I think Regdesign released a remarkably good-looking scenery actually, and don't think I'll be quick to get FT unless people are saying that the performance is incredible. Exactly. FT's Toronto had pretty terrible performance upon release in Prepar3d. They provided some updates later which improved it somewhat and it ran on my system so-so, but as far as I recall it remained their most performance-critical product. Not to hit FT too strong for this, though, as these major hubs are certainly very hard to make detailed and performant at the same time, and I wouldn't be surprised to see similar issues for RegDesigns. That's similar for EGLL where I recall all Prepar3d versions struggled as well. February 28, 20224 yr The problem with CYYZ in P3D was the city itself. Basically the whole area is urban, which means a lot of autogen etc. It was the same at KBOS, which ran just as badly - curiously even WITHOUT the FT KBOS installed. Other FT sceneries ran great. No idea how it will be in MSFS, though, but I guess the performance will be similar to Regdesigns version, just because it's a photogrammetry city all around the airport (isn't it?). For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

February 28, 20224 yr Today I noticed some photogrammetry inside the airport. As if some of the buildings are on top of PG. Anyone else? Panning while taxiing was impossible if I don't lower your terrain LOD. I had to set mine to 50 and it's still choppy. MSFS

Spot on!🍻 Even the traditional FSX problematic areas such as CDG, KLAX,KMIA,NYC/JFK and the notorious CYYZ Toronto Pearson area due to just densely packed urban cityscape and more than one airport with all their own scenery objects and AI air and ground traffic trying to render at once. MSFS is very impressive in terms of addon scenery performance for me. In older sims these areas were hell just to descend into even with default airports…let alone rendering them in VR! It feels really good not to have to worry about OOMs or blurries on CYYZ final approaches anymore. That's probably why (I never had P3D without DD's cityscapes). For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

OOMs an CTDs are long gone from P3D, but yes, I get your point and I agree that performance-wise MSFS is really up there with the best. For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. March 9, 20224 yr They've released a temp patch for bad performance on their discord server, reducing the textures from 8k to 4k.
March 9, 20224 yr That is a good step, but I really wonder about the decision to use 8k textures in the first place. In an airport of this size and complexity that seems just to be looking for trouble, which they got. MSFS 2024. It shouldn't be too long before hardware will be able to handle 8k textures. IIRC, this happened several times before when we went from 512 to 1k textures, and again when we went from 1k to higher res textures. I'm sure we;ll be talking about 16k textures at some point unless we absolutely hit a wall where it doesn't help to go higher. That being said, those previous steps should have alerted them to the issue that some user's HW would have problems with them so they should have made lower res textures an option from the get-go. March 9, 20224 yr I flew into CYYZ twice just before Covid essentially closed up travel. Something about the FlyTampa CYYZ seemed off.. didn't look as modern as i remembered the Airport. Meanwhile the other new developer overshot the mark on the system requirements. Ive got a healthy system but 8k textures? yeah .. we arent quite there yet. I still shy away from downloading A320nx repaints that unzip to close to 1 gig of textures. Just overkill at the moment, some of it very un optimized and unnecessary. I'm one of those super picky types when it comes to add-ons (only Rex Accuseason and A320NX) so i haven't purchased airports as yet but this airport was on my eventual purchase list (KMIA, KFLL, CYYZ) but will have to wait till they modernize the appearance hopefully in an update.
