Is There a Cure for Light Contrast Like This

Featured Replies

As others have mentioned its essential that these options are given on-off switches or sliders in the menu. This would give the best of both worlds. For example perhaps a gamer likes film grain but not at a strong level so they can set it at 1/5 whereas someone else might really like it and set it at 5/5

Same for sharpening etc. I know this sort of this is not even on the radar of Asobo as they have understandably more pressing things to deal with. Im just glad we have access to that .cfg to turn them off!

For those who are saying the changes they make to their UserConfig.cfg are not "sticking": After you save any edits to the file, you need to right click it and select "Read Only." That way those changes aren't "reset" every time you close and reopen the sim. I got rid of the film grain effect and overdone sharpening - I would advise getting rid of those effects, too. If you so desire, you can re-enable sharpening via the Nvidia control panel. My personal setting is 0.02 to 0.05.

OK thanks I will try this to stop it resetting.  Good suggestion.  As for me this "fix" was not working.

Interesting this is my first venture into the config file, I will check out your suggestions.

For those with the "self-resetting" problem, make sure you edit the first occurrence of "EyeAdaptation" (in the "{Graphics" section). The entry is repeated below for VR and that is the one which keeps resetting. However, even if I make the edit "stick", I still see the adaptation effect in the sim... Weird...

I set the one you mentioned this morning, and it reset by this afternoon. The heck with it....

The setting resets even if the file is set to read-only? word not allowed Asobo really needs to add these into the options menu for us.

Looks like we're being given gentle hints not to fiddle with stuff, I guess... 😉 Let's hope we get this as an UI option at some point...

Strange!  I turned mine off and didn't like it (contrast looked too flat), but now I can't get it back on!    Crazy!  I swear sometimes, MSFS is playing with our heads.

Reminds me what I went through with a Railroad Sim on Steam. There would be a bug in the sim, we would edit a file to fix it, and the next day Steam would put the bug back. 🤬

Any of these config options will reset to default the next time you start if you change any setting with the in game menu.

If you just fly, and never hit ESC in game to fiddle with the settings,  the option should stick.

Yes that does happen but mine has stuck for the last six months and I’ve been in and out of esc settings dozens of times.

Strange - That does look like the correct path to the file.

It works perfectly for me, so not sure why it isn't adjusting on yours.  I get no contrast change now when looking at the panel then looking up out of the window.

There are two instances of the setting in the user config file (one is for VR but may not be obvious).  It is best to change them both to zero just in case.

PS.  I wonder if there is some interaction going on here with the HDR setting.  It might be worth setting that to zero also.  I am not HDR capable, so I wouldn't see that.

Thank you bobcat. I was indeed adjusting eye adaption in the VR section of the file.

I have now set the correct section to “0” but alas it still makes no difference. Still a strong brightness/contrast shift depending on how much panel fills the forward view. I am not running HDR, but have tried both. In fact it is the eye adaption that stops me from running HDR. Looking outside with HDR on and no panel in view is quite good. However any introduction of panel into the view blows clouds out to no definition at all.

I would just be over the moon if I could get rid of eye adaption in standard mode. I find the effect at its worst in the PMDG DC6 which I tend to fly frequently. I live in hope that one day this will be addressed.
