MSFS GOTY Edition + Reno Air Races Review

It looks like Nascar in the Air, and just as boring to me, is it just about roundabouts?

Never had any respect for Nascar until I drove Daytona at 180 for 45 minutes mostly in clean air.  Couldn't imagine it at 200+ for hours on end with cars inches apart.  Pretty cool they've been wearing the heart rate telemetry lately and they are pushing every bit of 180bpm.  Plus they are expanding into road courses and even dare I say rain tires LOL...

I can definitely understand the boredom of watching them go round and round but to try to do it is another story entirely.  The level of concentration is immense...  Especially as the road grooves and wind has as much control over the car as you do....  I'd imagine to go fast in the air races takes a lot of stick and rudder skill as well...

I means you can move you head (like using track ir) and the HUD stays in place.

But I have it this way, right now, with F15, F14 with TrackIR

Abrupt Weather changes?  I'll just check I not reading a REX thread - no, I'm reading about MSFS weather having abrupt changes!

As the reviewer says, I hope this is an oversight or bug that will be fixed!

If there are abrupt weather transitions I might blow a gasket. That's one thing I don't think I can ever deal with again. I really hope they didn't cave to those who were loudly complaining that the weather at their departure/destination didn't conform 100% to the published METAR. Oh man this makes me nervous.

I agree! Really hope this isn’t the case.

You must have a special version that the rest of us don’t have access to then.

As Jorg says in the interview the SDK is updated with capabilities to have user created races. Within weeks there will be more races than you can ever complete.

That is really great news and I had expressed my concerns in my feedback from being a beta tester for the air racing add on.  As is, its a one-trick pony and for it to have any reasonable future would need to support user-defined courses as well as racing seasons and even race types (closed course vs. cross country).  There have been some reasonably successful (and extremely fun and exciting) organized online air racing groups in the past, most notably PROPS Air Racing at WestCoastATC in the FS9 days, and a healthy mix of venues and formats is what makes it addicting.  And it seemed weird that Reno wouldn't be extensible, as allowing user provided content is what has always been a strength of the MFS franchise. Very jazzed to hear this!

The reviewer uses some language like ‘blends’ and ‘at times’ which suggests it’s not jarring all the time, but I guess we have to accept this is an unavoidable step of having both metars and plausible global weather. I’m sure it can be smoothed further but I’m also sure it’s neither a bug nor an oversight, unfortunately.

It's not. From my experience (I'm the reviewer) it's jarring only with heavy fog, and not always. I think it can be improved quite a lot, but it's already a massive improvement over what we have.

I'd be very surprised if the transition from fog to no fog couldn't be made more gradual like it dissolved naturally.

It’s also worth mentioning that this has nothing to with what I’ve seen in add-ons that have big ugly transitions in the cloud layers and such. I’ve experienced it only with the fog (and only from within, not when you’re flying over it for instance), not with other elements of weather like clouds.

Good to hear. Actually to confirm, what you’re talking about is true fog, not simply low cloud? I’m not sure I’ve seen any real fog yet but I keep hearing people talk about it.

I couldn't care less for the races and most of the new planes, but can't wait for the new weather system and the Porter.

If it’s limited to the fog and still subject to improvement that may not be the end of the world.  There are times in the real world where entering and exiting a fog bank can be very sudden…I happen to live in an often foggy coastal city.  Guess we’ll find out Friday though!

It definitely looks like real fog to me. How would you define the difference? It can definitely reduce visibility all the way to 0 (of course, there is a lot of variance).

You know, I honestly haven't thought about this 🤔 But I don't think that's all there's to it, because when it happens (again, it doesn't always happen) and you look back, the fog isn't there.

Just at motorway speeds in the UK, I have been in and out of thick fog banks in a matter of seconds (can be quite scary!) so hopefully it is something like this, or at least we can imagine it might be a real effect.

Thanks for the great reviews and interview.  Lots of good information in there!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

That sounds like fog! All I’ve seen so far when I get above the layer is lots of clouds at ground level, meaning you can see the bumps of individual clouds rather than a flat, consistent level of water vapour. Guess I just need to keep looking.
