Night Lites - Better?

Featured Replies

I haven't flown at night alot but recently have noticed with SU8 that street lites look great especially in the countryside and small towns.  Great improvement.

Just started a trip up the West coast of the UK the other day.

My working hours mean that with live time and weather I usually get to fly the last 30 min around dusk when the street lights etc. turn on in MSFS. I love the atmosphere around that time.

Yesterday I flew from Liverpool to Blackpool. Here’s a shot over Preston with Manchester at the horizon. Thought it was beautiful:

Night lights look great from low altitude, but anyone flying tubes can see that after about 20 miles out you get the dreaded sepia glow. Cities to me look like orange blobs at altitude with no definition.  Fly into Dubai or Qatar at night in a heavy and you just get a yellow glow where there should be a city.

What's stunning is that people have largely gone, "Yep, this is how cities look in real life from the air", and Microsoft have closed the complaint, filed as "done".  I guess it must just be me!

Yep, it's just you.

Not just him.  Apart from the sepia mask, the the original night lighting at launch was the best.  I don't know why they had to mess with it.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Definitely not just him. Yes as mentioned many many times before, the lighting used to be better. In alpha, the night lighting was truely an amazing experience. Just needed to remove the sepia mask and you had the best night lighting ever in a flight sim.

Why aren't people filing this sepia mask again at zendesk? Please take a few minutes to do so.

This, and we start another massive thread on the official forums. The one we started before was the reason the night lighting is better than before, but still not what it used to be in the early days!

For a true night experience in sim, the other sim still wins. Same with car traffic, especially at night. This isn’t a complaint, or a sim off, just an observation.

Progress nonetheless IMO.

Flying with terrain sliders on 400. I am getting a good representation of night flying with out the sepia mask.  Looks much better now. I get lights almost to the horizon even from 35000 feet.

I shared a screenshot touting how good Dubai looked w/ some XP users and the immediately reply was that it is so hazy there in RL so seeing yellow glow from aloft sounds entirely plausible.

I do not recall this was the case I think night lighting has improved immensely from early on.  Do you have any screenshots capturing early on?

I think people are talking about the terrain glow even on the desert.

I’m talking ALPHA. Before it was out. I’ll have to check but don’t think much because of NDA. But was amazing in Alpha. Even if you watch some early videos you can see. Yes they improved it after they nerfed it. It’s better than that. Even the light spread and variation in Alpha was better.
