Bijan vs Accuseason

I have a question about this...so, where I live the trees do not change until mid-October.   Whereas a northern place would have total color change right now.   Is MSFS capable of reflecting these locational differences, or must it require a manual fix as done with Florida?

Hi Mace, and thanks for this question. AccuSeason has displayed tree color changes starting at different times in different locations this since day one. The MSFS codebase utilizes regions around the world called EcoRegions, of which there are close to 500 of them throughout the globe. Here is a link to a great interactive map that contains all of these EcoRegions.

https://ecoregions.appspot.com/

What we have put into AccuSeasons is a staggered start to seasons that spans six or seven weeks. To take North America as an example, this means that autumn color changes gradually start in colder and more northern areas. So the northern part of New England starts to see trees gradually (week by week) change colors early in September, peak in mid to late October, go post-peak after that until trees look dormant in late November and beyond. In more southern and warmer EcoRegions, this process starts later, maybe a week later directly south of that area, to a few weeks later in more southern EcoRegions or some places like northern California. Nothing is perfect in MSFS, but this approach is certainly in the spirit of how things progress naturally.

To add, this staggered start of color changes occurs for Spring when green leaves start to emerge slowly. The process in AccuSeason is gradual; one week there are a few trees turning light green, next week more, the following week even more and the week after that, all trees have a light green color, plus there are floral trees that are blooming at this time too. The start-of-spring process is also staggered, like I mention above, with warmer and more southern EcoRegions starting the spring process earlier than cooler and more northern EcoRegions.

Lastly, this process occurs globally, so we have built this staggered and gradual process of changing leaf coloring to Australia, New Zealand, and the southern third of South America. Obviously the northern hemisphere seasons are opposite of the southern hemisphere seasons as in real life.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for this information. I was surprised to find that my small country has five different EcoRegions.

For those waiting for Asobo to implement seasons, I fear you're missing out big time not getting AccuSeason. For all we know REX' implementation might be better than what Asobo comes up with. Time will tell 🙂

I have now bought Rex via JF (I was using Bijan until now, although I usually deactivated it in Africa, as it did a suboptimal job there imo. I always found it only really works well in the usual popular flying areas like USA and Europe.

I hope Rex Accuseason is working better in Malawi !

If it doesn't, Rex guys will surely hear from me (like a lot .g.)

Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria lakes are the home of the famous African Cichlids. Maybe I could create 100 phony user ID's and trick Asobo with fake requests into making the Rift Lake area of Africa the next world update!

@Rex guys :

Should I deactivate this mod now that I run rex Accuseasons ?

I'm sorry but I was wrong before. I just double-checked, and with the mod in place, AccuSeason is not working properly. Tested in Montreal and the nice autumn colours are gone.

I would pay money if REX could do something about the god awful snow in the winter, especially on the runways and taxiways

I have both and have used REX Accuseason exclusively since spring.  More realistic transitions and continuous development and improvements.  I do much appreciate that Bijan pioneered visual seasonality and applaud his efforts.  For multiple reasons I am now since SU10 also using REX WF exclusively. Leaving it at that so not to attract the handful of naysayers and arguments!  Lesson learned....

I don't get it. Seasonal changes are not really exclusively with trees!!!

The foliage, grass, bush, swamps, soil, everything that grows changes with seasons.... Every attempt to only change trees is with season is kind of a lackluster approach in my opinion..... Something is totally missing in the videos provided in this thread by Rex.

That's why Asobo will take their time to get it right or maybe close to it.

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

Agree. Bijan has "scenery masks" that reflect the seasons. REX is planning to introduce this. I don't see any point in waiting though until Asobo finishes their implementation. When we have two good options right now.

I am of the same opinion and asked about this in their discord, with no response. In saying that, Accuseasons is still pretty good. Am really enjoying seeing the changes as Autumn progresses in the northern hemisphere.

I was initially a bit sceptical and got Bijan's. That worked fine but was still tempted to try out Accuseason's auto update feature. Also noticed Rex's engagement with the community and how active they were with their products. So got it when it was discounted. I am happy with it and will keep using it. But hoping to see updates that address seasonal changes to objects other than trees. Unless of course Asobo comes in with something better.

Hi Silicus. Very good points. REX AccuSeason will soon have a Terrain Coloring feature that will be released soon, which colors terrain, grass, bush, swamps, soil, as well as foliage. Here are some images that shows the progression of the coloring of terrain through early autumn, mid-autumn, and late autumn. In the images, I did keep the trees the same just for comparison purposes. I also included default MSFS ground coloring for a baseline.

Given that MSFS has the EcoRegions...is it possible with the SDK to implement certain EcoRegions to have the brown, dry look in their dry season (Winter, Spring), and the green, verdant look in their wet season (Summer, Fall)?

It would be soooo neat to fly from green lush Houston down to Central America in April and see the tan bone dry grass there.  And by the same token, in autumn, fly from KSTL with it's colorful foliage down to Central America and see the green wet season there.

Unfortunately I suffered a massive FPS hit with Bijans mod during SU10 Beta and have not touched it since, should he come back from his troubles and update that'd be great, but life comes first so I hold no angst against him and just wish him the best. I'd long already got my monies worth out of his mod.

MarcG-are you referring to the most recent release from Bijan?  I ask because I began seeing serious main thread impact and had no idea where it came from, but it seemed to happen sometime after SU10 was installed and when I used his last update with the simple install app and injected Fall colors and now that I think back perhaps that's when things started going south for me.  I thought it was perhaps a particular livery w/ the PMDG 738 that appeared to manifest the big hit on the main thread.  Long and short I got impatient w/ troubleshooting and ended up reinstalling MSFS, then since that failed (I copied Community Folder contents into the new install, so in went the most recent season from Bijan), I'm now reinstalling Win 10.  I bet this was it and I just forgot I had installed it, the most recent Bijan fall season.  I've had just no perf issues ever in MSFS so this really caught me by surprise.  Oh well I can rationalize it by fall cleaning as it's been almost 2y since I did the Win 10 install, and it's pretty lean beyond MSFS.

Something changed in SU10 (beta) as his mod (same version) was working perfectly fine on SU9 for me, I read elsewhere something changed for scenery Devs and some others have had to update but can't clarify that fully.

If I get a chance I'll take another look and see if it's still the same, but during Beta I was losing 6-10fps just with this mod and in VR that's too much to lose.
