Up to date on the default aircraft

I rarely fly any of the default planes anymore, I was just wondering which ones have gotten better and are now flyable, and which ones haven't.

I watched the MSFS flight lesson the other night on Twitter, and they were flying the G1000 NXi modified C-172 from Paine Field KPAE.

Later after updating the scenery I tried the flight on my own. Made me wonder about some of the other planes I never fly...

The Rob Young modified Turbo Bonanza is perfect with the G1000NXi.. my favorite plane.. but the TBM930 is fine too... take your pick.

Most of the default flight models are what I consider "average"... they fly decently well as long as you don't pay too much attention to the performance numbers (which is actually a big improvement over the defaults in previous FS versions).

The Aircraft that I consider "good" usually require a mod:

  • Citation CJ4 (with WT mod)
  • Citation Longitude (with dakfly0219 mod)
  • Bonanza G36 (either Rob Young's or G36 Mod Team)
  • Airbus A320 (FlyByWire version, of course)
  • Daher TBM 930 (Mugz mod)
  • Diamond DA62 (mrtommymxr mod)
  • Cessna 152 (N95JPL/Oliver Pope version)

In addition, the Cessna 172 and Pipestral Virus are pretty good without any mods required.

The default aircraft I consider "bad":

  • Aviat Pitts Special (absolutely horrendous ground handling)
  • Diamond DA40 TDI (the deluxe, un-modded version)
  • Diamond DV20 (last I checked, doesn't even have instrument lighting)
  • Flight Design CTSL (probably the worst flight model in the sim)
  • Robin DR400 Cadet (about as bad as the CTSL, avoid full flaps unless you're prepared to drop like a man-hole cover)

That's my 2 cents....

I would add:

- Savage Cub (Gotgravel Carbon mod)

Version 4 updated to SU6 and now with more refined rudder, spin, sideslip, lighting, differential brake control, improved ground handling and a host of other tweaks is being tested now and I estimate a weekend release. No need for any trouble shooting or file shifting - it will all be packaged ready to go. Many thanks to Bert for finding the culprit that stopped registration numbers showing (this now also fixed in Version 4). Stay tuned !

Many thanks Rob that's fantastic news, the Bonanza (with your mod) is my go to GA aircraft.

I totally agree with GAJ52 above

Many thanks Robert. Good to "see" you around. Looking forward to version 4 of my favourite aircraft : Turbo Bonanza!

Great news Rob, but can we now just down load and use lieverys in the community folder?

Not sure about this David. If others have enabled extra liveries in the community folder and made them work with an existing mod with its own liveries I have not educated myself how to do it.

EDIT: You can add any livery by opening up an aircraft's aircraft.cfg file then entering a new entry in the list, using all the correct entries and then updating the layout.json file but I don't know another way.

Hi Rob,

This mod I am using as I can use any liverys that i just down load and place in my community folder. https://flightsim.to/file/21221/bonanza-g36-improvement-project

I was hoping unlike your mod on release when it only worked with the liverys within yours.

Hoping thats changed?

That's my 2 cents....

the pitts flight_model.cfg file is:

station_load.0 = 150, -4, 0, 1, TT:MENU.PAYLOAD.PILOT, 1

I changed that during the first week I had MSFS to improve Pitts ground handling. When I want to do this, I add 2 to the 2nd number after the weight number (150 pounds) to scoot every station load forward. Thus increasing the force of the plane's motion wanting to stay in a straight line. Much like adding a point on front of an arrow makes it fly straighter. But it also increases fuel consumption which discourages usage in real life.

station_load.0 = 150, -4, 2, 1, TT:MENU.PAYLOAD.PILOT, 1

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.
