XP12: the good, the bad, the ugly

In the locations you have flown or you have data to back that up?

I ask a lot of people of the Xplane community and everyone agrees. The XP12 meshes, right now, are very low resolutions. everywhere. I download the whole world when I did the XP12 install. This is an issue that needs to be corrected. I am uncertain if this is bug or this is how it supposed to be going forward but it is bad everywhere.

Anyone that’s been around XP long enough will probably already have high res meshes provided to the community for free, for most of the world, some of which are ludicrous high res, much higher than MSFS. Last time I checked, you had to shell out money for high resolution meshes for MSFS that only covered certain areas.

it's for people don't want to wait as MS/Asobo already agree they will update the whole world meshes/satellite data.  So you don't need to buy anything.

Yes, it's true that Meshes have always been available for Xplane . but I would have expected LR to included them in XP12. It's pretty bad right now.

I did not see it in this beta. I reiterate, the ground textures and Autogen are pretty poor. (If I knew that was coming or not is irrelevant, its a negative side to Xp12. Hence the pros and cons). A pro side is the smoothness of the sim. Its butter smooth.

They clearly stated ground textures wont be up dated, not so important for release. The plan was always bit by bit so they can optimise as they go. Its wait and see.

The bad/ugly for me continues to be the Steam VR experience using an HP Reverb G2. Same problems as X-plane 11, the whole scene translates forwards and sideways with head motion but rotation is fine. I've investigated the usual suspects, ie. room lighting, resetting environment variables etc. At present it's a pretty miserable experience.  I thought there was talk earlier of X-plane supporing open XR without the need tor  a stream VR intervention ?

Maybe they will. I agree default is not good. Luckily I already have my 6TB of ortho moved over.

If this was true.

Don't understand why Steam VR is required, It's just a clunky mess to have to have steam VR for functionality. Seems like Laminar is lazy and doesn't want to do some work to make VR work stand alone without the need for Steam VR!

Just went back to check. According to earlier discussions, LR said that here will be no change to initial VR implementation on initial release but are looking to support Op[en XR down the road.

Well on the subject of VR, direct from HP on eBay (or the HP site itself), the G2 (which has the newer cable) is $399, free shipping. (Labor Day sale).

I didn't expect it to compete with MSFS graphically, but this is a bit disappointing.

As Flight Sim Hangar said on his YouTube video, "this looks more like XP11.6 than XP12". Sparse trees, edgy streets and rivers, boring ground textures, obvious autogen...

But the best is the B737 FMC in the Aribus. And that's the hyped A330? I thought the ASOBO A320 was bad... well it was... but at least they had a Airbus FMC.

So. Fly the Boeing then. An airliner with a stick always to me was like a semi-tractor with an automatic transmission. I tend to the old ways.

Mesh is great for airliner fans. But we small piston/piston twin drivers are left rather flat. Literally flat at light altitudes.

Weather modeling has ben a major weak point in the past with this sim, and I haven't had time yet to explore to what extent that has improved.

One day after release I took this photo. Bit of Ortho, default C172 and default XP12 live weather.  Visibility effects are great.

Not a bug and won't be changing. LR is still going to sell DVDs of v12 so it's all gotta fit on 8ish discs.

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...

Read the whole thread and I'll try and stay away from the hot-button issues. That said, here are my pros and cons

Pros

1. Works without internet access (after initial install). No need to download large amounts of data as you fly - you can use it offline, the experience doesn't degrade. This is a big deal if you're limited by speed/data. I'm not (symmetric gigabit fiber), but I do like that I can use XP 12 even if my internet gets knocked out.

2. Lighting is vastly improved over XP 11. I prefer MSFS's lighting, but I find that XP 12 is (even at this beta stage) perfectly acceptable and can only get better.

3. Flight model. Not going to get into which is better or worse (I prefer either, depending on my mood + the plane I'm flying. Also, not a real pilot). But it is nice to have a different flight model to try out. The same plane (say the 172) feels very different and I enjoy being able to try this out across two sims. BTW I will say that P3D's flight model is the worst of the lot in my opinion.

4. Ground textures are vastly improved over XP 11. Yes, yes, MSFS is better in this respect, but Xp 12 isn't terrible (with certain exceptions, see cons below), and I don't think it's a bad thing to go in a different direction. It's fine.

5. Liveries - many real-world liveries are included, which is nice to see.

6. Night lighting is beautiful

7. Water looks much nicer than XP 11

8. Good performance on my admittedly high-end machine. Can do 4K with everything turned up to max (or one notch below max). 3080Ti, 5600x, 32 GB

Cons

1. Roads and coastlines/shorelines look bad with very sharp angles. No curves, and this is not realistic at all. Everything is acute angles.

2. Clouds are a mess right now. Very shimmery, looks very soft, just isn't good. The sky is fine without clouds, but with clouds.. nope. Needs a ton of work.

3. Trees - I don't like the new 3D trees that look like they were manually planted. From the air, it's way too geometric and unnatural. Needs work

4. Water effects are very exaggerated. Needs to be toned down.

Overall, I'd say this is a reasonable "early access" release. Nothing catastrophic. Laminar will never be able to compete with MSFS on the PG/Satellite scenery, so no point doing a half-baked job. If they improve the roads and coastlines, make the trees a bit nicer, and add some more house/building styles, it's not bad at all. Fix the clouds, and now you have a great sim.

Yes, that element looks very good.
