Without being able to do the things I love is not living, it's simply existing. 4 hours ago, martin-w said: Err... and you can do plenty more than that in a comfortable Mars dome. Like what? Outside the dome you need a protective suit and oxygen. Have you ever been river rafting? Have you ever been skiing? Have you ever gone fishing or hunting? Have you ever gone bird watching? Have you ever gone hiking in the mountains? Have you ever gone back-packing? Have you ever grilled a juicy ribeye on your back yard? Have you ever driven to a town 70 or 100 miles away just to have lunch? Have you ever rented an airplane and gone flying? Have you ever walked barefoot on the beach and then laid down and got a sun tan? Have you ever walked in the rain just to do it? Have you ever gone outside on a windy day just to feel the wind in your face? Would I be able to do anyting I mentioned under a Mars dome? List the the plenty more than that I could do in a comfortable Mars dome. You're not much of an outdoor person are you Martin? People who love the outdoors I think would find a Mars existence pretty boring. Noel Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

They are choosing between Mars and our planet which may still be as it is now after they and their children and grandchildren, etc, die of old age on Mars. 4 hours ago, martin-w said: That's very sexist. It was just a hypothetical question but I suppose sexists don't know they are sexist until someone points it out. I could also be ageist because I think the first generation of colonists should not be older than, let's say, 35 or 40 because it may take a generation to establish the colony to the point where it can take care of the elderly. The purpose of a Mars colony isn't as a temporary measure while we build a Star Trek style space ship to take us lightyears across the void. Its a permanent settlement. Multiplanetary, not multiple star systems inhabited. Quote Not for me. If earth becomes uninhabitable for some reason take me along with it. Living under a dome with everything artificial is not appealing to me. Not relevant. The full scale mega mars colony with millions of inhabitants that you were referring to is 50 years plus away, perhaps further. You and I won't be around. Unless they find a way to rejuvenate us and switch off the aging process and perhaps reverse it. Quote Like what? Outside the dome you need a protective suit and oxygen. Again... you were referring to well into the future and a million plus people living in a highly sophisticated artificial environment. Have faith in technology, look again at what I typed regarding the creativity and ingenuity of man and what are potential in this respect truly is. The Mars dome in question, in time, could well be immense in scale and incorporating much of what we love about the Earth. Forests, aquatic regions etc. Ultimately it would not be an unpleasant experience at all. Quite the opposite. Technological innovation is a powerful force and technological innovation is progressing rapidly. Quote Have you ever gone back-packing? Have you ever grilled a juicy ribeye on your back yard? Have you ever driven to a town 70 or 100 miles away just to have lunch? Have you ever rented an airplane and gone flying? Have you ever walked barefoot on the beach and then laid down and got a sun tan? Have you ever walked in the rain just to do it? Have you ever gone outside on a windy day just to feel the wind in your face? Some yes, some no and some not interested. And again... a version of you, in the future, who didn't like the absence of any of those things would never go to mars anyway, he would stay on Earth. And if he had to because the Earth was no longer liveable, then I'm sure he would rather be in a nice, highly sophisticated, comfortable dome covering many, many acres (or perhaps miles) with interesting stuff to do, than, err, dead. Quote List the the plenty more than that I could do in a comfortable Mars dome. I already have given you some. We are talking well into the future. The Dome in question would be huge, woodland, lakes, wildlife, lots of outdoor (but in a mega sized dome) things to do. If you wanted you could explore the surface of Mars and the fascinating landscape, lava tubes, the largest canyon in the solar system. Or nip back home and have great fun flying like a bird with wings, due to the low gravity but normal atmospheric pressure... I'm not kidding. Now to get to that huge dome with forests and lakes and wildlife we require a first step. The first step is a matter of a few years away. Quote You're not much of an outdoor person are you Martin? People who love the outdoors I think would find a Mars existence pretty boring. Then they could stay on Earth. Or if they had no choice because the Earth was uninhabitable stay on Earth and die. I know which I would choose. Quote You're not much of an outdoor person are you Martin? Yes but not relevant. I wont be going.

February 21, 20224 yr Author 12 minutes ago, martin-w said: Forests, aquatic regions Where are you going to get the sunlight and water necessary for forests. Aquatic regions? Like lakes and rivers? Where is the water going to come from? 15 minutes ago, martin-w said: The full scale mega mars colony with millions of inhabitants that you were referring to is 50 years plus away, Millions of inhabitants? How big is this dome going to be? Not only to house millions but also to feed and water them? You will need farmland and livestock. How are you going to irrigate and fertilize the farmland? How will livestock fare in a low gravity environment? I know this is far into the future but you are pipe dreaming what you wish is going to happen. If mankind had the technology to create a colony that can support millions on Mars then mankind can certainly steer away or destroy asteroids and clean up the environment here on earth. Unless, of course, your dream is going to Mars because you just want to go to Mars under the spell of Elon Musk. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. You're not an outdoors person so you would have no idea how much the outdoors means to those of us who are. It is VERY relevant to us who dwell in the bosom of Mother Nature. It is something we can't live without. You have no idea how much I miss it because I can't go there anymore. I large part of my life has been severed now that I am essentially housebound. I have my memories and my pictures but somehow that isn't enough. So I am the model outdoorsman who has to choose a life without it on Mars or taking my chances by staying with it. My choice would be to stay with it until the end. You play with your rockets and I'll play with my fly rods and hiking sticks. We are miles (or kilometers) apart on this. Noel The tires are worn.
