PMDG June 3 update

Featured Replies

Correct me if I'm wrong (Someone will 🤣) but wasn't the initial 737 release a type of Early Access where the funds from people buying was meant to be used for the EFB, HQ cabin, and other new features? If that's true it might be that the development on these only started once PMDG got the early access funds from their initial 737-700 release, and so most of these haven't been in development as long as we might have imagined.

I just hope all of this new development and waiting translates into less waiting time for future products (777, 747, etc).

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

My EFB is the Ipad laying on my desk beneath the mousepad. It has everything i need. Charts, Performance Calculator, Weather info, Flight Plan etc. Most imortant: it works with every Plane i fly.

Stop whining, go flying.

I love the, "It's not a problem for me, so no one else should have it" mentality. @ThomseN_inc I'd like to vouch that you buy everyone who doesn't have a second screen or an ipad, that you get one for them. That should certainly solve the whining right?

Ah the predictable responses to a PMDG update thread lol... the reasons for the longer development time for the EFB have been given ample times in detail by PMDG:
a) their intention to release on both the PC and XBox platforms, combined with
b) their need to use existing C++ code (a very prudent choice given years of refinement on that codebase rather than writing from scratch), combined with
c) hitting limitations in the WASM framework, a framework they are now forced to use to due to a) and b)
d) also making this tablet ready for future aircraft like the 777 and 747

For those who don't really understand the technical reasons behind the above I guess the MO is to keep dragging on PMDG... for me and some others as stated above, I'd much rather have frequent communication even if mostly repetitive, than silence for months/years. I also don't have any past grievances with PMDG & RSR which a lot of PMDG bashers seem to be driven by 🙂

The biggest takeaway for me is that the development on the 777 is proceeding nicely and hitting milestones, and it will pick up the universal EFB on day one, and in general it'll be a product that will gain from the experiences the dev team have learned in doing the 737.

As for the comment re: Fenix getting the flight model from another company, that was just the systems code they got from Prosim. The flight models of the Fenix and the PMDG are both based on the core MSFS FDE with of course their own tunings/tweaks/etc.. from all what I understand there is no way to run a flight model completely external of MSFS unless everything is being run externally and MSFS is just used for display output where it's told where to place the aircraft in 3D space via SIMVARs or whatever. I'm sure someone like Aamir or Matt Nischan can explain/clarify better or correct me.

That was indeed the technique used by ELITE SImulation Solutions for their MFS-based visuals project for ELITE v9 XTS which I was proud to test almost a couple years ago, and the visuals bridge that allows for Aerowinx PSX B744 to be fully modelled (in terms of physics modelling, including OFC the flight dynamics) externally :

AFAIK Flyinside also uses an external rotary wing flight dynamics model externally to run their Bell 47 and 206 addons.

Probably off-topic for this thread but I've always been curious about this scheme... doesn't this also mean that weather, atmospheric airflow interactions, etc also have to be modelled outside the sim? For an aircraft to interact fully with MSFS's weather/airflow/etc it has to be based on the core FDE I'd think.

Voice of reason, here. ^

PMDG's Communication, whether you like it or not, is a pleasant surprise in a sea of developers who hardly respond even on Discord.

I never said that. I'm just saying that waiting for the actual EFB to be released can't be that hard because you always have alternatives. Even with no Tablet you can just quickly tab out of the sim, check whatever you want to check and tab right back. Isn't that hard eh?

And doing so you'll see that the EFB will be released in no time.

I wasn’t aware PMDG released a performance calculator for their products as a stand alone app, did you?

wait are you suggesting I spend even more money on TOPCAT on a feature the payware product should have already?

It’s not fair to nullfy’s people’s complaints just because it’s not a problem for you.

I couldnt care less about an efb.

All i want is for the big developers like PMDG,Aerosoft,ORBX and Umberto to test stuff properly even if it delays things a week or so, and not release bug filled products like they have been doing for the last 5 to 10 years.

Quite simple really.

How much are tablets nowadays?  Less than 100 bucks?

So much hot air over an EFB that really isn't critical to the enjoyment of the product.
It really is stating to sound like a lot of spoilt children (I want and I want it now!  BWAH!  BWAH! ).

Meanwhile, the excellent PDMG 737 simply rides on!..
