Episode 3: ATC in XP12

Featured Replies

I've been trying all life long to properly learn / practice ATC ( we make very very limited use of it in gliders, and sometimes we should really talk...) !

I believe XP12 will be it for me at last !!!

Not saying there's no ATC on the other side, nor that it can't be used as well, and developed further in the future, but what I've heard being described as the new ATC for XP12 is simply remarkable !

Yes the work he has done will change the way we fly. Cant wait.

This guy from LR (Jim) is a nice refreshing departure from Austin's over the top interviews. 😂

Some details:

  • Jim, the developer is a real GA Pilot (nice!)
  • ATC ground work is a base line for future development
    • They admit there will be missing items
      • VFR portion espcially
    •  focuses on getting core stuff stable initially (nice)
  • One thing that's not missing is a female pilot voice (nice!)
  • Pre-recorded synthesis, stored on your HDD and not streamed
    • lose internet connection wont affect ATC service (nice!)
  • Particularly targeted to beginners (attention: @jcomm)
    • Menu system items are simplified phrases, and not what the actual pilot would reply to ATC, in order to avoid jargon
    • "great place to learn in preparation for VATSIM"

All in all, this is a very exciting part of XP12.

I flew into the same field as the Sailplane Grand Prix (won by Stefan Langer)  last month. We all got along fine on the frequency 🤡

This guy is very talented and I had a brief opportunity to collaborate with him in the past. I can't wait what he got waiting for us.

I have to skip VATSim often and fly offline Pilot2ATC due to real life issue (WFH/Meetings) where I have to pause the simulator.  Really looking forward to a native ATC in the sim that is "aware" of other traffic / state machine.

I follow Langer's videos since a while. Great pilot !

You know, I can easily deal with local traffic, even x-country, although my EASA license has mistakenly been re-emmited without radio communication competences 🤣 a mistake due to the authority that will "soon" ( so I hope ) be fixed, but it looks like they know only too well what most glider pilots do - they forget to communicate...

Whenever I get away from my area, and into or over other traffic zones, I always communicate and maintain proper VFR. Problem is in flight simulators when I try to talk to ATC - and the reason why I gave up on VATSIM / IVAO more than 15 yrs ago when I tried for the first time... I have serious difficultioes in understanding what they say, specially at the pace they talk, and with age it's getting worst :-/

Will XP12 integrate/display realtime traffic AND its ATC will also accomodate realtime traffic as well?  Here's an example of what I"m referring to:

Here's me and another UAL (from FlightAware, I believe is where MSFS gets its online real time traffic from) in LNM for context:spacer.png

An in-sim:spacer.png

You can see ATC is interacting w/ RW UAL 2309:spacer.png

And as UAL2309 is cleared to land, I'm directed to Go Around for obvious reasons:spacer.png

This area seems to be improving steadily in terms of dealing w/ large amounts of real time actual traffic and integrating my own flight with that big context.  Will XP12 be offering something like this?

@Noel,

I believe we have a good hint about that in here:

One aspect that really makes me a fan of this or any similar product is using it for my own familiarization with proper ATC handling in controlled airspace, something I did experiment with many years ago, starting with ATP Rev D, then Airline Simulator 2, and some years later with ELITE IFR training scenarios and an ATC addon for FSX.

I tried it with IVAO and later VATSIM, but I could never find the necessary conditions to play a sim and talk to ATC without interferring or being interferred by family live around - it didn't work well, so I simply gave up 😕

This section of the video is particularly encouraging for me 🙂 :

I was also never able to use default XP ATC up until now, so I look forward for this to be a real game changer!

I used MFS ATC at begining. It isn't bad, but it's just a sketch of what we wanted it to be. Looks to me XP12 will finally include a worth using / exploring / developing ATC environment, and I particularly liked this element of the LR team - sounds like someone who is pragmatic, has experience in programming interesting applications for different platforms, and has RW experience since he ended up getting his PPL.

If it brings with an open SDK I think we can forecast a success.

What I heard was that ATC is aware of aircraft controlled by a single controller, and that he acknowledges the obvious challenges of trying to sync user's flight w/ real time traffic and my sense was that he wasn't sure how well he/they will perfect this issue, and he also prefaced w/ "should" versus "would".  This makes me think they have more to do.  I have wondered thru several potential methods to address this and this may be total red herring but after being out of the country for 3 weeks then returning to fly MSFS I've had 5 flights now where the craziness of this issue seems to have improved measurably.  It may well be just a little less traffic has made this appear to be improving, but FWIW the 5 flights have been remarkably good in terms of syncing user and real traffic.  I think there must be some control over traffic density such that code thins out traffic as needed to improve sync.

Very, VERY likely not. Like 95% not. Live traffic requires access to data gathered from ADS-B networks, a lot of which is only provided by commercial vendors. Licensing such data for use in XP falls into Laminar's "keep licensing costs for third party content close to or at zero" policy.

The only way to get live traffic in X-Plane is via third party plugin, which as of now, does neither provide engine sounds (potentially subject to change with better fmod support in XP12) nor ATC interaction (likely to change if there is an ATC API in XP12). It honestly would be a small miracle if XP12's default AI system started supporting flight plans and used very little CPU overhead, but I've lost all hope for that.

Interesting thanks Bjoern for your insights.  MSFS has a little farther to go to solve the inherent issues in it but I think it's doable and it's a pretty cool immersion enhancer.

This looks interesting.  Hopefully it can be altered a bit for regional verbiage - circuits would be called patterns in the US for example.

Yes this kind of detail is mentioned. He gave decimal vs point as an example.

Jim says in the video that there are indeed regional differences included, and they even choose some of the Amazon voices w/ accents for the appropriate regions. it's actually sounding pretty cool, i just hope they've also fine tuned things like how often ATC spams you with heading instructions or flies you into mountains etc.
