Msfs stutter n drop in fps due to NVMe SSD drive issue?

Featured Replies

I've basically confirmed af this point that random fps drops n stutter are caused by my dedicated NVMe for msfs, I use all NVMe, my is and d drive are also this exact same SSD. Generally around 3400 mbps performance

I used the same barebones setup on two different NVMe and on the other no issues

The weird thing is that both drives are identical both on my msi unify x mb

I run on win 11 and cant really figure out what's different. Both report good health n have been trimmed.  I have the ms store version

Anyone ever ran into this?

I haven't.

What model NVMe drive is the problematic one?

I have Steam, MSFS and all add-ons on the same dedicated NVMe drive (Firecuda 530). No issues.

Can't imagine it's the drive itself, but perhaps how you have MSFS installed or something else configured in Windows could come into play.  I have everything all on a single drive and always have since the end of HDD era:  OS/MSFS/Steam (for 3 other titles) and that's about it on a 2Tb NVMe m.2 drive, and I have a clone of it as well same exact 2Tb drive.   I'm curious how did you deduce the drive was the source of random FPS drops/stutter?

I took the bare bones install and copied it to my D drive. I then change the path in the user config file, run off D same situation that exhibits the behavior. D drive is fine, switch back to my V drive issue shows up

Are you running AIG. If so, close that out and try again. Something in AIG recently made my PC a stuttering mess after a short time flying. It needs an update to fix it.

Unfortunately I'm not. My baseline test is pretty bare

I might have spoke too soon, now the same tests on the "good ssd" with the bare bones test, inconclusive, similar stutter suddenly appearing, turn off online features (even though traffic was off), seems to cure it.  Seems to stutter as turn towards the city whereas before it didnt on this same test (over and over), so im at a loss for understanding this one, it just might have been random repeat luck on the so called "good drive".  By city, i take off with KORD FSDT and make an immediate u turn back toward the city of chicago.  No idea how several of these in a row worked just fine and now dont on same drive that was "fine"

I just got a brand new PC with an I9 13900K and an RTX 4090. When I got this PC, I thought that stutters would be a thing of the past. Not so… when I approach many cities, I get long stutters and sometimes a blank screen for a few seconds whether online or Ai  traffic is enabled or not. At other times, the fps drops for unknown reasons and at other times, everything works great.

So, what I am saying is that your Nvme drive is almost certainly not the issue. I wish I could give you more advice on what to do, but I fear this is something that only MS or Asobo can address. I have tried just about everything (and I mean everything) to pinpoint what is causing this, but now I have given up and accepted that occasional stutters and fps drop is something I will have to live with for the foreseeable future unless someone comes up with a miraculous cure. 🙁

I9-13900K, RTX 4090, Reverb G2, Simrig Motion platform

I have seen Adata SSD's overheat and throttle (while Samsung SSD's in same location did not) The NVME might be doing something similar, perhaps better heat sinking. Watching the temp reported via a util like HWINFO etc will help you see if that is what is going on.

Others have reported occasional stutters, often when a city and/or an airport comes into view.  The MS servers have been flaky lately, could it be as simple as intermittent server issues?

Yeah i think i just got "lucky" for the few tests i did on the other drive, nothing more, or maybe online portions werent going at full speed or off, hence no issues.  I think the cities and their photogrametry or what not cause the lag as they load in.  Ill still check temps on the nvme, but i suspect its fine.

Yes FPS responds to varying loads on the CPU in your case since your GPU is fully capable of anything the sim can throw at it.  Rather than focus on "FPS" I find it's more useful to focus on "frame time variance" as a marker for smoothness.  My hardware is significantly less potent than yours and it's exceedingly rare for me to have to deal w/ stutters even upon landing in the most complex airports in the most demanding planes.  Yes, I might see 1-3 brief stutters on a 2h flight, but that's about it.  I think this has in part to do w/ having headroom to cope with transient spikes in demand and the frame lock affords this.  Unfortunately as you know Frame Generation does not solve main thread overload.  Therefore the key is to be certain the main thread is never unduly overtaxed w/ no headroom, even w/ your 13900K, in order to fly into any airport in any plane and not suffer from significant, noticeable degradation in animation--NOT FPS--animation smoothness and freedom from stuttering.

Yeah i think in terms of stutter, most that claim they cured stutter, mean constant every few seconds stutter.  In my case its scenery or ai loading stutter, which i think is perfectly normal at this time.  All fretting for nothing basically, i thought maybe i was missing out that some had None haha
