Piper Tomahawk..?

Featured Replies

Anyone know of one in development for FS2020?  I miss it, having spent more hours in Alabeo's Tomahawk than any other aircraft I used in X-Plane.  I flew the Tomahawk a lot in the 1990s during real-world flight training, and well remember how scary it could be when stalled or during spin-recovery.  My instructor was young and a bit of a maverick, and took delight in what I considered back then as 'stunt' flying.  Dropping like this to land on an imaginary short field he considered an essential skill to master, and you can be sure I mastered it only after many heart-in-the-mouth attempts!

Something else I miss:  The 'headshaker' plug-in.  I know Asobo have included something similar in 'settings', but it allows movement that is too abrupt & not fluid enough.  Moreover, it really needs a slider adjustment to modulate its effect.  Watch a little more of the 'The Flying Brick' video above and you'll see how much the Tomahawk could rock-and-roll on a blustery day.  Often, on final approach in the real world, you'd need to wrestle with the yoke just to stay on the centre-line.  As it stands, FS2020 doesn't model this as well as X-plane did IMHO ~ neither does it model the airframe 'shaking' enough during start-up, during a take-off roll or after touchdown (..esp. on grass or water).  Note here how the Tomahawk sways and yaws using 'headshaker', and the whiplash effect of a deliberate hard landing:

You are a brave person to have flown the Tomahawk. I knew two CFIs in Florida that said it was an accident going someplace to happen.

If you search the forums you will find the main complaint seems to be turbulence and shaking in light aircraft is overdone and needs to be toned done.

Clearly most of the people posting have never flown in anything but a large airliner and are just plain wrong -  but sadly MS tend to try and cater to mass opinion rather than realism in most cases.

I had a discovery flight in a Tomahawk a few year ago, it seemed ok apart from being a bit of a bone shaker at times.

Justflight did one for fSX along with the Warrior and Arrow so I expect they will release a Tommy for FS2020 considering they've released the Arrow and Warrior.

In the meantime, you might want to fly the Seminole (a twin version) by Carenado.  Nice aircraft to take places..

Or, if you like a light trainer.. why not spend time in the C152 😉

It's too abrupt in FS2020 IMHO.  One moment the aircraft is floating serenely in still air, and the next it's jerked to one side, up or down before settling again as if by magic.  In reality, on a blustery day the air is rarely still; it moves a Tomahawk around the whole time.  That Bandicam video I linked above accurately replicates what I experienced many times, ie. the aircraft rising/falling, swaying & yawing in a very 'fluid' motion.  Not jerking, simply rocking & rolling.  Truly, the yoke was rarely centered.  Often, I'd come in deliberately high and/or fast, simply to allow myself a margin for any sudden windshear as I neared touchdown.

But yes, the Tomahawk, though easy to fly, could be a worry.  Pulling it out of a spin-induced dive took (takes) an immense tug on the yoke; and it's then that the tiny nipples on the ends of the aileron/elevator control cables you almost overlooked during pre-flight inspection were suddenly uppermost in your mind.  A sim. pilot wouldn't give this kind of thing a moment's thought, I know, but even to this day I'm aware I owe those tiny gubbins my life.  (..anyone who's had what looks like a perfectly useable clutch cable snap on a motorbike will understand!!)

Just Flight have already mentioned they will be bringing their Tomahawk to MSFS2020.

Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.

My first flight instructor wouldn't do full stalls in the this aircraft. She pushed me towards the Warrior straight away. (was only $12 more per hour back then) I took her word for it. Must be gnarly in a stall.

CFI good friend of mine said it was the only plane he flew, that every time it stalled, it did something different.

Yes, I was using the 152 until I bought Just Flight's Warrior.  I've never switched 'planes since, because I like to feel at home in one and become fully familiar with it.  Swapping around only confuses me.  Added to which, the real-life Warrior is the aircraft I hired first (..and last of all) after I gained my PPL.  It's been some years since I flew for real though, so I'm having to reacclimatise.  If they do introduce a Tomahawk to FS2020, I'll be rolling back thirty years (..give or take) when I 'fly' it.

I hadn't heard that.  I'll keep an eye open for it.  Thanks for the info!

Howdy Stealthy, your story is my story. Started training in Grumman Tigers and Cheetahs in 1977.  After PPL tried Cessna’s (cheaper) didn’t like em and settled on Warriors where I spent the majority of my flight time long ago.  I even have 15 or so hours in a Hershey Bar.
Stopped flying late eighties and have no real time since then except for 3.5 hours  PIC in two T-38 incentive rides I earned in my time in USAF. Thousands of hours in the sim though and just like you I have the Just Flight Warrior.  Amazing technology we have nowadays.

Best,

Read the comments on this video from Just Flight. First thing I asked was about the Tomahawk and Hawk…
