Should Asobo postpone WU for game fixes

Featured Replies

Well I think the issue goes beyond just world updates. I realize the need to constantly keep up the marketing in various ways to increase the user base. Fundamentally that’s a good thing. WUs, the Topgun DLC, free vintage aircraft and now the Halo thingie - I guess they can all increase the enhancement of the sim for a large number of users.

It does feel a bit sour however with all these things being introduced whilst the rather long list of bugs and issues still remain unchanged. Just to mention the need for some to delete photogrammetry cities in order to have reasonable performance on the ground at various US airports. Or the degradation of performance and CTDs on medium/long-haul flights. And of course the ridiculous AI aircraft behavior.

Sadly it seems that those of us who point out the need for bug fixes and a more stable performance, are in minority. And mentioning this is quickly classified as whining or being unappreciative of all the great stuff the sim has to offer. Or being hard-core, elitist or even a status simmer…

TL;DR: Whilst the free A310 is a very nice and welcome surprise, the excitement is somewhat dampened by the long list of bugs and issues that remain unresolved.

Being word not allowed of software development, I do wonder if ASOBO could make a change to team sizes. Cut the WU team in half, increase the SU team by 50%.

I read somewhere that more devs don't necessarily make bug fixing go any faster, so I'd love to read the thoughts on those who have experience in the field.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

The argument they have different teams and the WU team can not fix bugs is getting really old

And saying ‘I don’t want to hear that’ is also getting a bit old TBH. I agree all of the bugs in your list are irritating, sometimes infuriating. That doesn’t mean I want them to stop polishing regions, throw their project-cycle plans out the window and start a new plan based on what I and a vocal set of the community demand as our priorities.

But no matter how much you or I might not want to hear it, at the end of the day the answer is that they need to balance their resources to achieve long-term aims, not drop everything when one group demands it, especially when you can be WNA sure that other groups will not be happy.

I think they’re doing a pretty good job with the balancing-act so far.

I don’t think that’s true at all. So many of the threads on the official forums are about bugs, the devs have polls about bugs, and regular weekly updates show the status / ‘popularity’ of those bugs.

I think there is a very vocal minority of users who complain very loudly when MS / Asobo sneeze in a direction that isn’t addressing their bugs with the utmost speed.

Well Cpt_Piett, as has been discussed numerous times, and as Asobo/MS have themselves said many times, doing World Updates and extra DLC content is *not* impacting their ability to focus on bugs and core sim improvements. Especially for the DLC aircrafts/etc that are done entirely by 3rd parties.. and the WU devs very likely have completely different skillsets than those doing core sim updates. Now I suppose you might say that you don't believe that, and that these WUs and additional DLCs *are* impacting them, but you can understand how it's then their word against those on the outside assuming all kinds of things.

FWIW, again, let's go right by the source, by what MS/Asobo themselves are saying as recently as yesterday:

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/official-discussion-xbox-bethesda-games-showcase-announcements/524246/204
"I can assure you that the dev team at Asobo is very hard at work fixing bugs and improving the core sim experience. The planes that are coming in the 40th Anniversary Edition are just like our Local Legends and Famous Flyers series of addon aircraft: we’ve contracted some of the best 3rd Party Developers in the business (like Carenado, iniSimulations, MilViz, and more) to create those planes for us. Not one minute of Asobo developer time that would have otherwise been spent addressing performance & stability, fixing bugs, or otherwise improving the base MSFS code was lost because we chose to release these addon planes for our community."

Developing a sim of this scale is no doubt a monumental task. And I don’t think any of us has any meaningful insight into how MS/Asobo are managing their resources in order to accomplish this task. But I’ll hold them to their word re: core sim updates balanced against WUs etc.

7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

They've had job openings for the development team since the release, and right now they have 15 open positions to hire people on jobs that are directly related to fixing bugs.

It's not the money allocation. They've been increasing the programming team all the time.

Whatever it is that's holding the core of MSFS back, and whatever the reason for frustrating bugs - it won't be solved by holding the content updates back.

Sim Update 10 in August is apparently going to be doozy. They even pushed it back from July to allow more time for beta testers to actually have impact.

well, imo they pushed it back because July is holiday month in France. And most people just go on holiday no matter what. Strong employee laws in France. Which is good !

Remember last year when the whole Asobo Marketplace team went on holiday right after the Xbox release.

'more time for beta testers', sure....sounds good though and is propably a welcome side effect of the situation 👍

The July thing is coincidental obviously... the fact is they plan (and said so) to do less and more extended SU releases per year starting with SU10, not *just* SU10. I really don't think they'd try to mask regional employees going on holidays with lies about extended betas in order to improve quality.

What they've said:
- https://youtu.be/pZ6lp8SPFKQ?t=1574 ("lengthen the Sim Updates" ... "upon reflection we're going too frantic" ... "update a month gives not enough time to test" ... "most likely we are going to slow down frequency of sim updates"

So all of above was said just so that they can hide the fact that they're going on holiday in July? 🙂

In my estimate:

70% of bugs reported are user error
25% of bugs reported are "nice to have" or "in the process of being improved" features
4% are irritating bugs (like the rolling thunder)

1% are showstoppers --> and there are very few of them, the majority, I suspect, generated by incompatible mods in the community folder, overclocks, messing around with "improvement fixes", or altering core files.

There seems to be two types of people here.

One side in the trenches actually using the sim knowing what issues it has and another that gets a kick out of shouting down from the top telling the peasants to stop complaining and be happy with their free content.

No one using this sim each day from the start and who wants it to improve will have the nerve to tell others that 70% of reported bugs are user error when they can be so easily replicated by anyone willing to test.

Oh I've been frustrated quite a bit at times, taking breaks from flying with MSFS, and some bugs have been around much longer than I would've expected.

Still, at this point I'm really enjoying the sim, even though some things are annoying, others need workarounds, but learning to fly the PMDG 737 and the Fenix A320 correctly is a very rewarding experience, and currently not plagued by any severe bugs, at least not for me.

I'm mostly here to enjoy watching the arguments unfold, so I think you might underestimate the number of types.

Others have already said the two are basically disconnected so no ,,delaying next wu is pointless. With so many variables between users and the game/sim it doesnt suprise me the range of experiences some people are having.

People must be free to express their error reports obviously, but i wonder why so many videos on social media sites run so smoothly.
