Optimizing Settings for quality on Nvidia 4000 with FG

Everything I read says vsync absolutely needs to be enabled for freesync monitors

That refers to vsync set via nvidia control panel and NOT in game. Two different things.
The reason being is because Vsync is only needed when you exceed your monitors refresh rate. And that’s the only time it will kick in, when running freesync or gsync. So the best way to counter that is just to set a frame cap of 3 frames below your refresh rate. And leave vsync enabled in the nvidia control panel BUT NOT IN GAME!

That doesn't make sense.  Freesync replaces vsync with its own variable fps adaptation model synchronised to your monitor.  Can you point us to some documents you have read?

EDIT:  Exactly as Ian has said above. Our posts crossed.

Ok maybe I misunderstood. I’ll have to test some more and who knows, maybe freesync isn’t working and that’s why I get better performance with vsync on. This is one of many sources I learned from.

Exactly. When above. Read my post above. Don’t use in game v-sync!

Vsync should only be relevant if your FPS are exceeding your display refresh (and that doesn’t sound like it’s happening in your case). If you are getting FPS over your display refresh rate, then simply cap FPS in NV control panel a few lower than your max refresh rate. And turn off Vsync. It shouldn’t be active but you shouldn’t need it either.

So I want to point out my experience with the 4090 since I feel like my experience has been different from several others. I just completed a build that’s running a 13900k and a 4090 (Full specs at the bottom). The first thing I did was turn on frame generation, but I left AA at TAA instead of DLSS because of the slight blur. I also turned off g-sync because I found it was causing a strange screen flicker with DX12.

Let me just say, my performance has been outstanding! Flying into ORD today with FSDT payware scenery, PMDG 737, and while using VATSIM I was still getting 122 fps on final approach. Once I touched down my fps never dropped below 90fps. I will admit I’m running 2560x1440 and not 4k, but I’m perfectly fine with that. I am overly impressed with this performance. I’ve also added a picture below of my approach today. All the years of being told 30 fps in p3d was fine, two years of sub-par performance, and finally the right tech along with a new build has made it possible for me to no longer chase frames.

Everyone’s mileage may vary, but I can tell you this is the absolute best experience I’ve ever had in a sim. All of my settings are at ultra. I feel like for once I can finally rest when it comes to the constant tweaking and SU11 is partially to thank for that!

DX11 at the moment seems way smoother,

also, far less system latency 🙂

You can't use Frame Gen then.  I'm seeing much overall smoothness in dx12 /fg vs DX11.  11 does consume less vram and there is not the annoying aerial image see through runway issue.

Wow those are impressive results.  I also fly at 1440p (or VR hehe - the 4k per eye kinda hurts my 4080 a little).  I would probably see about 70-80 in your case there.  Your CPU is stronger than mine too.

A 4000 series card is probably overkill for 1440p… But do you have any settings to share that helped you get to this happy place? What Terrain LOD are you using? You should be able to crank it way up I would think.

And a note for all… I was hoping this thread could share settings and optimizations for achieving max quality at good frame rates at 4K. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. I think it’s well understood you can get great FPS with lower quality, lower resolution or reduced scaling.  The challenge is maxing quality and FPS at 4K. 🙏

That’s your monitor causing that. Is it a full hardware based gsync momitor or just a compatible one? IMO the best experience with frame gen is with g-sync turned on.

Yes i have also this flickering when G-Sync is enabled. My Monitor is Ultimate G-Sync. Its more obvious at Night Flights on SDR. When HDR is enabled is less. I think needs an update from Nvidia

Sorry, that post was a mix of a reply to some other posts and their performance as well as commenting on the generalized performance overall with a 4090. Regarding 2k vs. 4k, if you ask at @Wise87, him and I have gone back and forth with some testing between his 4k and my 2k and over all he was getting about 10-15fps less than me (similar, but not identical setups). For me personally, the 4k monitor will come one day, but after building this rig I needed the wife to recover from my budget overspend haha.

Regarding optimizations and settings... in my Nvidia control panel, the only thing I have on is the max performance setting. Everything else is default. My settings have TLOD & Objects at 200. For me personally, the comparison between 200 and 400 in some of these settings made little to no visual difference and wasn't worth any trade in performance. Shadow maps 2048 and terrain shadows 1024. Reflections at 256. Everything is on ultra.

Other than that, there's no special tweak or hidden gem here that'll help. I've stopped looking for crazy guides to help squeeze and extra single fps. Make sure you're using a 3rd part app to view your fps and now the internal counter so you can actually see what your real fps is. Hopefully this is helpful.

My monitor is also a gsync ultimate monitor (not just compatible) and this is an issue with DX12. Admittedly, it seems to be a problem tied directly to the bloom setting, but I don't turn bloom off because of the changes it does to the aircraft lights if it's off. There are a handful of posts that cover this flickering issue on the official forums. I haven't checked recently to see if this was resolved with any recent updates. Maybe I'll check tomorrow when I get back from work.

HMM, I have a PG279Q and have never seen any flicker, even with DX12, but maybe it only happens with a 4X00 card when using FG. I NEVER use bloom.

The PG279Q is a really good monitor - $800 really hurt...until I started using it.
