Long hauls in MSFS - Very concerned...

Featured Replies

Can someone tell me what is the logic behind MSFS locking the weather & time menu once you load a saved flight? No other sim does this.. This does not bode well for long hauls in MSFS..

Last few days, I have been getting CTDs so often (different topic altogether), but only saving grace is all those CTDs happened with PMDG 737.. which means I had a perfectly saved flight with ability to restore full panel state including the time on the clock!

But here comes the kick in the gut - found out you still cannot change weather once you load a saved flight.. don't know if live weather will work in saved flights.. doing long hauls is going to be problematic if I cannot load saved flights.. there's bound to be CTDs in 10 hr long flights, but if you lose control over weather menu after loading a saved flight, its gonna be a big problem..

Were you flying with manually set weather or Live Weather?

If it's Live Weather I believe that when you load the saved flight the Live Weather at the present will be the active one always, so, you'll have to adpat the flight for the new conditions.

There is ( yet ) no "historic weather" choice for MFS.

I tried both on 2 different flights.. 1st flight flight had live weather and when the sim crashed and I reloaded, my live weather was stuck at the same condition as departure.. which means if I had early morning winter fog, I'll have same fog when I land in the afternoon as well.. no point in looking at TAF to see how weather may improve thru the day.

2nd flight, I did manually set weather which I could not change after reloading saved flight..

CTDs in long flights aren't necessarily mandatory - I have run many, many 10-14 hour flights with no issue. Perhaps you can try eliminating the CTDs first? Do you overclock, for example? Many things in the community folder?

I haven't had CTDs with MFS.

One of the things that might have helped was reverting "back" to DX11, although I did like DX12, but some of the addons were not compatible, and DX11 appears to be more stable in my system.

Do you by any chance run in DX12 mode?

All this talk about CTD's makes me wonder if i'm running the same sim as everyone else. It runs flawless here (By flawless i mean without a single CTD in more than 6 months and im even running the beta)

Same here.. and on my rig everything is either overclocked or tuned very close to the failure line.

My CTDs only come from faulty addons, FS Realistic is my main culprit.

It just doesn't play well with some planes, other than that the sim runs solid with 300+GB of addons.

The problem with that is that your fuel burn will be off because of changes in wind speed and direction, so you could run out of fuel

For example if you had a tailwind when you saved the flight, but when you load the flight the next day to finish, you now have a headwind...

Some of you are missing the point. CTDs are a different topic and there is one opened already and I wrote in that thread. Until SU10 I rarely got crashes. I do overclock cpu and have tons of addons. But was never a problem until Last few days where I’m getting too many crashes. Maybe MSFS was getting servers ready for the hot fix release today.

My question still is why weather menu is locked while loading saved flight?

there maybe so many reasons to save and load a flight even if there’s no ctd. Real world interruptions etc. I may break a long flight into 2 parts for instance. Sometimes I do the preflight stuff for 30 min and save it for a later time.

I don't know the answer. Just wish to add my voice to the many that are wondering why no weather options if loading a saved flight. Personally, I don't bother to save flights because of this shortcoming.

I so wish MSFS allowed the feature provided by FSUIPC in PP3d and FSX; I could pick up my previous flight in the exact spot I last left it; I could also adjust weather and time if wished. I also wish I didn't have to go back to main menu to change aircraft.

Maybe one day............Never thought I'd live to see the Sim that MSFS is today, always wished for it though.

There IS a way to change the weather in a saved flight by editing the saved file and changing some lines. I am away from my pc now and can’t give details, but I will check and let you know how later today. It is really quite easy. 😊

Thanks. That will be a great workaround if we can do that.

***SEE EDIT BELOW***

I am afraid that due to a well known bugs in MSFS, this will only work if you are able to switch to VR mode. Apparently, whenever you load a saved flight, you cannot see the toolbar anymore, so not only can you not change the weather, but you can't access any other items in the toolbar either.

Now, if you do have VR, the toolbar shows up in VR and shows up as well if/when you go back to 2D. No idea when Microsoft is going to fix this known bug (they know about it apparently)

Anyway, assuming you can access the toolbar, this is what you need to do to be able to change the weather on a saved flight.
When you select the flight you want to load, you can edit the appropriate .FLT file before you click on it. Open it with Notepad.  Here is an example below:

Change the following section as shown below:

[Weather]
UseWeatherFile=False
UseLiveWeather=False
WeatherPresetFile=.\WeatherPresets\FewClouds.WPR          *Delete what comes after =
WeatherCanBeLive=False                                    *Change this to True
CloudmapPosOverride=False                                 Delete everything that comes after
CloudmapInitialPosX=0
CloudmapInitialPosY=0
FixedClouds=False
DebugPublicAirflowDisplay=False

This is what you end up with. Save the file, load the flight and you will be able to change the weather.

[Weather]
UseWeatherFile=False
UseLiveWeather=False
WeatherPresetFile=
WeatherCanBeLive=True

***EDIT***

I have now found a way to display the toolbar without having to switch to VR.

In addition to the changes above, you need to replace the "Resource Path" and "Object file" entries with the following entries:

[ResourcePath]
Path=Missions\Asobo\FreeFlights\FreeFlight\FreeFlight

[ObjectFile]
File=Missions\Asobo\FreeFlights\FreeFlight\FreeFlight

If you do this, you will be able to access the tool bar when loading a saved flight without having to switch to VR first. This works!
