Are clouds the best ever now? I'm impressed.

Featured Replies

I'm testing SU10 for about 6 hours per day and have been getting more impressed with the clouds.  I just completed a flight from EGPF to ENAL in the Just Flight BAe146.  There was a weather system between the two airports. Before the Metar was implemented, I remember clouds like those below, but after metar the sky was mostly just cumulus of varying sizes.  It feels and looks like the weather is getting back to what MSFS initially had.

In this image I'm climbing on the SID approaching a weather front over Scotland.  Rather than clouds being made up of cumulus puffs, I was seeing solid clouds of different types and altitudes Low cumulus before the front on the right, a high level of stratus and a solid wall of cloud ahead between the two - even this wall is made up of visible rain and CB's.

In the next shot I am closer to the front. The cloud types and lighting are great - even looks like mammatus front right!

I am now climbing through the top of the weather system - instead of this anvil type cloud being made up of cumulus puffs, it is solid. I was climbing through FL260 - when I entered the cloud I immediately felt turbulence which my ButtKicker reacted to strongly.

SU10-3.png

I'm now through the weather in a layer of cirrus/cirrostratus.  I was so impressed with the cloud below.  A layer of stratus with uneven tops with areas of pure stratus.  visibility was depicted very nicely.

SU10-4.png

Descending on the STAR into ENAL. Thick layer of cirrus/cirrostratus with low cumulus.  What struck me with this shot was the flat layer of the thicker higher cloud, with the sky underneath it in shadow hidden by a more wispy layer below the aircraft.

Flying along the coast of Qld Australia yesterday where we had a massive low sitting off the coast. Looks pretty good! This is still SU9.

Those are great screenshots. Just finished a flight from EGPH to ENBL in the TBM. And although the clouds look impressive, I'm still just seeing cumulus and "modified cumulus" clouds. No stratus or cirrus.

I'll include a couple of screenshots from cruise FL290 just off the coast of Norway. Apologies for the bad quality (taken with my iPhone) - I had a problem capturing with the xbox game bar.

Anyway, I'll keep up the cloud hunting 😉

So ... you even confirm my statement, that MSFS hasn't turbulences in its clouds. Thanks ...

They're talking about visuals, not the physics. The calculation to create the cloud visuals isn't connected to the calculations for turbulence.

After more beta testing, I'm starting to think that clouds indeed have improved significantly. The clouds look better overall, and the cloud layers at lower altitude seem more realistic.

A bit outside the thread topic, the gusts can seem a bit overdone. And the sudden weather changes are very noticeable.

This is from an approach into ENAL in the A32NX earlier today. Except from the lack of true stratus layers, the cloud layers did look impressive, and not far from the forecast.

Both shots are good, but the second is stunning!  Many cloud types at different levels plus rain!

Something in the density and consequent shading seems slightly more cloud-like than recent builds as well.

Agreed. And it seems like the volcanic ash clouds are few and far between too.

This is from Kauai, HI. I really like the rainclouds in the distance and the low cloud base. I don't think I've seen weather this impressive since pre-SU7.

I agree weather per se has steadily improved--but close up cloud depiction is pretty sorry IMO and I hope the headroom you described will be exploited to this end bigtime.

I really don't think the cloud depiction up close is that bad though.

So..........all that talk about clouds being dumbed down for Xbox............

In other news I came acorss lightening tonight. Searched for where it was happening online and went to one of the locations in the sim and presto! No zaps happening in the cockpit either.

It seems they have been fixing the weather servers. I'm getting the correct weather at MYNN for 2 days in a row. Didn't happen for many moons. Hope this is not a coincidence.
