Thanks for your thoughts........ I have tried X-plane  (9 or 10 I think was the last one I had loaded) I am rather curious about this MSFS now though. This is all very revealing, hearing directly from current users.

Thanks again.

MSFS is really superb.  A few niggles with the latest update but it is stunning.  XPlane 12 is just around the corner with major updates so wait for that if you will try XPlane.

When I read your posting I think you need to receive some warnings.

MSFS is not working like you are used to. You don't have disks, and the installation is completely different. I'd predict that you will find it uncomfortably. You should only consider switching if you (1) have a modern computer, (2) have a modern internet connection. To try out, you should go with the game pass and the basic version. This will allow you to judge if this sim is working for you.

I have a Core I7 at 4GHz and a Geforce 1080, plus a 50MBit net. It took hours to download and install the sim. But, in the end, it worked. Now, there are updates approximately every month with another 10GB of download.

You should prepare yourself for a bit of Youtube watching to learn how to configure MSFS for your controls, but that should be manageable. And if you never used Windows 10, you need to get in friend with that OS first.

MSFS is a progress in almost any way to any previous sim. The alternatives? P3D has some study level planes which are not there in MSFS yet. Otherwise, it is behind a lot. I really cannot stand its default graphics anymore. X-Plane is ahead in flight physics, although MSFS is catching up very fast (some refuse to realize that). XP has a more crispy and less eye catching graphics. With Ortho4XP and X-Europe it does not look that much worse than MSFS. I enjoy its nice planes like the Toils or FlightFactor Airbusses, the Zibo 737, and many others. Those are simply not in sight in MSFS yet, nor are helicopters. Still, I believe that MSFS is the future.

So far my ten cent.

I'm most grateful for your insight regarding the new MSFS, it appears I have some studying to do should I decide to take the plunge - I am rather tempted!  🙂

Many thanks for your response.

Hello again,

Sincere thanks to all that shared their thoughts and expertise, I am most grateful; the many and varied responses were both interesting and very informative, I'd go as far to say an education 🙂

Thank you All.

Basically I've stayed with FS9 because there seemed to be too much tweeking and changing with the later MS offerings, albeit I could see the benefit of some of the advances but for the most part I wanted to fly the Sim, not fiddle with the program.

My FS9 to be fair is heavily modified with add-on content but all of the mods were relatively straightforward and produced what they said they would. My Simming was often re-creating previous flights I had made or other projects were re-creating some of the 'Operations' my father had flown in WWII. A real eye opener and education to what we owe to that generation!

I also used the FS9 Sim for other flying projects such as circumnavigating Australia (Voz scenery) etc. Again FS9 was a very useful tool.

Kind Regards,

Blue

For the record FS9 was my main sim before FS2020 for the same reason.  You're reasoning even more so exemplifies the fact in my eyes why you should hold off now.  SU7 broke some fundamental elements of the sim (weather and ATC), core things you need for a great simulator.  The haze is horrible and ATC now gives feedback on takeoff and cleared approach with guck like, '4817 &#*#Microsoft&**&, cleared for Lima approach'.   I don't know what the heck it's saying now outside 'Microsoft' inserted in the middle of the clearance.  This sim will frustrate you more than anything now coming from a stable FS9 platform.  SU5 was bad and they hotfixed it.  SU6 was o.k. but had you having to restart the sim at times as third party airports wouldn't load up at various time (along with a few other issues).  Now they've broken ATC and Weather engine in the sim.  Each SimUpdate is a hold your breath session to see what they broke this time and it looks to be that way moving into the future.  It's not a tweak fest like FSX but it's a frustrating experience just the same only this time you're stuck.  As soon as the community figures out a fix Asobo breaks something else in the next update.  Some of our talented modders look to have given up.  I still don't see an update to the wonderful TBM mod we used to have. Things are a show stopper now and I'm sure it will be resolved with the next hotfix or Sim Update in January 2022.

My thanks Dillon for your candid response. The concerns you have re-emphasise my reluctance to 'Upgrade'. 'Tis true I did eventually move on/up to try out FSX and later P3D (along with X-plane, IL2 DCS etc.) but found myself reverting to FS9 when I had a new project to fly; Fly being the operative word.  Fiddling around with the software/settings etc.etc. can be entertaining BUT - I have Flying projects to entertain me and the projects are the things I really would like to concentrate on. The Simulated Flying is the tool.

As said, I have tried the other Sims. in an attempt to find something useful like FS9 and who knows, maybe, just maybe, MSFS this time, will be the Go-To Sim of the future - let's hope so as clearly plenty of enthusiasts are rooting for it's success. (Including me:-)  )  Thanks again for taking the trouble to share your experiences.

Kind Regards,

Blue

I know a couple of people that are still on Windows XP...😉

Once you fly MSFS, you will never go back to anything else.

Not much else to add here.  But, if you decide to stick with FS9,  my 4670K/1080 rig might be more backward compatible and I'm certainly willing to make a trade. 😁

IMHO, the negatives are being hyped here... there is a glass half full view of the world, as well as a glass half empty view.

I fly with 8-10 Avsim friends several times a week, and we have progressed from FS9 to FSX to P3D, and now to MSFS.

Not a single one of our group is going back.. in spite of Dillon's tale of doom..

There is lots of help to be found here, should you need it. 😉

Thing is a 4670K/1080 is perfectly fine for MSSF at 1080p at medium/high settings .

Even on the lowest possible settings on a relatively ancient PC the game is heads and shoulders above FS9 in every way possible.  Sometimes people seem to be saying the equivalent of "because making full use of this Ferrari with my local roads is impossible there is no point upgrading from my '60s vintage Morris Minor, it has kept me in good stead for 60 years why upgrade?".

I know people that still ride horses.

Though personally I feel horses are seriously over-rated.

If you park a motorcycle unattended in a garage over winter the most you need to do to get it going again is fit a new battery, often not even that.  If you park a horse unattended in a garage over winter you can guarantee it will never start again, ever.

The other issue with horses is the fuel and maintenance is the same regardless of whether you ride them or not.

oh ... also they bite.  Though at least they do not spit, which the other option, llamas, are prone to do. The llama has never really been popular for personal transport though, probably due to the spitting issue.

There are reasons to stay with really old but familiar tech but they are mainly nostalgic or emotional (attachment to the familiar, fear of the new etc)  and are not logical or rational or practical.

Thanks Glen,  never said it wasn't. Was just a (misguided) attempt at some levity.  I run mostly Ultra settings with AIG,  locked at 30.  From first download, I was astounded at the performance Asobo delivered for an aging PC such as mine. That was coming from FSX. Never looked back.

But, the OP's rig when compared to mine, using FS9, is like hunting deer with RPG's.  ☺️

Thanks for your thoughts Bert....... I've always tried to be a 'Glass half full' chap 🙂  Hence the number of Sims I've gotten on here  (and the reason I upgraded my System a couple of years ago 🙂  ).  I've certainly been impressed with the shared experiences here and in salute to Dillon,  am very appreciative of ALL the views and interpretations of the new MSFS, it really was my hope that people WOULD be honest and share their owns experiences (as they have in abundance). It REALLY has been very informative and I feel I'm getting a good idea of the potential of the program.

I cannot adequately thank the Forum Members enough, it has been an eye opener and certainly preferable to some of the magazine articles. Thanks.

Hi Glenn,  I'm hoping you're correct about the new Sim being head & shoulders above the FS9 program. That would be something 🙂   However, don't get me started on old cars...... My everyday transport is 46 yrs. old and I have a couple of old bangers from the 1940's (people call them 'ClassicCars' these days but they're just old motors....... very nice too!)

However, I do get the message...... one must move on!

Thanks for your input.

I loved this Glen...... and the analogy 🙂  I regularly flew wood and canvas aircraft - besides quite modern jets (well for my era!!) but I wouldn't recommend fighting a war in them these days!

I never liked horses either...... bite at one end and a kick at the other, that said the French say they make good steaks,  and who can argue with a good French Chef..... they certainly know about food 😉

Thanks for taking the trouble to put things into prospective.
