MSFS Addons Linker - organization idea tips

Well you're not taking chances at all hehe...that's why it's in the community folder.  It won't wreck your install or anything.  If you use the Addon Linker you can easily identity which addon may be causing a problem.

I split my aircraft into two folders, one folder for actual addons (payware and freeware both)  and the second folder for mods to the default aircaft.

I divide my aircrafts into categories. Like GA, Jets, Commercial, Bush, Other, etc. and then Avionics for working title mods and pms gtn 750 and so on.

I went through all my mods, and anything that had not been updated to Su5 I deleted.

Anything that has been updated, I added the suffix Su5 to the name.

Should some of the Deleted things be eventually updated, I will add them back.

In the meanwhile, I just really didn't see any reason to keep things around that I wasn't going to use.

A few of the top level folders seem to be redundant (such as those for default aircraft, which are empty*) but other than that it works for me.

* I created them before I realised I seemingly couldn't control default aircraft from Add-ons linker.

Nice, your list is very detailed compared to mine. It's interesting to see all the different ways that each and every one of you are using this addon to keep things well organized.

Have you guys used the dependecy feature yet? It's awesome. Especially works well if some of your mod requires external libraries, etc. The way it works is if you activate an addon that requires an external mod or library to work with, it will automatically enable/disable them when needed.

My next step is to create and make some nice presets for the type of activity that I do. Such as GA VFR flying, Sailing, Plane Spotting, Carrier Ops, Military Ops, Hawaiian GA VFR, etc.

It's a testament to what an amazing piece of software the addon linker is that we can organise all of our mods, even 3rd party purchases, in any order and file structure we choose.

The fact it's constantly updated to be made even more user friendly as time goes on is the icing on the cake.

I can't imagine what my MSFS experience would have been like without it over the last year. But it would definitely have been immensely poorer.

Never use this, but curious now, what exactly does it do? Is it a spreadsheet to keep track of your add-ons?

No, it actually allows you to move them to any location you want...

For example, if you drop everything in the Community folder it can get really full of ...all sorts of things.  The Addon Linker allows you to move your install to somewhere logical to you, like an "Aircraft" folder, for example.

This is important also -- a full Community folder means a longer loading sim, I think...

If that's true then your sim will load faster with the linker going.  Someone can confirm that but I'm pretty sure that's true.

And then the sim reads the created folder of my choice, at any location on my Hardrive that I choose as if it was in the community folder? So using this I will have nothing in my community folder, even though the read me of a mod says to install in the community folder?

yes

Yes.  To my understanding Addon Linker puts a "symbolic link" in the Community folder.  The add-on thinks it's still installed there.  A "symbolic link" is a file-system item that's been around since ... I think NTFS started back in the mid-90's.   NTFS was the "Windows NT File System" which came about with Windows NT in about 1995.  It was a better file system than FAT and that's why it caught on I suppose.  That's probably TMI -- Too Much Information  😜

Anyway I haven't found an add-on that didn't work just fine doing this.

To me the main advantage would be sim loading times, where I can disable every add-on that I didn't need.  For example if I'm flying in the USA I can disable any Europe scenery etc. so the sim wouldn't process it for that session.

It acts pretty much the same as Orbx central, creating virtual-symlink folders in your community folder, which your computer treats as if they are actual folders at that location, even though the real folders are elsewhere.

Addon-linker can then add and remove those links in whole or in part, at will.
