October 20, 20223 yr I'm all for it. October 20, 20223 yr So should I give the maid the night off? But seriously, improvements in both AI learning, and robotic dexterity in the coming years will certainly make a prediction come true: Robots, not Man, will be sent to Mars first to gather-up rocks and soil samples for transport back to Earth, and perhaps later conduct scientific research while there. Sending robots would certainly be billions of $$$ cheaper, plus they would not need a round-trip ticket...

Err... where have you been for the last 47 years? 😁 Viking 1 landed on Mars and carried out scientific research way back in 1975. As for soil samples, Perseverance, on Mars now, has already collected samples for a later mission to pick up and return to Earth. So no, you haven't given us a prediction there, you have described what's already being done. Geologists and biologists will tell you though, that's there's no substitute for scientific "boot's on the ground". And of course going to Mars isn't just about research, its also about creating a presence, so the human race can avoid existential threats and remain in existence as a species. There are also political/security reasons why its important for us to have a manned presence on Mars and the Moon, which is of course something we cant discuss on the forum. In addition, human nature is such that we are explorers, precisely why we migrated out from the African Savanah and spread across the world. Its a our nature and one of the reasons we have survived until now. And that nature will most definitely be expressed in terms of manned exploration of the solar system and one day perhaps beyond.
October 20, 20223 yr I dont know whether I would employ that particular robot. I for one would want less crinkles in my clothes after folding! October 21, 20223 yr Er, I am taking about a much, much larger sample of rocks and soil (core samples) from various locations miles apart, and sent back to us, as well as experiments to say, trying to grow plants from Martian soil. These type of tasks can really be done only by either men, or intelligent AI robots (with two arms and legs). And like I mentioned, sending men or woman will cost many more billions of dollars (not to mention the hazards involved, and the return trip) than robots. Establishing a permanent outpost probably won't happen until 2023 or 24, if even then?

Far more expensive than a few humans in one location. And we don't have the technology to create, let alone send, a multitude of super intelligent robots for a very long time to come. We have robotic probes there now, a return sample has been prepared and is ready for pick up, and we will be sending humans in 2030 0or there about, not "true AI" robots. You will have to wait a lot longer than 8 years time for super intelligent AI robots to be built in abundance and sent to numerous location, with mega sized spaceships to pick up a truck load of rocks. 😏 19 minutes ago, overspeed3 said: Establishing a permanent outpost probably won't happen until 2023 or 24, if even then? Its 2022 now. So no, obviously not. 😁 But the point is to work toward a self sufficient colony on Mars to avoid a potential existential threat on Erath and we need to develop the capability to do that, and that tales time, brief trips to mars by humans is the first step.

You're exactly right. Sending robots would be much less expensive, not to mention infinitely less hazardous, than sending humans to Mars. Most folks don't understand just how complicated and expensive it will be to send human beings to Mars and return them home, and do all that *safely*. Nevertheless, I think it's worth the expense and risk to send people to another planet.
