terrible. A few are flat out 'what the hell happened here?'

Some minor tweaks to their techniques would make a difference. Lowering the ridiculously lofty hangars is the main one.

I presume they use a different system for terminals as some of the autogen ones are pretty damned good. In a few cases with freeware I wish they'd kept the original.

LOL ROFL LMAO!
So then how many 100 years have they already put in doing the vast majority of those already?

You should know, you seem to be well informed.

Frank - Happy to hear there is finally an update for KESN!  If I had the talent, I would have built one for you many months ago😄  I flew into KESN many times IRL in the mid-late 90's.....back when you could still get a $100 hamburger.

I agree that some of the FS2020 airports are a real treat.  When I flew into Paro the first time I was trying to survive one of the world's most difficult approaches.  However, I wasn't expecting this when I taxied up to the ramp...

Angus burger still only $10.99 at Sugarbuns, which continues to operate quite successfully in the primary ops facility.  I personally go for the "market price" Maryland style crabcake sandwich!

Have you acquired and visited the addon KESN for MSFS? He did a very nice job.   I am inquiring of another scenery author to see if he would handcraft the distinctive primary ops facility and provide it to the KESN addon author, who by skillset was limited to use of stock MSFS scenery objects. That author/developer just made available an incredibly great Hilton Head, SC, airport (KHXD) that includes a great deal of great handcrafted objects!.
