FSL Concorde First Look

Featured Replies

Very impressive but looks also complex. I have the ITV DVD set of the BA Concorde with Captain Rowland and his crew. But it is enough? 😁

Anyway, will not buy it straight away, but maybe later.

I have those DVDs too and yes, together with the tutorial that will be published with the release that is enough to teach you the fundamentals.

I left the VFE to control fuel and other tasks for several years but once you’re familiar with the aircraft managing the fuel is very satisfying.

The LHR-JFK flight is rather long. One of my favourites is Manchester to Lisbon. Always something to do in the 1hr 25m it takes. One hour less than an Airbus! 😁

The moment I saw this thread on the main page I thought to myself “Ray is going to be all over this” I was not disappointed haha.

@Ray Proudfoot as someone who hasn’t touched a Concorde in a sim ever, what’s the learning curve? How would you compare it to FSLabs A320 or PMDG NGX?

How detailed is the tutorial, Ray? Is it a "step by step" process for n00bs like me, or do they assume that the user knows some of the basics?

This...

I am even afraid to face a plane like this.

13600KF - AIO - 32GB DDR4 - RTX4070 - UW1440p GSync - USB DAC - 2TB NVMe - Windows 11 Pro - Gladiator NXT EVO - 1 Gbps Fiber  - MSFS 2024

With Concorde it’s all about pitch control. On Vr (195kts on the LHR-JFK hop) rotate to 13.5° and then use pitch to maintain 250kts. Remember with reheats on the power is immense and you may need to continue pitching up with light fuel loads. Reheats are generally cancelled 1m 20s after takeoff starts.

Once at FL60 the nose/visor will be up and speed can then be increased gradually up to 395kts levelling out at FL280. Once over non-populated areas reheats are engaged and you pitch up to maintain VMo. At that point you can engage MAX CLB on the AFCS (autopilot) and it will be handled for you.

Reheats off at Mach 1.7 (around 8 mins later). Thereafter the climb rate varies according to the air temp. Monitor ISA DEV - minus temps are good, positive less so.

Of course during this time fuel needs pumping rearwards but you can leave that to the FE until you feel confident.

Concorde only has lateral control via the AFCS. Vertical is dependent on air temp. Priority is getting to Mach 2 even if it means descending to achieve it.

Fun eh? 😀

The one for FSX had save points at every major stage from C&D through taxi, before takeoff and prior to the transonic climb. There are shortcuts like aligning the INS to save time. No prior knowledge is assumed. Makes it easy to complete a full flight over an extended period for those time poor.

There will be a MSFS version but no timescale has been given.

I suspect that unless they hire some experienced coders to hopefully write it in native MSFS coding language vs trying to port over the P3D model, we're talking years at least. 😞

As other prominent devs have discovered, the process is not easy. 🤔

A very Merry Christmas to you Ray...and I hope you have a P3d Concorde under your tree soon!

I’ve just finished listening to a commentary by John Hutchinson on a “Round The Bay” Concorde charter flight. He was in the jump seat keeping the passengers informed of what was happening on the flight deck.

This flight departs Heathrow and with a relatively light fuel load takes off and climbs at very high rates. 17.5° pitch up is required to maintain 250kts before reheats are cancelled. Thereafter pitch reduced to around 13°.

It heads west to Bristol and just south of Cardiff it commences the transonic acceleration from FL280 / Mach 0.95 to FL576 at Mach 2.

Just south of Waterford, ROI the aircraft commences a long 15-20° left hand turn at Mach 2 staying north of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  At the end of the turn it’s heading east towards Guernsey, CI and 60nm before reaching it needs to be at FL370, Mach 0.95.

After passing over the CIs it turns left towards the Isle of Wight decelerating and descending as a subsonic aircraft.

At the OCK VOR it is given vectors for a standard downwind and base approach to 27L.

What interested me was the speeds. 250kts on the downwind leg reducing to 210kts on base and 190kts when intercepting the localiser. It was instructed to maintain 190kts until 4DME when the landing speed of 165kts would be commanded.

This is a relatively quick Mach 2 flight taking approx 1h 30m. A nice change to those Atlantic hops to JFK.

Note those descent, approach and landing speeds. Something else for you Boeing / Airbus pilots to consider. 😉👍

Forget everything you’ve learned about Boeing and Airbus. This is closer to a military jet performance. Always happy to help if you take the plunge. 🙂

I think there will be loads of us asking for help! 🙂

Be interesting to read comparisons in the future of this one vs the newest for XP12 when eventually they are both out together.

The Colimata version would need to have a fully functional Flight Engineer’s panel with the ability to move fuel in most of the 13 fuel tanks. Most because pumping to the two wing tip tanks wasn’t possible or desirable inflight. They always had to be empty for landing. Fuel can be moved in/out of the remaining 11 in the 32-bit FSL version and it’s bound to be the same for the 64-bit version.

That would be a significant update and would attract a price increase. Probably still cheaper than the FSL one but we still await a purchase price for the P3D version.

This just in from A. Wilson on the FSL Forum:

”I anticipate we'll enter beta testing next month. This isn't a point where we have our teams test things for the first time - they've been flying builds for over two years now. It will be a code freeze, finish the manuals and prepare the release build.”
