3rd party program to detect sim time for ambient lighting

Featured Replies

I would like my room ambient lighting to follow time of day in the sim.  Does anyone know of a program that will detect this to automate ambient lighting through google home?  Thanks

Sorry I can’t help you but it is a cool idea!

You use Phillips hue bridge/bulbs?  I already have some, I just don't know how to get msfs to send the time for the hue app to follow.

Follow time of day, I misread that one. I assume you sync with MSFS with Hue Sync?

correct

I am not sure If following time of day in sim can be done with Hue sync, it only reacts to what is on the screen. Think you might need a other app...

You would probably need something to be made to extract the time out of the sim (if that is even possible) and then link with your Hue lights. I don't think this is currently possible to do though - There are ways you can sync it up to your actual time in the real world though.

Nevermind. Rereading the thread, I see that you are already doing what I was suggesting.

A SimConnect client can do this. The simulator variables to query would be (E:LOCAL TIME, Seconds) or (E:ZULU TIME, Seconds)

I'm not totally familiar with the Hue devices, but I know that there is an SDK where a "bridge" can be programmed.
Get Started - Philips Hue Developer Program (meethue.com)

IIRC there is an example profile for the StreamDeck that controls Philips Hue devices.

So the task would be to write a C# or C++ program that uses SimConnect to talk to the sim to query the time - and it needs to control that "bridge" on the other end. Another alternative would be to use middleware instead of SimConnect if this can't be done with C# or C++ (there are several options, providing web services to talk with the sim and similar)

Govee has something similar in their app that will turn on/off by specific time settings.  Check them also.  ( Cheaper too )

I think Phillips sells an Ambilight / Hue system that you connect between the computer and the monitor (or TV), and the Hue lights will work as an Ambilight. The lights will then change color and brightness depending on the image on the monitor.

Glad to see this thread, I didn't know this was even possible.

Right now, I just get up and flip off the lights if I want a night environment :)

I few years back I was thinking it would be nice to have a fan that could be on the side so when I leaned out when flying a ww1 aircraft with trackir, I would feel the wind... Then I just removed that tought and considered myself crazy just for having such an idea....

Then a few months ago I saw on youtube a simpit that actually had those fans installed for wind simulation 😄

This thread reminds me of that, the idea sounds crazy, but then, this will probably be something that is commercialized and sold as sim hardware a few years from now and I will be the first buyer

😛

Out of curiosity, is there a reason for the lights to specifically follow sim time? E.g. today 5pm in Helsinki vs. 5pm in Lisbon would have completely different lighting conditions. I also use Philips Hue for lights to create ambient lighting based on sim lighting conditions (basically screen colours), and have been very happy with it!
