I let one in the other day as I wasn't too busy. When I asked him what he wanted to talk about, he said he didn't know, as he had never gotten this far before!.. 😀 As for flightsim.to, access has been quite erratic and troublesome for some time for me. I think with the bandwidth usage (as pointed out earlier with global shipping traffic etc.) it is quite obvious they will need some kind of financial support for the longer term. The MSFS third party market (payware and freeware) has grow bigger that any of us would have imagined in this short space of time. They have done a marvellous job to keeping it going up to now. On another point, does anybody else get the single grey blank box in the listings on each page? I wonder what is going on there? I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio. Most likely you're using an ad blocker of sorts? There's an ad in each section. The search on Avsim for example has been hit and miss for a long time. It's also a bit of a pain to upload items as well. Cant argue with the massive amount of FS files this site and flightsim.com have. I remember the fun days uploading my wingviews back in the day. But as you said it is hit and miss and the GUI feels like its 1992. Yes the underlying data is what matters but a visually appealing and modern UI makes a big difference. 21 hours ago, Ixoye said: I take the opportunity to visit when the Americans are asleep. then there is no queuing. October 18, 20214 yr @ThrottleUp It's not just the appearance of the UI/GUI, it's the actual functionality of the file library. Avsim can't handle multiple versions of a file in a single listing (and therefore doesn't notify downloaders of updates), doesn't support user reviews, there's no categories or tags for specific aircraft or countries. Whereas FllightSim.To even has a indicator of what SU/WU a file is compatible with. @Dillon They have found nicer homes. Avsim and FlightSim.com have a large collection of files for sims that are rapidly becoming "legacy", and their file libraries will similarly become a legacy feature rather than a current draw for audiences. Its very old skool style. Those features you mentioned along with a UI refresh would definitely drive more users to the site. The last time I was on there was in 2009.
October 18, 20214 yr The Avsim library for better or worse is a repository for yesteryear and the ESP simulators of FS9, FSX and P3D. Avsim is really really good for just one thing, the forums and the exchange of information in them. Eric
October 18, 20214 yr The recent lunacy that is the 8k texture craze doesn't help one bit. It offers very little visual benefit in the sim, it offers a potential performance loss in sim, and just eats up bandwidth. It's all about vanity, imo. Personally, I do not download 8k liveries. Around a month or so ago, a single painter posted an 8k livery with "8K" proudly in the screenshot and description. Since then, half the painters fell and bumped their heads. They're all trying to be "8K" because it's the latest draw. Asobo is trying to optimize the experience, and they're trying to eat up whatever memory gains Asobo found with textures that are 4 times the file size for a single livery. 4k liveries make sense, but 8k.. isht. Just my opinion. Not sure how Flightsim.to cornered the market since the release of FS2020 but we've never had these kinds of issues in the 20+ years of use on our legacy sites. Our third party community needs to come back home. AVsim have received quite a lot of donations over the years. Still they are not able to host a screenshot I take that is a few kilobytes. What makes you think they can handle the Terrabytes of data needed to host a site like flightsim.to? // 5800X3D // RTX 3090 // 64GB RAM // HP REVERB G2 //
