Is there ANY phone that is just a phone without a camera and games and GPS and all that unnecessary stuff if all you need it for is to communicate?

What kind of phone did your wife get?

An alcatel.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I was just going to suggest the Alcatel. Mine does have "WhatsApp", "Facebook", "Assistant", "Maps" and "YouTube" icons on the little screen. 😒

I have never even looked at her phone.  Perhaps they do have that stuff but all she uses it for is telephone calls.  If I get flip phone that's all I'd use it for.  That's all I use my iPhone for.  I did get a GPS app for it several years ago when we were still hiking in the mountains.

I'm thinking now along the lines of a landline maybe.

Noel, on the plus side, the number buttons are BIG, and there is no "touch screen" at all. I don't care about those icons myself since I only have a 4G/5G phone connection anyway. I don't want or need any internet plan, so those icons only decorate the little screen... 😄

I got my first cellphone about a year ago after I had a serious medical event. I got the simplest flip phone to carry whenever I go out alone. Only two family members have the number and I have them plus family doctor plus two specialists on speed dial. I turn it on only when I go out. Even though it was the simplest, cheapest one available, it still has e-mail, Internet, radio as well as camera and music player but I use it only for emergency phone calls and nothing else. I think old folks have been the majority of users of flip phones for this purpose because of their relative simplicity. At home, I have a land line, mostly for internet connection because I rarely make or receive phone calls.

Dugald, I have an iPhone but it sits on my desk all the time.  I hardly never take it out with me.  It has not become a part of my anatomy.

Sometimes in the evening while we are watching a movie o TV my wife will say, "Your phone is ringing."  I tell her if it's important they'll leave me a message and if it's not who cares?

If I'm at my desk and it rings I'll answer it unless the phone puts the Possible Scam notice on the screen.

unnecessary  stuff is  the  only  thing  is  the  games,  camera  is  good  for  taking  pictures  if  you have  a minor  car  accident  and  you need  evidence,  gps  is  good  if  your  lost in the  woods   they will be  able  to  find  you  alot  quicker

If it's important they'll leave me a message.  After hours I will not be distracted by phone call.  They can leave me a message.  I check for them before I go to bed if the phone rang while I was watching a movie.

BTW...I haven't been to a movie in theater in a long, long time.  Do people have phones growing out of theirs while trying to watch movie in theaters?

I know the last rain trip I took I was in the observation lounge car watching the scenery and at least half the other passengers in there were on their cell phones.

It's a part of the culture now that a phone be growing out of you ear.

If it's an emergency, they are not going to just hang up without leaving a message. Everyone in my life knows to leave a message and, if I am there, I'll pick up the phone as soon as they start talking..

In my case they would hang up and text me knowing there are situations I can't pick up if it's not an emergency...

When my wife had to get a new phone to replace her old flip phone because the old one wouldn't work in 5G she opted for a flip phone.

Bah, what do you mean "old flip phone"?   I just got rid of my 2006-era flip phone a few months ago.  Poor thing was falling apart at the hinge.

One of the problems we have at work Is calling when calling crews out from standby (especially on earlies) their mobiles are always switched off or on silent.

When we finally get hold of them it's the same excuse 'cat pulled the charger lead out of the wall, and the battery went flat'.  First time I heard that excuse 10 years ago I thought it was a quite a good excuse, I've heard most excuses,  but that one tickled me. Very inventive

10 years down the line i hear it every week now.  Incredibly annoying, I miss landlines.

If you don't like them delete them. Uninstall them. Its not compulsory to use them.

I have one of the most sophisticated phones a around, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, I use a lot of the feature's. However, there would be nothing stopping me using the phone in a basic fashion. These features are not compulsory to use.
