Reno races

It’s actually really really good. Sure, it’s a game. But a really good one. Great way to unwind, and it looks fantastic. I’m not getting hung up on the realness of it, is there rpm too high, no oil warm etc etc…. I just take it as it is, a great bit of fun 🙂

I was actually surprised how much concentration it takes to do all the laps (finding clean air outside the wake turbulence and ground effect makes it even more fun)...definitely not easy and pretty cutthroat if you've got a close field!

After being involved in the quick beta period for it, my curiosity got the better if me and I bought it even though I had concerns.  The diehard air racer in me got the upper hand.  And im glad to see it is a fair amount more polished than the last time I saw it.  It remains to be seen how expandable it may be, word was that the SDK would go into detail on making new courses but I didnt see anything about that after downloading the latest SDK and having a quick look.

I've done just one race in the T6 so far but had a blast. Only thing is -- I'm sloooow! Any tips on the best line to take through the corners?

What corners?  The track is mostly oval.  Stay close to the pylons, don't crack the 250 ft ceiling and don't hit any other planes or the ground.  Use a ghost to get familiar with watching for traffic. What is your T-6 rank?

does anyone know if you buy the basic pack now ($19) if you upgrade later to the full pack do you

get the money back?

I wouldn't think so. You might be able to get a refund if you changed your mind right away.

If I purchase only the P51, L39 and T6, do I have access to the flight_model and engines files?

I am trying to understand the difference between the base pack and the $59. Is it just bunch of additional liveries or the planes are different? (Faster, etc.?)

All the planes are different and close to their real world models. I was surprised that you get 44 planes in the $60 pack - the 40 planes + the 4 planes in the $20 pack! Cool.

Multiplayer races = Plane doesn't matter. They are all the same.

Time Trial = Planes matter. All the planes perform similar to their real life counterpart.

I love the T6 class, the races are far and away the tightest.  At least thats the way it was in the beta and the 2 races I ran last night (won both, 2 for 2, woohoo).  But my first race I only won because the other competitors were making mistakes and they were gaining on me until they got tangled up with each other, then would fall back several seconds.

I was losing at least half a second per lap because my throttle quadrant was not giving full throw so I was only getting 97 or 98 percent throttle.  The fix was to go into the sensitivity settings and set up a small Extremity Null Zone for the throttle axis such that the indicator gets all the way to the bottom (or top depending on your axis orientation) as the throw moves to the extreme of its limit.

And before anyone gets riled up, im not divulging any top secret air racer secrets here.  I just appreciate fair competition.  There are other things speed secrets to discover, as evidenced by the one guy who had the #1 single lap time that was about a full second or more faster than anyone else worldwide.  I foresee much testing and practice ahead...

I was wondering the same…I seemingly am flying clean laps, flying level to avoid bleeding airspeed by climbing, cutting the corners close to the pylons, yet I’m usually a couple minutes off the total race time from the top on the leaderboards.  I’m just not sure what other tips might exist to shave off seconds per lap like I would in simracing.

Not that I'm a pro but I'd suggest you use a little bit, but not too much, rudder in the turns close to the pylon to keep the airframe lined up with the airstream (no slipping or skidding with airflow hitting the sides of the fuselage or tail - you want a nicely coordinated turn).  Don't pull more G than necessary since that also bleeds off speed.  Plan your turns so you come close to the pylon but don't focus on coming any closer than necessary.  At the same time, you don't want to fly a completely circular course arcing between pylons, a straight line to the next pylon is best since that's the shorter distance and you are shortening the course.  There's a happy medium.  Depending on the plane, it might be that leaning the mixture for max power, or slightly coarsening the prop pitch in the straightaways could grab you a little more speed, but you may have to go back to full fine pitch to accelerate out of turns, the jury's still out on that.  Above all, relax your shoulders and grip, stay loose and HAVE FUN.

Thanks!  I think I need to stop thinking of this in terms of car sim racing...case in point your comment about not trying to fly a circular course.  My first thought was to go wide then cut the apex of the turn like a meandering best line would be on a race track, but of course the physics involved here are totally different...time to experiment and yes, as you say, have some fun!
