Problem with resizing images from FSLTL for FPS saving

If I can figure out a way to optimise these textures easily with a batch command with free software, I'll share it here for everyone to follow..

I used to use something like this back in FSX to batch convert photoshop PSD files to DXT3 with or without mips. Unsure how to use across multiple folder trees etc and also another step to resize would be needed.

@echo off
cls
echo.
echo.
echo -------------------------------
echo MeatWater DXT3 Converter-Script
echo -------------------------------
echo.
echo contact: [email protected]
echo.
echo -------------------------------
echo.
echo.
echo Converting textures, press the DONE button when processing has finished
echo.
imagetool -dxt3 -nomip -r *.psd

A few years ago I wrote an app to handle texture conversion of all sorts of files for Prepar3D AI traffic.  The other day I came across this thread and have updated the app I wrote to support MSFS AI

  • Hi All, I've just published a new version (1.3) of my Texture Optimizer tool.  This version addresses several issues in 1.2 and adds a bunch of new optional parameters that allow you to fine-tune

I have no experience of this at all and have no idea if this works or even makes sense (disclaimer now out of the way!) but the following is from a post on the FS2020 forums, from someone who claims to have converted all of the textures to 1024x1024

A link to the full post, with some performance comparisons and images:

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/fsltl-fs-live-traffic-liveries-is-live/546014/578

May be worth trying a small sample to see if it works.

Thanks for this,

I just gave it a try and reduced all my textures to 1024.

Sitting at FlyTampa CYYZ watching traffic move about and so far I am not seeing the fps drop I did yesterday

Glad that it worked for you but please be aware of @toby23s follow up post where he pointed out that:

"This does not add mip-maps, which are required unless you like shimmering textures and your sim crashing unexpectedly.. see my post above.."

I tried doing this myself but seem to be missing something as around 50% of my aircraft ended up with all black textures. I tried with both 1024 and 2048 with same result.

Have you checked all your liveries have worked?

I had to run out for a meeting so I left the drone looking at the terminals for the last 3 and a half hours while I was gone to see if the fps degraded at all and they did not, I have  couple of wonky liveries but i'd say 90% seem ok. I will try and look further this afternoon

I've asked on their Discord for the Option of a 2K download, the more voices speak up the more inclined they might be to do it.

I have resized all of the livery textures to 2048x2048 and converted them to DXT1 and DXT5 with mipmaps to test them but unfortunately a few of the textures do not convert correctly and I don't understand why.

The following screenshots are all at EGLL using only FSLTL liveries at 2048x2048 resolution. Total folder size approx. 6GB compared to 21GB of the original.

I will not be proceeding with this as a guide as some of the textures are corrupted upon conversion. If anyone wants the instructions on how to do the conversions to experiment, please PM me.

Could you help me? I wanted to add another thumbs icon to your contribution but this function is deactivated for me (stop sign). I can add icons on other channels, so it must be something special with the FSLTL channel.

Any setting to change or to apply for some activation?

Thanks and kind regards, Michael

Solved. I needed a phone confirmation for just hitting that button. Is it really necessary to make life a pain for people 70+?

Thanks for the update, this is the same issue I experienced. Quite frustrating as a lot do resize but it becomes time consuming trying to work out what was successful.

Its like the dds images are layered or have some specific compression going on?

I was thinking something similar. The original image of one of the 'broken' textures looks like this. There is no background colour in the preview but it shows in the thumbnail. I am not sure what could cause this but it will make batch editing impossible until it is fixed.

Is there transparency involved?

I wonder if all the troublesome dds have white in them as per your example? Maybe white has been left out somehow or has a clear background so it doesn’t clash with the livery?

I know that EasyJet did not convert and that is predominantly white, although British Airways did work. Hmm

🙂 I have been experimenting with different conversions all night and I can't 'fix' the 'broken' textures. The majority of the textures can be resized to 2048 and display correctly but some of them, those with an Alpha channel, break on conversion.
