That's unfair !

All flightsims, just like the live partners we idealize, have their sexy pluses and appeal aswell as their blue side.

I am sure I will be able to enjoy the best / sexyest aspects of xp12 and expect for the not so good ones to become ironed out with time and good addons, just as I am doing with MFS.

The only difference between the two major sims in this regard now that 12 is available, is that for 12, one has to build the VFR experience themselves by either building or downloading the ortho. VFR near big cities where the photogrammetry lies is more about sight-seeing than pure navigation. If you've become lost while flying VFR around Manhattan... yikes. Maybe don't fly airplanes anymore.

When you leave the photogrammetry areas, the two sims are essentially identical if both are running ortho: both are using autogen and XP enables one to install higher resolution tiles. Actually, does FS2020 let you install 3rd party ortho over the top of their streamed data? I've not heard of that being an option. Could be wrong.

I don't think it's the dissenting opinions as much as it is the deluge of repetition from the same people. And from people who are known to have been frequenting these forums the whole time and have been fully aware of what is coming. It's the shameless desire to fight, that becomes tiresome.

Cut them some slack, these usual suspects must be angry by the endless streams of CTDs on "the other side".

Ahhh, so they are over here while the sim reloads! Gotcha.

Actually that's another area where the sims are identical right now. I've had quite a few CTDs in 12. With no error message and no attempt to automatically send a bug report. LR needs to fix the auto-reporter ASAP!

This is the XPlane forum.  Discussion should be limited to that and not comparisons to other Sims!  Any futher comparisons will result in a lock down!

It's not installing, but MSFS allows you to stream 3rd party ortho instead of streaming the default Bing satellite data: https://flightsim.to/file/19345/msfs-2020-google-map-replacement

There is a mod for MSFS allowing you to choose Google or latest Bing tiles to stream instead of the default, although they all come with issues.

By default, no. M$ opensourced their building footprints (billions of structures) and that it is gradually being fed into Openstreetmap. So indirectly via 3rd party, yes. For both placement and variety.

Not talking about google vs bing. Which is hilarious in its own right. I'm wondering about 3rd party like Orbx. If I'm building my own ortho, I can crank up the resolution for XP, if the coverage is available. All that texture fuzziness at low level goes away. The biggest argument against that tends to be 'oh but what about drive space' which really is a red herring argument (thanks mod Bob!) from the last decade. Terabytes are cheap now.

Who said anything about Manhattan? Or big cities? Not me...Try VFR is some remote Scottish countryside, and then tell me if both are identical when Ortho is loaded. They are not. Not by a long stretch of the imagination. Unless Scotland has sprouted up US and German type buildings overnight.....
