XP12: the good, the bad, the ugly

Not necessarily. We won't know unless they try. But this is basically just XP11 ground textures in Xp12. They're ancient.

I disagree. The repeated negativity about this topic in this forum is a clear indication that it won't matter if they're ancient or not. It's ortho or nothing for most.

How so?

PS2 grade US buildings in Japan (for example) can degrade the experience from 2,500 ft just as much as 500ft, especially when the orthos are good quality.

Sometimes, only the negative speak up. Trait of AVSIM. I for one would be happy to see what alternatives they could come up with.... As Ortho isn't the be-all and end-all either. Especially poor Ortho...

one has to purchase the high capacity drives to store the Ortho. And for those of us who are unfortunate to not have high speed internet, I dread the download times of the Ortho.

Unless the drive is already installed. Terabytes are more and more common.

The downloads happen once, yes. And then never again. Unlike streaming the data repeatedly. Or maybe you're creating a cache file? In which case, you'll need terabytes there too.

What a badge of honor. Coming from a donor no less.

That’s true in any walk of life… human nature. PS not sure what me being a donor has to do with it?

If you go to that other site and search about the topic, you'll see that the new textures and autogen improvements are part of a limited number of areas at the moment.

The rest of the scenery will be brought up to similar standards such as the demo areas as XP12 matures. How soon or how complete the coverage? Time will tell.

Pros and cons of XP12:-

Con = you spend $60 for it and then you have to obtain terabyte drives and spend more money just for ground textures, in 2022...... No thanks.

Do you realize it's the same for DCS? And that's hardly a non-2022 sim. Any other simulator than MSFS has huge disk requirements, if you think of it. Like I said before... I use P3D, MSFS, XP11, IL-2, DCS, etc. I understand the autogen / old textures argument. I think it's too early to know how XP12 will look two or three years from now. XP11 in 2022 is hardly the same XP11 of 2017. Let's give it time.

Actually, does FS2020 let you install 3rd party ortho over the top of their streamed data? I've not heard of that being an option. Could be wrong.

Yes, it's called the Map Enhancement tool.

I was talking about XP12, not DCS or MSFS. This is the pro and con of XP12 thread, and I listed a con...

That looks like the google vs bing concept, isn't it? I'm wondering about someone wanting to create their own tiles. In other words, is there an ortho4xp equivalent over there? Can someone download the imagery and terrain mesh on their own and create a scenery tile that the program would then load instead of streaming the data in (or going to the internal download cache)?

A very subjective con. But, please carry on, the feast goes on.

What is subjective about it? The ground textures are awful, as is the Autogen. I think that is in fairly widespread agreement. No one is 'feasting', as you put it.

Now that's subjective. Probably also the majority opinion

The near-airport textures appear to be updated. I've noticed what appear to be various texture layers on top of each other mixing grass and dirt, for example. Could be GPU shader-based algorithms, or maybe they just did some fancy layering in photoshop before baking the final image. Either way, ground textures in and around KPDX could very easily pass as ortho.

And from my understanding, the intention is to bring the rest of the scenery areas to that same standard. To what extent? We'll see. But KPDX in my *subjective* opinion, looks very nice.

What are you talking about? Are you a spokesperson for Laminar? I don’t think so.
We are merely presenting our opinion on the latest XP12. It does some things good, and some things bad. Hence the title of the topic. If you can’t handle that, maybe you should remove yourself?

PS if people rested on one’s laurels, then we would never make any further progress.

It's the same pattern since years and decades: MS users (of course not all, but so called "usual suspects") are pouring out into XP fora, into Flightgear fora, into Linux fora, into Openoffice fora, into Apache server fora, into Mozilla/Firefox fora, into ... [endless list] fora to kick up a stink with their negativity *. When they get contradiction they get angry and suggest the users of these fora to remove themselves from these said fora ... WT F??

* I remember Steve Ballmer saying several years ago, Linux is a cancerous ulcer and needs to be exterminated. So far about the attitude of MS and their supporters.
