In terms of how they know, I imagine MSFS must be able to see the Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) of any connected USB device which would identify any hardware they have a problem with unless steps are taken to disguise that. Though thinking about even if they can identify it if the problem devices are something like a microcontroller (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry PI Pico etc) then even they spot one of those they can't know if it's a malicious device or something benign - my AP panel for example is an RPI Pico device but just acts as a USB HID device Maybe it's a combination of device IDs and specific kinds of input from it ?
