That’s all very interesting to read. So basically pre-SU5 you got pretty much stable 30 fps with LOD 500. And in the current state of the sim, after upgrading to a state of the art 3090ti, you need to reduce LOD to 100 to have acceptable performance… Wow.

This is exactly what I have been saying (or at least trying to say) here for the last few months. But, folks here are in the ‘it’s fine for me’ crew or don’t say a bad word against Asobo etc…

I actually thought about you when posting. But other people have also reported it here as well as over on the MSFS forums. Of course I’ve no idea what causes this, but clearly something’s not going the right way.

Btw I find it much easier to have an honest discussion here than over in the other camp.

So yes, turning the LOD down to 100 makes it flyable again on one level but is unacceptable to me visually. Might be OK if I'm out in the H135 or similar but nothing where I expect to see a horizon of any sort.

Thanks so much for the careful analysis, Andy, much acknowledged. I already tried TLOD=100 before the latest hotfix but I just can't stand it. I recall taxi lines becoming blurry a dozen of meters in front of my plane. People already tried to convince me to lower my TLOD (300 at present) on the official forum but I'm not going that road. I know it worked perfectly before Asobo did that strange cut in the SU9 beta.

Kind regards, Michael

Thanks, I already voted for the first one and now for the second one, too. I hope they will wake up, finally, after there were several similar threads in the SU9beta forum.

I'll contribute a question to the next Q&A if no one else does. And one more (again) concerning that nasty VR stuff, although the latter has been asked several times already to no avail.

Kind regards, Michael

I guess it's a blessing in disguise that I've never flown with anything over LOD 100, so I don't know any better.  Although I definitely SHOULD be able to with my hardware (3700x, RTX 3080).

Got it. But does it mean that fix only improves performance when being at one of those cities or overall?

overall everywhere

To disable the PG cities, you do not disable any world updates. You use the menu in content manager to disable only part of the world update, the PG cities part. That menu isn't obvious you must click an icon.

If you don't like the result after doing this, then just go back into content manager and re-install (re download) those cities and you are back to where you started very quickly.

Overall. Anywhere in the world where you are near the ground.

The weird thing is these same PG cities months and a year ago did not cause this issue. Now after SU9 they do I guess. So it means the problem is a new bug; the problem is not PG itself.

Just to add to my previous posts - my CPU utilisation is typically about 25-35% and the GPU didn't break much past 60%. My frame rates were always main thread limited. Before I tried either of these fixes I was probably seeing more like 45% CPU, and definitely blocking out core/thread 0 at 100%. In the later experiments with these fixes the overall CPU util was lower and I had no single thread over maybe 85%.

Definitely something bad in the main thread here, but not apparently for everybody. Still, when it gets fixed I think I'll be very happy with the 3090 (and let's face it, I bl00dily well ought to be!)

Not me. My ground performance has been slowly grinding down for months. But there's been so much other noise with these updates its hard to tell what's really going on.

Voted on both of these and also copied my post from here to over there.

BonniestManx065 over on MSFS forum says "the issue is CPU loading and they must have changed something that impacts it heavily which exacerbates the issue for anyone who already had a system limited by CPU and not GPU"

This is why I am not uninstalling PG, the issue does present itself in any meaningful way on my system. Because I was GPU limited, not CPU limited. Believe it or not my budget Ryzen 5 3600 is dynamite fast in the main thread. But my 2060 Super GPU is mediocre. So I don't see any big issue down low at a dense scenery airport now as compared to 2 years ago.
