Tonight I’ve been trying out FS on my LG OLED for the first time, it’s blown me away - an absolutely total game changer using HDR on it.

Take your iPhone/Android, take a high res photo of it, and post here what is blowing you away!  Can't wait!  Not sure what that kind of claim means because try that same test around KSLC--it's really fugly!

Did a night flight along the Florida Keys to Key West.    Omg,  the stars on an oled were stunning.  They are even in the correct location for time/date.  I was spotting constellations.

What games? Yes there is a difference between HDR 400 and HDR 1000, but HDR 400 will still look much better than just SDR.

Battlefield 1 and V, Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

If I enable it in Windows, also desktop colors look dull and washed out.

HDR just looks bad on my monitor (Samsung C27HG70), worse than SDR.

I would have given HDR on my HDR400 monitor a score around 6 as at 2 months back but post SU5 I now rate it around 9.5 .

Something changed recently.

No matter what anyone wants to tell me, the visuals for my setup have been significantly negatively affected since SU5.

I have tried all the workarounds and settings but the shimmering I get on trees is horrible and everything is still washed out, overly bright and cartoon looking. The shimmering trees when the sun light reflects off them is driving me nuts like the aliaising is all messed up or broken. The clouds have definitely lost detail and quality and in many cases look like cotton blobs or an oil painting especially when up close. If everyone else thinks SU5 is so amazing something on my system must be off because I can tell you I am not that fussy or pedantic about things like that.

Perhaps somehow this is my screen or setup affecting things but I get the impression from the feedback here that playing on an SDR big screen (55 inch) in 4K is making this more noticeable when compared to those using a HDR screen since the update.

I have spent hours trying to get it to resemble what it did before and whilst in certain weather and lighting conditions it still can look good, it is a far cry from what it looked like before SU5.

I am happy for everyone on here who thinks it's the next best thing since sliced bread but for me no matter what I change or do in my settings, it still looks rather bad comparitively.

I know from the official forums others are having similar issues and that's why I think there's got to be something else going on system wise that's affecting some users such as myself.

This happens to everyone. It won't affect the way HDR content is displayed.

For best results with HDR, an HDR1000 monitor (or TV) is required - at least in my experience.

It seems more a vote on how well your screen is set up and the quality of it.

HDR600 score 5-6

SDR 9-10 sRGB, 10bit

I also run a LG OLED with HDR and it really looks phantastic. 🙂

I think you're right, and also points to the idea it's not quite so clear that one is definitively superior to the other, which has some value to know as well ;o)  I think it's becoming clear OLED is a good thing!  My next screen will be an ultra wide format OLED of desktop size, around 34"!  Could be a few years which is fine my Dell U3415W is pretty good for now.

Part of the issue is some of the people assessing HDR may have badly set up screens or potentially not even enabled HDR in Windows.

But there is also a subjective component. A good friend of my daughters absolutely swears he can see no difference between a 1080p TV and a 4K TV and claims we are all being conned by swarmy advertising and there is zero point paying extra money for 4K.  So maybe Derrida was right and it is all in the eye of the beholder.

Actually it appears a decent comprise today is a VA panel equipped monitor which I read offers significantly superior blacks and contrast to IPS, though slightly higher response time and lower viewing angle, neither of which matter for flight simulation.  Samsung is coming out w/ their Micro LED screen TVs, but no PC monitors, and they will be expensive city.  If I had to buy a screen today it would be a curved VA panel screen ~34" in width, 4K would be fine.  Fortunately I don't need a screen so hopefully can hang in thier until Micro LED arrives for PC screens.  They offer the same contrast and pure blacks as OLED w/o the burn-in and degredation risk.

Quite simply the vast majority still don't know what to expect of HDR and how it supposed to look. One must fully understand the fundamentals of the tech and must have a PROPER setup to experience it on, once those are fulfilled, it will no longer be a question at all. Yes you will see once you've experienced it properly. A large OLED is a very good starting point.
