Any point to enabling higher than 8 bpc Output color depth

Featured Replies

I am able to but from a brief look an app has to be designed to utilize higher Output Color Depth, which can improve gradient coloration perhaps among other things.  Is MSFS able to exploit this does anyone know?  GPU penalty for same or no?

Once you start getting into color channel bits, the color gamut of your monitor comes into play. If you have a cheaper display, you won't be able to utilize those high bpc and thus tighter color gradients.

I use 10bpc but that's is on a Samsung TV which is recommended. Not sure what benefit it would be on a VA or IPS panel though.

I’m using RGB 10 bits in NCP. Did a quick Google search but couldn’t figure out which color depth MSFS supports.

I tried it but couldn't tell if there is a difference.  Is it obvious on your display?  Once I switched to DisplayPort my audio got messed up some I have to fix it.  ATC voices aren't happening, but did when I went back to HDMI.

I've always had it at 10 which is the highest for my display. Never tried to compare with 8.

I use 10 as well but not sure if I notice it on my Samsung monitor.  Probably on the fringe of being noticeable.

I read reports a long time ago that it reduced the banding in clouds, but that was fixed by Asobo eventually when they discovered they accidentally messed up (reduced) the colour depth bits in their rendering of the clouds.  Remember that one?

Doesn't seem to be an issue for me so we will leave it at 10 ;o)

I think that's a good idea. AFAIK the color depth should not affect performance at all. Apparently there's a huge difference between 8 and 10 bits - 1.07 Billion Colors vs 16.7 Million Colors. This could be a moot point as we haven't verified if MSFS supports 10-bit color depth. But other apps in Windows might.

I run 10 only because I've read it makes night black blacker, but I'm not very knowledgeable of those sorts of things.

I can't say I have noticed much difference between 10 and 8 with my monitor.

The best night mod I made was to turn down brightness by a small amount.

Not sure I get the point, but isn't the HDR mode 10 bits?

If you have a HDR display, a HDR capable GFX card plugged into it and select HDR "on" in MSFS settings it will automatically switch to 10-bit colour anyway regardless of what colour depth you select in that box.

Well now, that is some useful information at last!  I still say it doesn't hurt to have 10 bits turned on in Nvidia control panel anyway.  That pesky program is always trying to override my settings!

MSFS uses the HDR10 standard,   so 10 bits.    For best results calibrate your monitor with the windows HDR calibration tool from the windows store.

Also pay attention to the dynamic range setting in your gpu control panel,  it should match the setting and capabilities of your display.  It will affect black details and white peaks.  There is "full or limited",    the full setting ranges from 0-255,  and the limited ranges from 16-255.    Nvidia uses the "full or limited" verbage,  but my LG OLED calls the same setting High or Low.   It can make your screen look washed out.

Edit:  with the HDR calibration app,   try their method.   But,  you can also see if someone reliable like Rtings has reviewed your display and use their numbers for brightness levels of your panel.   Rtings shows my LG "Sustained 10% Window 768 cd/m²".    That number is darn close in the calibration app.   Maybe coincidence,  but thought I'd mention it.  Something to try I guess.
